MAY 29, 2011 ● 6TH SUNDAY OF EASTER
Frassati’s First
Graduating Class We happily congratulate the
first graduating class of Fras-
sati Catholic Academy.
The graduation will take place on
June 3, 2011 at the Chapel of the
Immaculate Conception on the
Mundelein Seminary campus.
Bishop George Rassas will pre-
side.
This is a significant moment in
our Catholic history in Lake
County. Frassati Catholic Acad-
emy was created through the
efforts of three parishes: Santa
Maria del Popolo, Transfiguration,
and St. Mary of the Annunciation
as the first Catholic Middle
School of the Archdiocese of
Chicago. Dr. Diane Vida is the
academy’s Principal and Fr. Ron
Lewinski serves as Presi-
dent. The graduation ceremony
on June 3rd is a testimony to the
growing value of and desire for
Catholic Education and the vision
and hard work of many.
We congratulate our graduates.

THE RIGHT CONNECTION
In the days when most people could not read or write,
storytellers kept the community connected with tales that
were entertaining, thought provoking, and informative.
Nowadays public storytelling is almost a forgotten art.
Instead, we are snowed under with information, news,
and commentary by everybody about everything around
the clock. Against this background, many of us must
“multitask” in an attempt to be more productive and effi-
cient. We try to get as many things done at one time as we
possibly can in order to make a little free time for our-
selves. Every parent knows how to multitask! But with
the rise of the Internet, blogs, texting, and Twittering,
something new is emerging, which has been called
“continuous partial attention”: paying partial attention—
continuously—scanning for the best opportunities, activi-
ties, and contacts at any given moment. In general, multi-
tasking allows us to stay in face-to-face connection with
people, but continuous partial attention can isolate us in
our own little bubble, simply watching a screen, often
with negative consequences. The average American
watches more than four hours of TV each day. In a sixty-five-year life, that person will have spent nine years glued to
the tube and seen two million commercials, with over 53 percent of viewing time focused on crime, disaster, and war.
We know that Internet use is growing rapidly, and recent studies show that texting while driving makes people eight
times more likely to suffer a serious car accident. Saint Peter, in today’s second reading, says, “Sanctify Christ as Lord in
your hearts” (Peter 3:15). This is a clear indication of what should be the single most important thing in our lives, from
which everything else flows—how we prioritize our daily life, how we spend our time, our relationships with other peo-
ple, how we use our abilities, and how we use our resources. Make the connection to a Christ-centered life and live!

Dear Fr. Lewinski, Staff
and Parishioners of St. Mary
of the Annunciation Parish:
On behalf of the people served by
Taller de Jose, I would like to
thank you for your generous dona-
tion of $1,207.00 to assist us in the
Ministry of Accompaniment. By
sharing your Holy Thursday col-
lection, you follow Jesus’ invita-
tion to care for the vulnerable.
Because of your help, the staff of Taller de José
have been able to help José Luis, who was homeless,
be reunited with his family. Doris, a survivor of Do-
mestic violence, has been connected with the Give
Back a Smile program and received free dental care.
Marta has been supported in her search for legal assis-
tance. These are only a few of the ways we have ac-
companied clients. Thanks for accompanying us in the
ministry of accompaniment.
May the Risen Christ grace you with new life
this Easter season.
With gratitude,

SVDP Marks Successful 2011 Easter Food Drive
THANKS to the ST. MARY OF THE ANNUNCIATION COMMUNITY and the KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
Phone: 224-522-8863 St. Vincent de Paul
Here is a big THANK YOU for all who participated in the Easter
food drive that occurred In April. St Vincent de Paul (SVDP) used
the food, supplies and monies collected to provide food baskets for
14 area families in need and passed on items to our sharing parish,
Holy Family for their food pantry. Bless you for spreading the Easter
spirit. Our thanks are also extended to the Knights of Columbus for
their continued support by supplying nine of the baskets for SVDP
clients.
If you know of someone in need of assistance, please give them our
phone number and ask them to leave a message. A SVDP repre-
sentative will return the call within a day. Client service activities are
always strictly confidential.
After-School Programs Enrich Life at St. Mary School St. Mary School students recently performed a Spring Concert of
contemporary, uplifting Christian music. Students raised their voices
to the tunes of Michael W. Smith, Chris Tomlin, Travis Cottrell and
other popular contemporary Christian artists. The lyrics of the concert
inspire the students in their daily lives to “Shout to the Lord”, sing
“Hosanna”, “Come, Now is the Time to Worship” and “Go Make a Dif-
ference”.
The concert included dance by Morgan Smola and Caitlin Teehan,
sign language interpretation by fifth grader Bailey Nitch, and soloist
singers: Anna Burkhalter, Natalie Williams, Caitlin Casper, Dominic
Cappuccilli, Olivia Coutre, Riley Harmon and Isabella Anichini. Tal-
ented student musicians accompanied the soloists and student choir:
Bailey Nitch and Dominic Cappuccilli on piano, Danielle Cushing and
Kennedy Gawin on drums, and Patrick McInerney on electric guitar.
St. Mary School guitar club, led by music teacher Mr. Jose Velez-
Florez, and its ensemble of young guitarists, also performed during the
concert. During weekly guitar club meetings throughout the year, be-
ginning guitarists learned the basics of strumming and accompanying.
Guitarists were Marc Corpuz, Brendan Collins and Aidan Devlin.
In addition, the school’s beginning and intermediate bands per-
formed “Let’s Go Band” conducted by Band Director Mr. Rob Slater.
Mr. Slater presented medals to band students who competed in a solo
festival held in early March at Santa Maria del Poppolo. Band stu-
dents recognized with medals for their outstanding achievements
were: Ryan Bobber, Kyle Falkstrom, Ben Roberts, Mary Margaret
Galuska, Jack Teehan and Danielle Cushing.
When St. Mary students are not raising their voices in song, many are
also stretching their minds in an after school Chess Club. All stu-
dents, kindergarten through fifth grade were eligible to participate and
were grouped by age for instruction and games. At the end of each
session, a chess tournament was held. The spring chess club cham-
pions of the 3rd-5th grade bracket were: 1st place, Dominic Cappuc-
cilli , 2nd place, Danny Fiske; and 3rd Place, Kennedy Gawin. Win-
ners of the K-2nd grade bracket were: 1st place, Timmy McInerney;
2nd Place, Darren Gorman; 3rd Place, Tina Joe.
Another note-worthy after school activity is a service project for
PADS. A group of students and their parents volunteer to set up the
mats and make the beds for the homeless guests who sleep in the
basement of the little church on Wednesday nights from October
through April. The weekly activity provides children a hand-on service
opportunity to help the homeless. Even the youngest children can
work together to carry the bedding, count the needed linens and en-
sure that every mat has a blanket and pillow. Through this volunteer
effort, the children learn to care for the homeless and gain an appre-
ciation for the warm shelter of their own homes.

Every Day Evangelizing • Say “I will pry for you” to a friend who has shared some per-
sonal concern or difficulty.
• Respond, “Thank God” when someone shares a success story with you.
• Make the sign of the cross as you pray before a meal in a restaurant.
• Invite someone who has been away from the Church for a while to attend Mass with you.
• Offer to help your neighbor even when it’s not convenient.
• Take time for those who are suffering or in need. Remember, people are more important than tasks.
• When you see God working in your life, point it out to others. We are all enriched by the personal witness of others.

A Pig-ture Is Worth a Thousand Words
For the past several weeks, you’ve probably noted that preparation for
our St Mary Pork and Corn Roast is well under way. And so it is! We
hope you’ve enjoyed the cute pig icons and limericks! And we hope
you’ve put August 6 on your family calendar!
The picture above attests to the many people needed to plan
for, create, develop, assemble and execute the steps toward making
this event such a spectacular summer celebration!
And the good news is: there’s plenty of room for more folks
in our picture! You will fit in very nicely! Won’t you please think about
getting involved today. We really need your help! And there are so
many benefits to getting involved as a volunteer. First, just the great
feeling you will get from making the decision to jump in. Second, it’s
one of the fastest ways to make friends in the parish—just look at all
the smiling faces in our pig-ture! The experience of working together in
community has its roots in our own faith! Third, your involvement will
help to ensure we have the necessary hands to realize the St Mary
Pork and Corn Roast mission----delivering significant income to our
parish in a spirit of faith, food and fun. Finally, you will have fun! We
guarantee it!
Please call today to volunteer! Call Sue at 847-223-0010!

SPRED Parishes Working Together
to Welcome & Include Persons with Special Needs
SPRED is a collaborative effort among the parishes in a local area.
We all share a common vision – to welcome children, teens, and
adults with special needs into the worshipping and sacramental life of
our parish communities. To assure that these experiences are mean-
ingful and enriching to the faith of our friends with developmental dis-
abilities, SPRED offers catechesis specifically tailored to their needs.
Through shared friendship and reflection on life rooted in scripture and
prayer, these small communities grow together in faith as they deepen
their awareness of God and their personal relationship with Jesus.
Where friends gather together in love – the presence of Jesus is dis-
covered, welcomed and embraced.
This opportunity is available at St. Joseph Parish to teens that are age
11-16 years old. Persons outside of this age range are welcomed in
SPRED groups within neighboring parishes. There is no need for past
experience with persons with disabilities or any special background or
education. All training is provided by the SPRED agency for the com-
fort of our volunteers and to insure the quality of our program. Please
– consider contacting us for a simple conversation to learn more about
this very rewarding ministry. Parents of children with disabilities of
any age are especially encouraged to learn more about volunteer-
ing for SPRED. Parents please be sure that your son or daughter’s
name is on the waiting list for a SPRED community. We do not want to
leave anyone out.
For more information, please call: St. Joseph Rectory at 847-546-3610, SPRED Parish Chairperson, Karen Kasprzycki at 847- 543-1718 or St. Joseph Director of Religious Education, Dianne Raihle at 847-546-3554.

Our Lives Change When Our Habits Change by Matthew Kelly
Matthew Kelly has inspired millions with the message that there is genius in Catholicism, but if the Church is to avoid falling into obscu-rity, individual Catholics must demonstrate its relevance through a dedication to becoming the best-version-of-themselves. Matthew gives practical guidance in two dynamic talks on ways that we can change our habits to change our lives... and awaken the sleeping giant that is the Church. One of several wonderful CDs offered by this en-gaging and gifted speaker. Please remember a $3 donation per CD is suggested to allow the
parish to continue the program and offer new material.
