24-26 Feb, Border War XIX
[ Bordescros ] Kurrajong Scout Camp, Oura Rd,
Wagga Wagga NSW 22650
The year is 1326. The scene, a
Tuscan plain, outside Firenze
(Florence). Conte di Averardo
de’Medici is hosting a
celebration in honour of his fellow
silk merchant and historian, Dino
Compagni. The celebration
includes many of the new
technologies brought back from
the empires to the east by the
Polo brothers, Niccolo and
Maffeo. There is a market on the
green, surrounded by gay
pavilions and fluttering banners;
kites fly in the sky under the
Tuscan sun; children do battle
with water bombs; gentle folk
play bocce or shoot at the butts;
while dashing blades flash sparks
on the rapier field. Meanwhile
Knights, with their Squires and
War Bands fight exciting battle
scenarios for Glory and Honour.
Gentle folk partake of classes in
the Arts and Sciences, while
others vie for War Points in the
A&S competitions of brewing,
calligraphy & illumination, and
silken items. At night as the stars
appear, voices are raised in
song, poetry and theatre at the
annual ‘Mouth from the South’
Bardic Competition. Yes, ‘tis
Border War with all the usual
activities. New this year is a larger
Village Green, a period camping
area as well as the usual camp
sites, ‘Mongolian’ archery, and a
kite flying competition, for all
ages. Of course there are the
two air-conditioned halls and the
dorms, and room for caravans.

Baronial Senate Meeting ~ All Welcome!
Friendly reminder that the Baronial Senate meetings are open to all members of the populous,
but we do require three officers to make quorum. If you have anything that you would like
added to the agenda, please let me know. There is also time set aside for general business if
there is something that you wish discussed that is not on the agenda.
Also, if you cannot attend, but wish to have something raised, please email me at
[email protected] and I will raise it on your behalf. Alternately, there is the option to
skype rowany.seneschal to attend remotely. Everyone is welcome to attend!

A Word from the Baronial Archery Marshal A small but stalwart band of archers contested the inaugural round of the Baronial Archery
Championship. The contest was a modified Queens Round, which I'm calling the Rowany
Round. We had the pick of the day with perfect conditions for archery, which started with
practice followed by coaching on the mysteries of 'string walking' and 'string picture'. Results of
the competition were as follows:
The next round will be on a date to be advised in the second half of January. Just like today's
competition, the format will be beginner friendly and structured to encourage participation.
We had plenty of loaner equipment and enough arrows to equip a small Hun Horde, so please
consider turning up next time, having fun while getting better and picking up some lazy points
in the Archery Championship.

A Word from the Arts & Sciences Officer
Greetings!
I was so proud of our singers at Yule, carolling fit for a Prince – of Caid, in fact! Well done all
who contributed to the event, it was a glorious success, brought in to being by the talent and
hard work of the stewarding team, House Gourmandy, and improved by everyone who made
an effort, however large or small, at pre-17th century garb, thus helping to bring The Dream to
life. Big congratulations to Lady Ilona Skaldja on being appointed the new Bard of Rowany
and, if I may be so bold, my compliments to their Excellencies Miles and Ameline for continuing
this tradition. We also had fantastic live music thanks to Jeneur, Anika, Pia and Ilona, which we
put to good use with lots of dancing. Many thanks to the wayfaring dance teachers, Aeron
from St Florian (but once a Rowanite, always a Rowanite), and Anthony and Elysa from
Okewaite. Anthony and Elysa are running a monthly dance practice in Mittagong. The next
one will be on the afternoon of 21 January 2017. If you are interested, contact Anthony on
I would love to see and join in more dancing in Rowany. Dancing can bring us all together, as I
saw at Yule when it seemed at least half the feast joined in the traditional Ursulan Bear Dance.
Dancing helps us meet people, putting the S in SCA, and everyone who stands up for a dance
improves the atmosphere of an event. The knowledge and talent is here in Rowany, but we
need to pull the threads of the network to support regular practice back together and share
this Art among the populace so we can have 56 people doing not just the Bear Dance but,
verily, the Newcastle! How do you think we can do this? What can you do to help?

RowanyReeve–Arabella d'Aubigny Xero reports tabled at meeting ? YES / NO Bank balance $95,290.25 at 19/12/16 Expenditure since last meeting tabled at this meeting. Ratified by two officers: 1. _____________________________________ 2. _____________________________________ Dence Park management has changed post Council merger. It is now being managed by a third party that requires a $10 membership to rent the rooms for half price. Will need to find contract we would sign and provide to Board of Directors for their approval (Unnr to complete). Signatures for Rowany account – electronic format is up to date, but hardcopy signatures are seriously out of date. There are two options here – 1) we can change them over to the BoD as other baronies have and update with new board OR 2) keep the signatures in house and update them when needed. Motion by Arabella: Hardcopy signatures for Rowany account to be changed to the Board of Directors. Seconded by Elena. 1 abstained, rest in favour. Motion passed. Rowany GST has not been paid to SCA Ltd for all of 2014 & 2015 ($4483.80). We owe approximately an additional $3000 for 2016. Motion by Unnr: Pay the outstanding GST for 20014 & 2015 ($4483.80) to SCA Ltd with payments for later dates to be negotiated after festival. Seconded by Arabella. All in favour. Motion passed. Book keepers have not been coding transactions on Rowany account correctly, rather they are coding everything as a Festival transaction. We are currently paying $1,100 pa for this service provided at the Kingdom level. It is suggested that we have 2 accounts – one for the Barony of Rowany and the other for Festival. This is in line with other Baronies with major events (Southron Gaard, Kraė Glas, Innilgard). If this happens, Arabella will code the previous transactions and going forward in the Rowany account. She may need some help with this data entry. The book keepers fee is currently being withheld. Motion by Unnr: We create another account for Festival funds if approved by the Festival Executive. Seconded by Reagan. All in favour. Motion passed. Kingdom event levies have not been transferred for 2016 Festival (the $1500 was coded but not transferred). Motion by Arabella: To transfer $1500 of Kingdom event levies to the Kingdom for 2016 Festival. Seconded by Annabel. All in favour. Motion passed. Baron and Baroness–Ameline and Miles de Colewell Apologies Arts and Sciences–Annabel de Swinburne Meetings finifhsed for 2016. Dence Park was cancelled for December – we may need to broadcast cancellations better. Approximately 5 people on Monday noghts with Therese at Addison Road. Hoping to format some classes for next years Monday nights. Berries pouches added to Baronial A&S spreadsheet. Marshalls Heavy Marshall – Jean-Christophe le Saussier Apologies – written report below. “”Fighter practice numbers are a little below average, mainly weather related. Plans for new year to boost
them a touch.
At Yule and the following Rowany practice, I checked rattan widths as per Earl Marshal directive. Only one sword under specifications. Also at Yule, an armoured passage of arms occurred. No injuries or incidents to report. One person had their helmet padding checked after a solid hit - they were advised to not use their helmet until it had been repadded. My thanks to Regan for being Marshal in Charge of the event, I will be sending her a written report from an armoured combat perspective shortly. 2 new authorisations were conducted last week. Congratulations to Minerva and Ty, both from the College of St Ursula. Request: At current, I am collecting authorisation forms for new authorisations, renewals and upgrades and posting them in batches. The reason for this is to allow me to keep a better track of authorisations (as required in my quarterly reports to Kingdom) and to ensure that people get their cards (send them in a batch with a return envelope, I distribute at fighter practice/event). I am asking for permission to purchase a number of pre-paid envelopes in order to facilitate this - price TBD (AusPost sells prepaid envelopes @ $1.20ea)”” Noted by Raegan that report of no injuries was not correct – there was one injury at Yule. Motion by Unnr: $25 made available to Marshall to buy prepaid envelopes for authorisation forms. Seconded by Annabel. All in favour. Motion passed. Rapier Marshall – Regan of Lunihawke No rapier incidents. People continuing to train. Captain of Archers – William de la Montaigne Coupe Apologies. Read Facebook post. “”A small but stalwart band of archers contested the inaugural round of the Baronial Archery Championship. Constable –Elena de Moravia Numbers are currently down, no lost property. Collegians are saying they were told that they don’t have to pay for the $5 non member fee for fighter practice.
