We are delighted to welcome you to the 36th Annual ALDE International Educational Conference. With a first-rate curriculum assembled by the 2015 Conference Planning Committee, worship with your ALDE colleagues, a multitude of networking occasions, numerous opportunities to extend your learning and an exciting host city, we are sure you will enjoy your time at this conference.
This program book provides all the details you will need for your conference experience. You will also find other valuable items in this book and your registration materials, including the Networking List of 2015 conference participants, the Conference-At-A-Glance quick guide to events and handy maps of the hotel (see pp. 8-9). Your registration packet and this book also contain information from conference sponsors and exhibitors, regarding their products and services, which ALDE hopes you will take time to review. Also, please make sure to chat with these Resource Partners — they help make this event possible and are eager to learn how they can help fulfill your mission.
Need help or have a question? • The ALDE Office is located at the ALDE Registration Desk (second floor)• The hotel’s concierge is an excellent source of information about area attractions, transportation options and shopping/dining choices
Again, welcome! ... and thank you for your support of ALDE, and of those in need, through your important work. - The members of the 2015 Conference Planning Committee and ALDE Staff
Guest AttendanceA number of attendees have brought spouses and other family members to enjoy all that the exciting city of Reno has
to offer. The hotel’s concierge can help if your guest(s) need(s) assistance planning activities at area attractions.
Those without a full registration will have a special nametag. Keep this handy. There will be a $10 service charge assessed to any guest tickets purchased on site.

We Care About You — Pastoral and Medical Care
Pastoral care (ELCA, LCMS and WELS) and medical care are available for those in need — please stop by the ALDE Office at the ALDE Registration Desk on the second floor, or see ALDE Executive Director Phyllis Castens Wiederhoeft if care is required. For medical emergencies, call 911, then notify ALDE staff.
What is ELEA?ELEA is also known as ELCA Schools and Learning Centers, a group of administrators, teachers, board members and
pastors who serve Lutheran schools and early childhood centers. The ELEA National School Administrator & Pastor Conference (NSAPC) is being held in conjunction with the ALDE
conference. Please welcome these attendees and show them what ALDE hospitality and networking are all about! Learn more about ELEA at www.eleanational.org, or at the ELEA table in the Exhibit Resource Center. In case you haven’t heard, the NSAPC is an excellent short-form conference option for congregations, schools and early childhood centers. Attendees are like ALDE members — some of them are just learning how important it is to get serious about development while others have been professionally raising resources for decades.
All NSAPC attendees will join us for key early portions of the main conference, and ALDE attendees can attend the
NSAPC offerings available during Curriculum Sessions 1-3 if they wish.

Welcome Event - Base Camp at the HotelThis year ALDE is rewriting the script for the Welcome Event. No longer the usual gathering ...
this year, we start with the fun, food and frivolity ... at Base Camp! Gather onsite at the hotel (no walking or bus rides to another location), reconnect with old friends, meet new friends, eat, enjoy activities and then the evening concludes with worship and music to send us on our adventure in Reno. Plus, we will have more than just social time — take part in an exciting new way for you to learn from other attendees and begin the conference with a fresh outlook.
All attendees will start their climb to Meet at the Peak by arriving at Base Camp (a.k.a. the Welcome Event and Exhibit Resource Center). You will be assigned to one of the Hiking Teams based on your climbing gear. Notice that there are different color badge holders? We’ve formed affinity groups according to your organizational focus and assigned each a different color nametag holder and lanyard. Get to know your fellow hikers, both experienced and first-timers, with introductions, by swapping previous hiking stories and more. You then will meet up with another Hiking Team to make an Expedition Group that will depart on a journey guided by a Sherpa, one of our Resource Partners serving as a trail guide. Each group will travel to Survival Tents — themed food and drink stations — as your Sherpa guides you on your ascent and transition to the next Survival Tent. You haven’t had so much fun while learning, connecting and growing in a long time!

FOR YOUR INFORMATION
MEET AT THE PEAK
2015 CONFERENCE WORSHIP: ONE LORD, ONE FAITH, ONE BAPTISM
When we Meet at the Peak for worship, our time will center on the theme of “One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism,” bringing together the many backgrounds and traditions of the ALDE community. The worship services feature a new format for this conference as one speaker is going to share the message throughout the event. This featured leader will be Kurt Senske, sharing insights from his book, Wine and the Word: Savor & Serve. Worship texts will be drawn from biblical stories of meeting God on the heights as we follow the central theme of Psalm 121: “I lift my eyes to the heights.”
We are also excited that AriSon will lead the music for all of our worship services, in addition to offering a concert as part of the Welcome Event. In 2004, Jennie and Brian Williamson founded Christian record label AriSon Records in Franklin, Tennessee, a suburb of Nashville. Selling over 750,000 albums, it is estimated that they have touched the lives of over two million people with their music. They are ready to guide our spirits to another place as we meet to worship our Lord together.
SERVANT EVENTS: HELP OTHERS WITH THEIR CLIMB
While in Reno, we hope you will reach new heights and SERVE! As ALDE and ELEA are organizations with Christ-centered missions, the conference Servant Event offers a perfect way to live out God’s call for us to love and serve our neighbors. With hundreds of caring conference attendees coming to town, we have incredible capacity to make a difference!
We are partnering with the Reno-Sparks Gospel Mission to pack unique hygiene kits for the homeless in the area. You’ll be able to help pack these kits onsite at the conference hotel, and then they will be handed out on the Saturday following the conference as part of a walk for awareness. The kits feature an ingenious design as hygiene items are placed into tube socks, which are then given to those in need. That way, these people have a way to carry the items, and also get a new pair of socks.
Plan to help stuff the socks during the conference. Also, please give generously for offering at conference worship — your donations will help support RSGM. If you brought hygiene items, please drop them off at the Servant Event tables in the Exhibit Resource Center.
RSGM Ministry
The Reno-Sparks Gospel Mission’s primary mission is to help the homeless, hurting, abused and addicted in Northern
Nevada. Since 1963, RSGM has helped more than 200,000 adults and children. Every year they serve approximately 400,000 meals, provide 55,000 nights of shelter and give away 75,000 pieces of clothing. RSGM’s free residential Christian addiction recovery program offers 100 beds for those wanting to change their lives. As a home-grown organization, RSGM relies totally on private donations and does not receive government funding or tax monies. From the recovery program and shelter to hot meals and clothing, the Mission is here for anyone who is hurting and needs help!
Walk a Mile in My Shoes
Staying later? Join the annual RSGM “Walk a Mile in My Shoes!” event Saturday, February 28. More than 500 people
participate in a group walk from Wingfield Park in downtown Reno to the Mission. The walk takes place rain, snow or sunshine to give the participants the experience of what life can be like on the streets during a blustery time of the year. Walkers also pass out hygiene socks/kits to any homeless people they encounter along the way.
This event is not only for the homeless, but to also bring the community together for a worthy cause. The walk is ideal for large groups and families, and a special award is given to the largest group entry. As ALDE is already contributing to the mission, we are invited to stick around and participate in Walk a Mile in My Shoes as guests at no charge (registration is normally $30). It starts at 9:00 a.m. and should be finished around 10:30.

SPECIAL SESSIONS
Master ClassesMaster Classes are designed to provide more time (three hours) with the presenter and more in-depth content than is
available during the regular conference sessions. Two sessions are offered — see pp. 13-14 for details. There is an extra fee of $85 for each master class. If you want to attend but did not previously sign up, you’re still welcome, but please be prepared to pay at the door.
Fundamental/CoreFundamental courses provide a knowledge base upon which development professionals build and reinforce their craft
and careers. This knowledge provides a platform for the more specialized skills and concepts that are taught in other ALDE sessions. Fundamentals are the courses everyone should take, ideally within the first two years of their development career, regardless of their position focus. The content in these courses will not change much over time because the focus is on knowledge, not techniques. Look for one during each of the first six curriculum session times.
Resource SessionsALDE offers another educational option during curriculum sessions. Seven Resource Partners (exhibitors and sponsors)
will be presenting Resource Sessions about a variety of topics during regular curriculum time slots. View the session descriptions later in this book for more information on specific sessions. It’s a great way to get more information about, or become introduced to, all that our excellent Resource Partners offer! We haven’t cut the number of curriculum offerings per session, but have added to what is available. Please note that Resource Sessions are sponsored sessions, so the presenters may discuss how their products/services can help address the topic at hand. These sessions are not recorded. The presentations will take place in regular meeting rooms.
Mega Sessions - Session 7 - FridayThere are certain educational topics that cover broad swaths of the development profession. Therefore, we are
condensing the number of session offerings on Friday morning to bring you three 90 minute Mega Sessions (and one Resource Mega Session) that reflect such subjects. See these as “mini keynotes” that can spur your climb to greater success through what you’ve learned at the conference.
CFRE CERTIFICATION POINTS: CEUsFull participation in the 2015 ALDE International Educational Conference is applicable for 15.5 points in Category 1.B —
Education of the CFRE International application for initial certification and/or recertification. The CE Points Tracker form can be found on pp. 53-54. A certificate is available on p. 52.

Raising Money for Your Congregation and SchoolMike Ward
Have you ever done a $10,000 car wash? Can you imagine exceeding your ministry budget on an annual basis? Have you ever had someone say a fundraising event had more to do with baptismal covenant than with asking for money, yet it raised four times the money raised in the previous attempt?
Raising money in the congregation and school context is unique. Unfortunately, we have not modeled the best fundraising tactics and therefore we are often frustrated by both the process and the results. This session will explore both short term funding events as well as building sustainable annual fund models for your congregations and schools.

Acquire New Donors to Raise More Money Now — and Lots More in the FutureStephen Hitchcock
Your organization can raise more money only if it consistently acquires new donors — thus providing new prospects for major gifts and planned giving. Attrition of donors must be offset every year, and expanding the base of support helps offset fluctuations in funding from other sources.
This workshop will help you identify the best prospects as new donors — and the most effective techniques for converting those prospects into contributing donors. You will learn how to assess the costs and benefits of acquisition channels — direct mail, special events, telephone and online. Reactivating lapsed donors and other methods of offsetting attrition will be discussed. Also learn how to welcome new donors in a way that will boost their long-term value.

The Value of Design Thinking in Strategic PlanningChris Clark
Design thinking considers your outcomes and process in a way that is often overlooked in strategic planning. For colleges and universities — and specifically for development offices — the addition of design thinking provides a path to recommendations that can actually guide future purposes like your campaigns or project based fundraising. Many strategic planning processes aim to be specific, but the actual plans are overly broad such that nearly any future decision falls within the boundaries of the plan. With the addition of design thinking and the parameters used in it, additional future guidance is added.

Community Engagement: Growing Beyond MissionKevin Matheny and Gary Withers
The authors of Forces for Good have established that collaborating beyond an organization’s self-interest (even sublimating one’s own mission) can dramatically improve an organization’s societal impact. Today CU confidently stands at the threshold of a unique partnership between a faith-based university and an inner-city public school — one designed to meaningfully close the achievement gap, better prepare today’s future teachers and create a national model for collaboration.
They are ready to guide our spirits to another place as we prepare to return to our homes.
