Social Media and Depression
In the last decade, there have been significant changes in the way people interact
There are studies that prove that the prolonged use of Social Networking
Sites are related to symptoms of depression
Facebook has over 1,000,000,000 active users today
Facebook is used for business and personal use, and has increased
connectivity globally
Since the invention of social media, the amount of time kids and teenagers spend
in front of a screen has significantly
increased
Although social networks allow for many connections, they are usually shallow and cannot replace face-to-
face communication
This has caused a complete lack of
interpersonal skills from millennials
The lack of face-to-face communication forces people to become isolated

This is because self-presentation
is the principal user activity
There are other causes of depression due to social media, such as cyber bullying, lack of
'real-life' connections, and anxiety
Kids and teenagers are constantly comparing
themselves to social media icons and celebrities
The truth is, social media makes it easy to glamorize people's every day lives
Which is what many celebrities and social media icons do
Without social media, we wouldn't be constantly connected to the outside world
Thanks to social media, people are constantly exposed to activities and events occurring
This causes a feeling of exclusion, which
increases anxiety and depression in adolescents
Without social media, there would be more face-to-face interaction, decreasing isolation
People would live in the moment, and
appreciate the beauty of life
However, the use of social media is only increasing
One day, there will be a way to manage the use of social media in order to
decrease depression
