Definition: struggle between opposing forces
Examples:
Frodo must destroy the ring in the fires of Mordor but all the forces of evil also want the ring.
An alcoholic battles his addiction.
Essential Characteristics
can be external or internal
begins with a want or need
requires an opposing force
creates suspense
drives the plot of the story
Non-Examples
An artist describes the beautiful sunset.
An eagle soars in the sky.
A family eats a delicious dinner, enjoying one another’s company.
