Eucharistic Adoration
The Adoration Chapel is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for quiet prayer and meditation.
Operation Rice Bowl
In the spirit of Lenten almsgiving, rice bowls are available at the entrances to the church. By donating the proceeds from
our Lenten acts of self–denial, we follow the Lord’s command to care for the less fortunate.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation
Lent is the primary season of reconciliation in the Church year and everyone is encouraged to receive this Sacrament dur-
ing this time. This Sacrament is celebrated each Saturday from 4:00–4:45 P.M.
Lenten Regulations
Fasting: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast. This binds all Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59. On
days of fast, one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken ac-
cording to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, although
liquids, including milk and fruit juices, are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does
not oblige.
Abstinence: Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence for those over the age of 14.
On these days, no meat is allowed. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful.
Lenten Meal Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, may our Lenten fasting turn us toward all our brothers and sisters who are in need. Bless this table, our
food and ourselves. Send us through Lent with good cheer, and bring us quickly to your passover. In the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

FAITH FORMATION

Faithful Citizenship (February 14, 2016)
Last week we ended by looking at the virtue of prudence in the political realm. As the bishops put it: “Prudence ena-bles us to discern our true good in every circumstance and to choose the right means of achieving it. It shapes and in-forms our ability to deliberate over available alternatives, to determine what is most fitting to a specific context, and to act decisively.” In the political realm, sometimes the most heated debates have to do with differences over the most pru-dent means to an agreed-upon end. Even within our Church, good and faithful Catholics who share common values and moral principles often differ strongly over the prudential applications of these values and principles.
Nevertheless, the bishops also remind us that morality and politics cannot just be about prudential decisions regarding the most effective means to an agreed-upon end. We must also ask tough questions about the morality of the means to an end: “As we all seek to advance the common good — by defending the inviolable sanctity of human life from the mo-ment of conception until natural death, by defending marriage, by feeding the hungry and housing the homeless, by wel-coming the immigrant and protecting the environment — it is important to recognize that not all possible courses of ac-tion are morally acceptable. There are some things we must never do, as individuals or as a society, because they are always incompatible with love of God and neighbor. Such actions are so deeply flawed that they are always opposed to the authentic good of persons. These are called ‘intrinsically evil’ actions. They must always be rejected and opposed and must never be supported or condoned. A prime example is the intentional taking of innocent human life.”
The bishops go on to list the following as “intrinsically evil actions”: abortion, euthanasia, destructive research on hu-man embryos, genocide, rape, torture, racism, and the targeting of noncombatants in acts of terror or war. Human beings can never be used as mere means to an end, even if that end is a good one. While the obtaining of valuable information from detained terrorists can serve the good end of preventing further attacks, there are moral limits to the means that can be used to obtain this information. The good end of discovering cures for terrible human diseases cannot be used to justify the use of any means to obtain such cures, such as embryonic stem-cell research.
While taking a strong stand on pro-life issues, the bishops are careful to connect these to a whole range of human rights: “The right to life implies and is linked to other human rights — to the basic goods that every human person needs to live and thrive. All the life issues are connected, for erosion of respect for the life of any individual or group in society necessarily diminishes respect for all life. The moral imperative to respond to the needs of our neighbors — basic needs such as food, shelter, health care, education, and meaningful work — is universally binding on our consciences and may be legitimately fulfilled by a variety of means. Catholics must seek the best ways to respond to these needs. As Pope John XXIII taught, “each of us has the right to life, to bodily integrity, and to the means which are suitable for the proper development of life; these are primarily food, clothing, shelter, rest, medical care, and, finally, the necessary social ser-vices.”
Joseph Cardinal Bernardin used the beautiful image of a “seamless garment” (Jn 19:23) to describe how all of the life issues are woven together. He was concerned that different Catholics were picking and choosing among which life issues to focus on, with the result that the Church’s “consistent ethic of life” was being undermined. Among American Catholics today there seems to be a divide between those who focus on the abortion issue and those who focus on social justice issues such as poverty, war, and the death penalty. The former group tends to claim the title of “pro-life”, while the later group tends to claim the title of “social justice”. Clearly this seems to be a false dichotomy. All Catholics are called to be pro-life, and this must go beyond being simply anti-abortion. And all Catholics are called to seek social justice, and cer-tainly the denial of the right to life of an unborn child is a grave injustice indeed. Pope John Paul II reminds us: “The com-mon outcry, which is justly made on behalf of human rights — for example, the right to health, to home, to work, to family, to culture — is false and illusory if the right to life, the most basic and fundamental right and the condition for all other personal rights, is not defended with maximum determination.”
The bishops warn us: “Two temptations in public life can distort the Church’s defense of human life and dignity: 1) The first is a moral equivalence that makes no ethical distinctions between different kinds of issues involving human life and dignity. The direct and intentional destruction of innocent human life from the moment of conception until natural death is always wrong and is not just one issue among many. It must always be opposed. 2) The second is the misuse of these necessary moral distinctions as a way of dismissing or ignoring other serious threats to human life and dignity.

Cozy Feet Campaign
Calling all Visitation School and Religious Education
Students! Let’s work together to help the homeless.
Imagine what it is like to be homeless and living through
the winter months without any socks to keep your feet warm!
As part of our efforts to help local PADS shelters, we
are collecting as many new socks for the homeless shelter
as we possibly can, and we need your help. If you can
please remember the homeless people during this Lenten
season and pick up some new socks for them, it would go
a long way in brightening someone’s day. If you do not
have time to shop, a gift card that can be used to purchase
socks would also be greatly appreciated. We have volun-
teers to shop for the socks.
Please note: the socks we are looking for need to be brand
new in order to be distr ibuted to the people at the shelter
so that issues such as athlete’s feet are prevented. Please put
the new socks or gift cards in the big box located in our
School Lobby labeled:
“Cozy Feet Campaign.”

Divine Mercy Corner
Jesus said to St. Faustina: “My daughter, encourage souls
to say the (Divine Mercy) chaplet …. It pleases Me to grant
everything they ask of Me by saying the chaplet. When hard-
ened sinners say it, I will fill their souls with peace, and the
hour of their death will be a happy one.” (Diary, 1541)

Being Valentine = Martyrdom
Today we celebrate St. Valentine’s Day. What is surpris-
ing is that there are actually two St. Valentines who lived in
the second century. One was a priest and one was a bishop
but both were beheaded for their faith in Christ. How has
the sending of Valentines evolved from this? It really has-
n’t. Sending Valentines originated in medieval times be-
cause it was believed that birds began to pair off on that
day. Happy lovebirds flying off together would seem to be
the very antithesis of martyrdom. And yet…
To whom can we fly that we know loves us best? Jesus.
And where will he take us? To Heaven. When? Now. Heav-
en on earth is in the Adoration Chapel. It is in your heart.
When we sit with our Lord in silence we can hear his loving
words, “You are my beloved child, on you my favor rests.”
Fr. Nouwen. Allow your heart to beat one with His. You may hear
things that make you blush. “The real ‘work’ of prayer is to
become silent and listen to the voice that says good things
about me.” Fr. Nouwen. The world may tell you otherwise
but God’s desire is to bless you and fill you with his love.
St. John Paul II summed it up best when he said, “We are
not the sum of our weaknesses and failures, we are the sum
of the Father’s love.”
The martyrdom of thinking only of the beloved is real. It
is the mark of true love. This Lent take time to visit the
King of kings, the Lord of lords, the Valentine of valentines.
He sees the best in you, may you become your best through
Him.
There are empty hours in need of true hearts willing to
spend time with Our Lord. They are as follows:
Saturday: 12:00 midnight-1:00 A.M.; 11A.M.-12:00
noon; 2:00-3:00 P.M.; 7:00-8:00 P.M.; 11:00 P.M.-12:00 mid-
night, Sunday: 12:00 midnight-1:00 A.M.; 11:00 A.M.-12:00
noon, Monday: 7:00-8:00 A.M., Friday: 1:00-2:00 A.M.;
10:00-11:00 A.M.; 5:00-6:00 P.M.; 9:00-10:00 P.M.;

Dante’s Inferno
Midway upon the journey of our life -I found myself in a dark wilderness, For I had wandered from the straight and true…
Thus begins the greatest masterpiece of Western litera-ture, the Divine Comedy, by Dante Alighieri. These are the words of a man who lived and wrote approximately 700 years ago about the most basic concerns of mankind as he faced what modern man would call a “mid-life” crisis. The Divine Comedy is the account of a journey taken by Dante the pilgrim through the three realms of the afterlife: hell, purgatory and Heaven. He takes this journey at the behest of the Blessed Mother who, out of maternal concern for his soul, sends guides to help Dante come to understand the nature of sin and how, in loving rightly, to respond to di-vine grace.
Join us in discussing this great book, the Inferno, in the Fireside Room, Parish Center, 9:30-11:30 A.M. on Thursday, February 25. For a study guide or with any questions about our meeting, please contact Madonna Muscarello at 630-325-7990 or at [email protected]. We will be reading and discussing the Purgatorio next year.
