Progress andTrends

As an industry leader, 3M drives technologies that enable lower cost building solutions. For instance, 3M intumescent technology enabled the use of plastic pipes that were originally banned in commercial buildings due to their combustible nature – providing a cheaper, easy-to-install solution for electrical conduits and plumbing lines.

3MTM gains reputation for leadership and earns the industry's trust:19803MTM Fire Barriers FS-195Wrap/Strip Introduced.

19813MTM helps write the first specifictest standard for through penetrationfirestop systems (ASTM E 814).

19823MTM Fire Barrier CP25 Caulk,3MTM Fire Barrier Putty 303 and3MTM Interam Mat indroduced.

19903M developes an insustry milestone withreformulated, water-based 3MTM Fire BarrierCP25WB Caulk - easier to clean and less environmentallyinpactful than most solvent based caulks.

19943MTM introduces fire protection wraps for grease, air, fume and plenum ducts. This established 3MTM as a full service fire protection providerfor through penetrations, construction joints and nowprotective insulative wraps.

19973MTM Introduces Firedam spray for construction joints to meet ASTM 1399 test criteria.

20033MTM launches first firestop sealants to meetnew UL Water Leakage test, W Rating-Class 1requirements.

20043MTM named #1brand prefferedby installersof firestop products.

20063MTM develops e-Train,a comprehensiveon-line firestopprogram that hasbecome the industry benchmark for training.

In 1974, the movie Towering Inferno sparked the imagination of Richard Licht, a 3M product developer who passionately believed 3M technologies could be used to improve the safety of multi-story buildings. Several devastating fires – including the 1980 MGM Grand Hotel fire that killed 84 people and injured 679, inspired Licht to develop the first firestop products based on existing 3M intumescent technology.Recognized by many as “The Father of Fire stopping,” Licht also helped develop some of the first firestop requirements in commercial building codes. He worked tirelessly to make the codes more demanding to improve the safety of buildings.

Passive fire protection functions to contain fires at the source, preventing loss of life by preventing the products of combustion (smoke, hot gases and flames) from spreading throughout a building.

Passive fire protection is a proven method of protecting structures against fire, and of providing protection to services within concealed spaces by reducing/minimizing/delaying the spread of a fully grown fire to different compartments to prevent/reduce loss in terms of life and property. A vital factor in reducing this risk is to provide physical barriers to the spread of fire within the building by dividing it in to a series of compartments.

The protection of the structural flame, the enclosure and protection of vertical and horizontal openings, effective firestopping at junctions, protection of service penetrations, and use of low flame spread finishing materials and non-combustible materials are all economically viable, effective & important considerations.

Having passive protection in place helps assure building occupants that there will be time to exit before gases, fire and smoke spread throughout the building. If active systems fail, as they often do, then there is still a passive system in place for life safety.

It can be achieved by use of an effective Firestopping system. Firestopping is an integral part of fire protection engineering. Firestop systems protect against the passage of flames, deadly gases and toxic smoke through openings that are created for penetrations, joints and gaps in fire. Resistive walls, floors and floor/ceiling assembly. The integrity of fire-rated assemblies is restored by firestop systems.

3MTM is proud to be the industry leader in firestopping.

Our dedication to stringent testing and code developments help make buildings safer today than they were even 10 years ago. And when that dedication is backed by the 3MTM brand, you get what you would expect – proven reliability and outstanding service.

The construction industry is increasingly moving towards easy-to-use firestop solutions. That’s why 3MTM, in its leadership role, provides cutting-edge and fully integrated systems. These systems are designed to help you efficiently build safer buildings that protect lives and property.

The majority of 3MTM’s firestopping innovations are tested on-site in the company’s own UL and Intertek certified fire-test center. By testing these systems in actual job-specific conditions, we help you with high-quality, effective firestopping solutions.

Building designs and uses continue to evolve, and so too must 3MTM firestop technology. For example, in buildings where telecommunication cables are constantly being upgraded, the 3M™ Fire Barrier Pass-Through Device allows for re-enter ability and helps keep cables organized and protected.

Passive FireProtection Systems

From time-tested fire barrier sealants to today’s innovative firestop devices and duct wraps, 3MTM scientists work to develop solutions to firestop virtually anything on a building site. With over 100 products and over 1000 tested approved systems, 3MTM has the most complete program for all your firestopping needs.

Fires are a major hazard to human life and cause costly damage to infrastructure. With major information/data, huge investments and above all life at risk, the IT-ITES and Telecom sector stands at a higher risk than any normal office complex. The losses in terms of life, resources, business downtime are huge. The limited escape facilities and the difficulties encountered by intervention forces in gaining access, call for extensive safety arrangements which must be complementary and mutually coordinated.

3M™ Fire Barrier CS-195+ Composite Sheet

3M™ Fire Barrier CS-195+ Composite Sheet is a one-part composite system comprised of four components. The heart of the system is an organic/ inorganic, fire-resistive elastomeric sheet. 3M™ Fire Barrier CS-195+ Composite Sheet is designed to seal larger penetrations through fire-rated walls and floors. The nominal 0.3 inch (7.62 mm) thick composite sheet provides up to a 4-hour fire rating. When exposed to temperatures in excess of 250°F (121°C), the fire-resistive sheet begins to volumetrically expand and swells 8-10 times its original size, forming a high strength, hard char that retards heat transmission. This expansion process is called “intumescence”.

From 2 hours to 4 hours depending on the system and application for walls and floors penetration.

• Intumescences (expands with heat) to form a hard char that tightly seals penetrations against flame spread, smoke and toxic fumes.

• Multiple applications: It can be used for through penetration firestop, heat shield and firebreak protection. • Easy to install using common trade tools, No mixing or damming required• Lightweight: It is easy to handle, cut and form to desired shape.• Easy to fasten: Bolt punch or drill through. Use self-tapping screws or anchor bolts.• Thermally conductive: Allows unwanted heat build-up to escape.• UL Classi ed: Tried and tested. Peace of mind for the customer.• Cost e ective: High performance versus installed cost. • Versatile and Re- enterable: Can be cut to fit irregular shapes.

Installation1. Preparatory Work: The surface of the opening and any

penetrating items should be cleaned to allow for the proper adhesion of the 3M™ Fire Barrier Mortar. Ensure that

the surfaces are free of frost.2. Mixing Instructions: Mix ratio can be varied from 1 part water

to 2 parts powder for self-leveling and 1 part water to 3 parts powder for trowelable mortar. Mix the mortar until it is

homogeneous and smooth, for a total of not less than 5 minutes. Watch for dry spots at the bottom edges of the pail.

3. Installation Details: Install the applicable depth of damming material as detailed within the listed system. For a fire resistance period of up to 180 minutes 63.5mm Mortar to be installed. Install the applicable depth of 3M™ Fire Barrier Mortar into

the opening flush with the surface of the substrate, or as detailed within the applicable listed system, at the depth for the assembly and rating that is required. Concrete screws, spaced at maximum 305 mm OC, to be partially embedded into the vertical sides of opening all-around to key the mortar to the opening periphery. A Nominal 6 mm to 10 mm high crown bead of mortar to be applied at the top surface of the floor or both surfaces of wall to cover the edges. Tool within 20 minutes. Immediately clean all tools after use with water.

4. Limitations: 3M™ Fire Barrier Mortar cannot be installed in below freezing temperatures. Do not apply 3M™ Fire Barrier Mortar when surrounding temperature is less than 40°F (4°C) and in conditions where seals may be exposed to rain or water spray within 18 hours of application. Do not apply 3M™ Fire Barrier Mortar on frost-coated surfaces or to areas that are continuously immersed in water.

* CAUTION: This product will conduct electricity when wet. DO NOT install in contact with live exposed conductors of electricity such as bus bars or on old (cloth-like) cable jacketing. Consult an electrician or electrical engineer. Avoid bonding 3M™ Fire Barrier Mortar to moving pipes. Wrap such pipes with a bond breaker tape. This mortar is not intended to be load bearing. For penetrations subject to foot traffic, consult a structural engineer for support requirements.

* The above installation details is a typical one which changes as per site and as per the system passing. Always follow UL specification details for installation. The above details will just provide the overview of the installation.

* The coverage does NOT take into account the percentage of the hole filled with services without any wastage. The applicator should be responsible for the quantity measurement.
