Board of Education Visioning Sessions: Open to the Public
The Board of Education’s meetings this fall concern all the ongoing issues of school operation, but they are also visioning sessions: opportunities to develop a strategic plan for the next five years and to find innovative ways to address the issue of declining enrollment. These meetings are open to the public.
Recently discussed items include: a possible increase in magnet recruiting and enrollment; the im-plementation of enhanced communications measures by the school; a proposed plan to utilize the old bowling alley building as a music facility; early college credit courses through UConn Avery Point; a revised program of study and possible restructuring of faculty and classes; and the develop-ment of an outdoor education facility on the school’s Silver Eel cove property.
If you would like to listen in on these exciting and forward-thinking conversations, all are welcome to
attend. The next BOE meeting is November 30, 2011 at 6:00 p.m.
Walsh Park Update
At the I.C.B. Meeting on November 8th, Frank Burr and Art
Walsh reported on recent activities of Walsh Park Benevo-
lent Corp.
Starting in June, Frank and Art conducted a detailed in-
spection and review of all 13 rental properties in order to
define what work, if any, was needed to keep the units in
top condition. There are no serious or major issues, but a
number of smaller problems that will be undertaken as
time and funds permit.
As in the past, Z and S will take the lead in the work to be
done. Tom Shillo has been very supportive of WPBC hous-
ing efforts over the years and continues to be very helpful
in keeping the scope and cost of work in reasonable limits.
Di Shillo, WPBC’s chief financial officer, reported that re-
sults for the year 2010 were solid and the upcoming work
was quite manageable.
Frank Burr also stated that WPBC will, to the extant it can,
be supportive of renewed interest in the possible develop-
ment of school-owned property for additional housing units.
FI School Judo Club
Students of the Fishers Island Judo club have just com-
pleted their first competition, and it was a huge suc-
cess! Each Thursday, the children meet at the school
gym for classes with Sensei Egnor from Montville.
They not only have to work on their throws and
sweeps, but these eager learners also are required to
learn a host of Japanese vocabulary in order to pro-
gress through the ranks of belts. At this time, students
range from beginning white belts to more advanced
green belts.
On October 28th, the yellow and orange belts met at the
Montville town hall to compete against approximately
60 other yellow and orange belt students. And our kids
did a fabu-
lous job!
Everyone
earned a
trophy and
we can’t wait
to go to the
next compe-
tition!!!

Awful Wreck of the Magnificent Steamer ATLANTIC on Fishers Island
Lithograph by N. Currier, 1846
Courtesy of George F. Bass
On the evening of November 25, 1846, the steamer Atlantic suffered a disabling boiler accident several miles beyond the mouth of New London harbor while bound for New York. This would have been of little import ex-cept for the fact that at the time of the acci-dent a furious gale was sweeping Long Island Sound. Several vessels tried and failed in their attempts to reach the stricken vessel. Crippled and without means of propulsion she was at the mercy of the elements with only her anchors keeping her from being swept ashore. For the next two days the wind and waves pushed her closer and closer to Fish-ers Island as her anchors alternately held and dragged. Throughout Thanksgiving Day, No-
vember 26, 1846, she came perilously close to being dashed on the rocks, but her anchor cables held all day and throughout the night. Finally at 4:30 a.m. on Friday, November 27th, the last anchor cables snapped and she crashed onto the rocks on the northeast side of North Hill, not far from today’s Lincoln and Molly Frank residence. More than 40 of the approximately 90 passengers and crew on board perished. The clerk never recorded all the passengers making an exact count impossible.
This tragic accident was the worst in Long Island Sound’s waters up to that time, with the exception of the burning of the Lexington in 1840. The wreck spurred the construction of neighboring North Dumpling Light, completed in 1849.

Now that the clocks are back on standard time and the days are shorter, it is really beginning to feel like fall. With the last flowerbed
cleaned up and the spring bulbs all planted, gardening projects can now be done indoors and holiday decorating can be a nice way to
start.
If you have a bunch or two of newly dried hydrangeas, you can make a hydrangea topiary for the holidays as a first project.
1. Find a sturdy stick about 2 inches in diameter and 1foot and ½ inch high for the trunk.
2. Take a plastic pot (ceramic will crack) and fill the pot with „Plaster of Paris”, which can be found at a craft store. As
the plaster starts to set, place the stick in the middle of the pot and wait about 12 hours to have the plaster dry and
the stick is secure.
3. Once the stick is secure in the pot, shave off a bit of wood at the top, so it is slightly pointed and place a 4 to 5-inch
square of oasis on the top of the stick. You can wire the oasis on if you like, but it is not necessary. Then stick the dried
hydrangea flowers into the oasis forming a nice round ball.
4. Place the whole topiary into a larger container and cover the top with moss. You can also add a bow to the trunk to
make it look more festive. The topiary should last through out the holidays.

Chill in the air, not of summer. Whitecaps on the channel’s darkening waters. The ferry lists from side to side as we cross in our scarves and fall jackets. Bobbing for apples at the Fall Festival The seventh graders in Mrs. Sawyer’s English class proudly sport their book report t-shirts.
On Friday, October 21st, the student council hosted a Fall Festival for the island commu-nity. Activities included a cake walk, bobbing for apples, a haunted trail, and a delicious pasta dinner cour-tesy of Sue Lusker. Every class, grades 7 through 12, contributed to the festivities, and the event garnered over $500 for the student council. Many thanks to all who attended!
The week of October 31st, grades 7 through 12 took their annual school trip. Students traveled to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where they took a candlelight ghost tour on Halloween and visited the battlefield and Civil War Museum. They then traveled to eastern Pennsylvania, where they visited the Eastern State Penitentiary and took a tour of historic Philadelphia. The final stop: New York City, where students visited Ellis Island, caught a showing of Wicked at the Gershwin Theatre, and marveled at the Metropolitan Mu-seum of Art before heading home.

New features at the Doctor’s Office
In October and November, the Office staff will be busy converting all of our patient‟s charts over to electronic medical
records (EMR), bringing Fishers Island truly into the 21st Century! In order to realize the benefits of a new paperless world, the
Office will no longer take patients on a walk-in basis. Beginning October 1st, anyone who wants to see the doctor will have to
call ahead to make an appointment. This will allow us to get all of the patient‟s paperwork and insurance information regis-
tered before they actually see the doctor. We also hope that it will significantly reduce the amount of waiting time that many
patients are currently experiencing, particularly in the summer months.
The Office phones will be manned to take appointments every weekday morning from 9.00 to 12.00 and anyone with
an urgent care need will be seen by the doctor on the same day. Although the Office will be closed for appointments on
Wednesdays (Dr Ingram will be working at L&M, or Pequot.) As in the past, Dr Ingram will continue to be “on-call” outside of
office hours for patients with emergencies that are not serious enough to require calling the ambulance. Fall/winter hours

Joanne’s Gold N Silver Shop
Memory Book
Please send me your stories of shopping with my son, young helpers and me and also young and older
people who helped me get the shop clean, freight delivered & up and running. I believe I am up to a 4th
generation of shoppers. I have so many happy memories and laughs after being in business going on 33
years, and I believe you all do also.
I’ll share a few for now. A young boy came in the shop and place on the glass jewelry case a white athletic
sock full of coins - I thought the glass would break – Not So. He had been saving his coins all winter in his
sock so that he could go shopping on Fishers Island in the Gold N Silver Shop. Another young customer
walks out with unpaid merchandise unknown to Mom and me; well mom was rushing for the ferry & came in
for a quick purchase- they left of course rushing for the ferry. I received a letter in the mail. Her daughter
had stolen a .50 bracelet and Mom paid me in stamps. Debt paid in full. For now 1 more story. Are you a
collector? I have a buyer who over the years saved every rope bracelet she ever bought from my shop,
when her parents were moving other things got thrown out, but not her collection. The joys of summer on
Fishers Island and the memories.
PS. I have pictures of 2 young boys who came in to my shop regularly, I had masks made of real feathers
and they each bought one. I took pictures of them in front of the Gold N Silver shop on their bikes. They
are still here on Fishers, they work here. Will you recognize them?

keepers at Race Rock Lighthouse off the shore of New London, Connecticut. "Legacy" is a story of how the past influences the present, of fathers and sons, failure, guilt, love, and redemption. The story begins in 1907 and continues in
1938, when the hurricane of the century bears down on this man-made island in the middle of the sea. Those trapped at Race Rock - the keeper, his fiancée, and a mysterious stranger - must fight the forces of nature and the demons
within that threaten to destroy them. "Legacy of the Light" draws readers into a fast paced story full of twists and turns.
