Dear Students and Parents:

Happy New Year! I appreciate the opportunity this Newsletter provides to share with you some updates on how we continue to raise the level of excellence at the already excellent school of Rolling Meadows High School. I will be sharing with you how we are expanding our Project Lead The Way (PLTW) engineering program to include manufacturing, some of the amazing fundraising our Rotary Interact Club did this past December for a school in Ghana, provide you with an update to the effectiveness of our Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) tardy initiative and share with you our excitement over our fall play, Figments being chosen to participate in the 2013 Illinois High School Theatre Festival.

I am pleased to announce that for the 2013-2014 school year, we are expanding our Project Lead The Way (PLTW) engineering program. We currently offer the courses of Introduction to Engineering and Design (IED) and Civil Engineering and Architecture (CEA). The IED and CEA courses focus on the design process and hands-on projects where students apply engineering standards. Students use industry standard 3D modeling software to help them design solutions to solve proposed problems, and communicate solutions to peers. After taking the IED class, students can enroll in the CEA course or take the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) classes, followed by Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM). The NIMS and CIM classes will be new to Rolling Meadows High School. These courses teach how things are made and what processes go into creating products. Students will work on computers designing products as well as work in a machinery lab setting to build their creations. Students will learn about the history of manufacturing, robotics and automation, computer modeling, and manufacturing equipment. These courses are excellent for students interested in engineering, programming, and manufacturing. There are growing opportunities for students that are well versed in engineering and manufacturing and my hope is many students will take advantage of these opportunities available to them in their very own high school.

Around this time last year, in partnership with the Arlington Heights and Rolling Meadows Rotaries, we formed an Interact Club at Rolling Meadows High School. The Interact Club focuses on both local and international projects during the school year. The leaders of this program include instructors, Linda Pribyl and Eileen Senteno, Rotarians, Krista Paul and Mildred Palmer, and myself. In December, the students of Interact decided to support a fundraising effort to build a school in Ghana, Africa, for children recently freed from slavery. In collaboration with Amanda Larson and Jake Roble from the organization of Compassionate Journey, the students created several events to raise funds for the school in Ghana. Led by the student co-presidents of the club, Lisa Dieckman and Jaime Pitts, the students sold t-shirts, sold raffle tickets for a variety of prizes, including an iPad mini, played the song “Baby” by Justin Bieber each passing period until $1,000 was raised, and created a “Kiss the Pig” contest. The “Kiss the Pig” contest organized and gave charge to 16 staff members, myself included, to raise funds for the cause. The staff member that raised the least amount of money would have to kiss the pig “Pedro” at the Girls Varsity Basketball game on December 7, 2012. The weeklong activities were a big success, and just over $10,000 was raised. Amazing! The ground breaking ceremony for the school to be built will begin this summer in Ghana, thanks in great part to the Interact Club and the supportive students and community members of Rolling Meadows High School.

In the fall of 2011 there was an average of over 45 students tardy each day to school. We implemented tardy tables starting the second semester of last year and created PBIS videos to teach students why it is important to arrive on time to school each day. These initiatives led to a 36% reduction in tardies, and we now average roughly 30 tardies each day.

I ask for your support to encourage your sons and daughters to get up a little earlier and leave home a little earlier, so that all students can arrive on time each day for class. Thank you in advance for your positive support.

Finally, I wanted to share with you our excitement that Rolling Meadows High School’s fall play, Figments, by Billy St. John, was selected to be performed during the 2013 Illinois High School Theatre Festival held January 10th through January 12th at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. The production went through an adjudication process and was chosen as one of approximately 25 top plays to be performed during the three-day festival. Approximately 50 Rolling Meadows High School students comprising the cast and crew of Figments participated, under the guidance of director, Mary Luckritz and other staff members, including technical director, Paul Dombrowski, costumer, Kate McNally and lighting designer, Charlotte Rathke. The cast was comprised of seniors, Brian Stumph, Bridget Sullivan, Marty Quinn, Korinne Yonan, Natalia Torchalski and Dan Divane; juniors Hugo SanRoman, Sarah Rosenberg and Julia Palmer; sophomores Omar Banuelos, Kristina Myers, Athena Kopulos, Tyler Martens, Hannah Yonan and Nathaniel Lindstrom; and freshmen, Jake Rosenberg, Richard Eyre and Danielle Ponsot. They performed before an audience of over 1,000 at Foellinger Auditorium and received rave reviews.

In addition to our fall play being presented, Dawn Walters, senior, was selected to be part of the stage crew of Memphis, the All-State Theatre Festival Show that was also performed that same weekend. The staff and administration of Rolling Meadows High School is very proud of the achievements of these outstanding students.

Estimados padres y estudiantes: Feliz Año Nuevo! Aprecio la oportunidad que este boletín me proporciona de compartir con ustedes algunas noticias de cómo continuamos elevando el nivel de excelencia en esta ya excelente escuela de Rolling Meadows High School. Estaré compartiendo con ustedes como estamos expandiendo nuestro programa de ingeniería “Proyecto Muéstrame el Camino” (Project Lead the Way), para incluir manufactura, algunas de las recaudaciones de fondos maravillosas que nuestro Rotary Interact Club hizo este diciembre pasado para una escuela en Ghana, ponerlos al día con la eficacia de PBIS (Intervenciones Positivas y Apoyo con Conducta) con nuestra iniciativa en tardanzas y compartir con ustedes nuestra emoción sobre la obra de teatro del otoño Figments que fue escogida para participar en el Festival de Teatro de Escuelas Secundarias 2013 (2013 Illinois High School Theatre Festival).

Me alegra anunciar que para el año escolar 2013-2014, estamos expandiendo nuestro programa de ingeniería “Proyecto Muéstrame el Camino” (PLTW). Después de tomar la clase IED, estudiantes pueden tomar el curso de CEA o tomar las clases del Instituto Nacional de Habilidades Metalúrgicas (NIMS), seguido por Manufactura Integrada Computarizada (CIM). Las clases NIMS y CIM van a ser nuevas en Rolling Meadows High School. Estos cursos enseñan como se hacen las cosas y que procesos se usan para crear productos. Los estudiantes trabajaran con computadoras diseñando productos así como trabajar en un taller con maquinas para construir sus creaciones. Los estudiantes van a aprender sobre la historia de manufactura, robótica y automatización, modelación computarizada y equipo de manufactura. Estos cursos son excelentes para estudiantes interesados en ingeniería, programación, y manufactura. Hay oportunidades de crecimiento para estudiantes que tienen mucho conocimiento en ingeniería y manufactura y mi esperanza es que muchos estudiantes van a tomar ventaja de estas oportunidades disponibles para ellos en su propia escuela.

Por estas fechas el año pasado, en asociación con los Clubs Rotarios (Rotary Clubs) de Arlington Heights y Rolling Meadows, formamos el Club Interact en Rolling Meadows High School. Este club Interact se enfoca en ambos proyectos locales e internacionales durante el año escolar. Los lideres de este programa incluyen las maestras Linda Pribyl y Eileen Senteno, las señoras, Krista Paul y Mildred Palmer, y yo. En diciembre, los estudiantes del Club Interact decidieron apoyar un esfuerzo de recaudar fondos para construir una escuela en Ghana, África, para niños recientemente liberados de la esclavitud. Finalmente, quiero compartir con ustedes nuestra emoción de que nuestra obra de teatro Figments, escrita por Billy St. John, fue seleccionada para ser actuada durante el Festival de Teatro de Escuelas Secundarias 2013, el 10 al 12 de enero en la Universidad de Illinois en Urbana-Champaign. La producción pasó por un proceso de ajuste y fue seleccionada como una de 25 obras aproximadamente para actuar durante el festival de tres días. FIGMENTS Cast & Crew Selected to Perform at State Festival Rolling Meadows High School's cast and crew of the fall comedy, Figments

by Billy St. John, were honored when they were selected to perform at the

Illinois High School Theatre Festival in January 2013. Forty-eight

talented students made up the cast and crew. Students were expected to

put up the full set in three hours, perform, and take down the set in one

hour. At the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, the show was

featured at the Foellinger Auditorium, which seats about three times the

audience members more than the RMHS theatre does.

the state attended the show on Friday night

and gave a rousing standing ovation to the

Freshman College Visit to NIU

Not all students have the opportunity to visit a college campus before they apply their senior year. To address this issue, the Student Services Department has organized a college visit for all freshmen. During the week of April 15, freshmen will travel with their seminar to visit Northern Illinois University.

On the trip, students will speak with admissions representatives, learn about student involvement and leadership development, have the opportunity to ask questions to a diverse panel of students, eat lunch in a dining hall, and take a walking tour of campus. They will leave with a better understanding and picture of a state university.

Students should contact their counselor about their 2013-2014 electives BEFORE February 15, 2013. No elective course selections will be changed after the deadline.

SOS: Signs of Suicide Prevention Program Data RMHS implemented the SOS: Signs of Suicide Prevention Program that was aimed at educating all freshmen, teachers, and parents on the signs and symptoms of depression and suicide during late October and early November. The goal of the program was to accomplish the following:

• To help our students understand that depression is a treatable illness, and to help them assess whether or not they may have symptoms consistent with depression.

• To provide students training in how to identify the warning signs of depression and potential suicidal ideation in a friend.

• To impress upon teens that they can help themselves or a friend by taking the important step of talking to a responsible adult about their concerns.

As a result of the program, students were able to increase their knowledge of depression as evidence by a comparison of a pre-test and post-test that were administered both prior to and after the completion of implementing the SOS: Signs of Suicide Prevention Program. The results are as follows:

• On average, students increased knowledge on content questions by 19% when comparing pre-test and post-test results.

• 83% or more students report that they: o Feel comfortable identifying when they need to seek help for themselves o Feel comfortable indentifying when a friend may need help o Have an adult at RMHS they can speak with if they need help o Have an adult they could speak with outside of school o Feel that implementing a suicide prevention program is needed in our school.

• 91% or more students report that they: o Know the signs and symptoms of depression and suicide o Know how to seek help from a trusted adult. o Know when to seek help from a trusted adult.

Furthermore, a screening form was completed by all freshmen as part of the program to determine if they were at-risk of experiencing symptoms of depression. As a result of this screening, the Student Services Department Staff followed-up with students that were considered at-risk. The data indicated:

• 63 students needed to be followed-up with by Student Service Staff (12.5% or 1 out of 8 freshmen) • 19 students stated they were actively suicidal/or tried to kill themselves in the past year • 49 students came up at-risk based on responses indicating they were experiencing symptoms of depression • 13 students requested to speak with someone about self or a friend

Results of the follow-up with at-risk students by the Student Services Department Staff included:

• Recommendation to parents to have an immediate mental health assessment completed to determine if intensive services are needed for the student

• Recommendation for students to engage in immediate assessment with a current therapist in the community • Community-based counseling referrals given to offer support • Students referred to participate in school-based group counseling services • Students being individually followed-up with by counselor/staff

Overall, through the implementation of the SOS: Signs of Suicide Prevention Program, students indicated that they acquired knowledge on the symptoms of depression, learned how and when to seek help for themselves or a friend, and identified a trusted adult they can seek in times of need. In addition, it allowed the Student Services Department the opportunity to intervene with students who were at-risk for depression. Boys in Peril(An AVID Actvity for Students, Families and Friends)

AVID students, families, friends and staff members of RMHS have been invited to attend a showing of a feature-length film entitled “Boys in Peril.” The film will be shown on Friday night, February 8, 2013 in the WHS auditorium. Please mark your calendars.

In an effort to better understand our dwindling college-bound American population, Los Angeles filmmaker Graham Streeter embeds himself in East Los Angeles, where he befriends Julio, Edgar, and Abel: three Latino high school seniors; each attempting to navigate through the daunting and challenging transition between high school and college in their own unique ways.

The feature-length essay is a compelling look into the common obstacles that face young Hispanic men who truly aspire to better their lives by obtaining a college education and the goodness of teachers, parents and programs that strive to make that possible.

Streeter captures the realistic, inspirational yet heart-wrenching angle to each boy’s journey, while still underscoring its big picture relevance; its economic and social impact on our nation as a whole.

The evening is sponsored by the AVID program at WHS.

What have the AVID students been doing first semester? The AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) students have had a very active first semester. They have learned how to become better organized through various activities, including regular binder checks. The students have learned new ways of learning using WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading to Learn), tutorials, Cornell Notes, collaborative study groups, reflection and evaluation. Over the course of the semester students were able to hear from, and ask questions of, various guest speakers. The speakers included:

Welcome to February 2013! Believe it or not, graduation is not too far away. Senior use of the CCR for applications to schools has all almost stopped but there has been a dramatic increase in the number of seniors using the CCR to explore scholarship opportunities. Seniors are encouraged to frequent the CCR and/or webpage to check for new scholarship postings. Students should be mindful of scholarship application deadlines and the CCR processing time that is needed. The numbers for the Class of 2013, as of December 21, are:

Information for Seniors

Parents – have you asked your senior if they have submitted any applications? 292 of our 444 seniors have submitted at least one application. That is 66% of the senior class. Over 90% of last year’s graduating class applied to a two-year or four-year school, so we still have a way to go. Even if your daughter or son is thinking of attending a two-year school it would be to their advantage to get their application in as soon as possible. Please have a conversation with your daughter/son about their post high school plans.

Our District 214 Senior Financial Aid Night was held in the theatre at the Forest View Educational Center (FVEC) on December 12. With over 650 people in attendance, the program was very well attended.

The scheduled presenter for the program was Mr. Jerry Cebrzynski, Director of Financial Assistance at Lake Forest College. Mr. Cebrzynski was unable to present that evening so, in his place, the presentation was conducted by Mr. Mark Anderson, Assistant Director of Financial Assistance at Lake Forest College. Mr. Anderson’s PowerPoint for the presentation, as well as an informational booklet about financial aid and a financial aid sheet published by the U.S. Department of Education, can be viewed by going to the CCR webpage at:

www.rmhs.d214.org/college_resources/default.aspx D214 College Counselors will be hosting a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Completion Night on Tuesday, February 5, in the library at Wheeling High School (WHS), which is located at 900 South Elmhurst Road, in Wheeling. Attendees, seniors and/or their parents, will be able to complete and submit their FAFSA that night. Two sessions (6:30 and 7:30) will be available. To register for the program please call Mrs. Austin at (847) 718-7046. Parents are encouraged to have completed their 2012 tax returns before attending the workshop. While March 1 is the most common priority filing date, some schools have an earlier date. Be sure to check with your school(s) about their priority filing date.

Seniors who are awarded, and accept, any offers of scholarship, are asked to share that information with Miss Arvia by completing a short form that is available in the CCR and the Main Office. A copy of the form also follows this newsletter piece. The information can then be included in the commencement program booklet. Failure to notify the CCR by completing the form can result in the omission of the scholarship’s acknowledgement in the commencement booklet. Only the award, not the dollar amount, is noted in the booklet. The deadline to submit the completed forms is May 15, 2013. We appreciate students sharing the admissions decisions they received from all of the schools to which they applied.

Males turning 18 (including non-citizen legal residents) must register with the Selective Service. This can be done on line (www.sss.gov/regist.htm), or at a U.S. Post Office Branch. You can also call (847) 688-4638 for more specific information. Registration for the Selective Service can also be done as part of the FAFSA application.

Looking ahead, May 1 is important for seniors, and their college plans, for at least two reasons. First, seniors must make sure to send in their acceptance, or decision, to the school they have chosen to attend by May 1, the Universal Reply Day. If they do not they risk their decision offer. Second, students are encouraged to wear a school shirt, or the school colors if they don’t have a shirt, representing the school they will be attending next fall – a Rolling Meadows High School tradition for a number of years.

Information for Juniors

The second formal group guidance of juniors will begin on Monday, February 4, and will end on February 22. Students will come from their U.S. History classes to do a graded activity designed to familiarize them with the resources and procedures of the CCR. Additionally, students will be navigated through the CCR webpage, given a “refresher” on the Naviance Program (even completing a college search) and be trained on Career Cruising - another District 214 subscription program for college and career searches. Be sure to ask your daughter/son to tell you about and, if you have internet access at home, show you the CCR webpage and both the Naviance and Career Cruising Programs. Parents of juniors will be sent a postcard inviting them to an informational presentation, in the Rolling Meadows High School (RMHS) Theatre at 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, February 20. The program will review the December (Junior Guidance I) and February (Junior Guidance II) Programs. Parents in attendance will be given an unofficial copy of their student’s transcript. Parents will also be invited to see the CCR. Juniors will be able to schedule individual appointments in the CCR beginning Friday, February 22. Although having a meeting with the college counselor is not a prerequisite for graduation, many students/parents find having a meeting useful. Who should schedule a meeting? Students/parents who are looking for suggestions of schools to consider and parents for whom this is their first student going to college tend to find the meetings most useful. Parents are encouraged to attend scheduled appointments with their student. No appointments are scheduled without the student. Students/parents who are clearly decided about their school choices usually do not need an appointment as they can get answers to questions they have by telephone, visiting the CCR, attending our evening presentations, or by visiting our website (noted above). For students/parents who would like to schedule an appointment it would be best to have the appointment in the junior year rather than waiting until the senior year. If the appointment takes place before the fall, the student will be able to:

• get a thorough review of her/his transcript to check for errors and review course selections. • more productively attend the District 214 College Fair at Harper College on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 (if they

have their meeting before the fair).• start visiting schools, with more focus, as early as this spring and to continue touring schools over the

summer. • visit with representatives of identified schools that come to the CCR this spring as well as those that come

next fall.• focus her/his energy on applications in the fall as opposed to having to 1) research schools, 2) maintain their

academic focus, AND 3) complete applications. In the fall the ideal time to file applications is between September 3 and November 1.

While you will receive postcard invitations to the following D214 College Counselor sponsored events (all held at the Forest View Educational Center, 2121 South Goebbert Road, in Arlington Heights), you may want to pencil them into your calendar:

1. Break-Out Sessions (Wednesday, February 27). Parents/students can choose to attend two of five topics that will be presented in two 40-minute sessions. The topics to choose from will be: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Programs and Careers, Selective Schools, Liberal Arts, Studying in Canada or the United Kingdom and Performing Arts.

2. Junior Financial Aid Night (Tuesday, March 19). Back by popular demand, the presenter for the annual program will again be Mr. John Hammond, College Counselor at Wheeling High School. Get an early peak into financing your student’s education and learn some valuable information about the financial aid process.

All of these programs are offered in advance of, and in preparation for, the annual District 214 College Night. This year’s college night is scheduled for Tuesday, April 2 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:30 P.M. at Harper College. Use the following link for updates on the schools that confirmed their intent to attend:

Registration for the exam will begin when students return from spring break. As part of the exams students take a free ACT exam. Many students will use the results of that exam when they apply to colleges before November 1 next fall. Juniors are encouraged, however, to take at least one more ACT exam, with the preferred date being the June 8 exam, the deadline for which is May 3. Parents: please remind your juniors to come well-rested, and on time, to the Prairie State Exam days and to any future ACT test dates. Don’t forget full batteries for their calculators and pencils, too! Juniors are encouraged to stop by the CCR to check which colleges will be visiting our school this semester. Additionally, juniors can find, on the bulletin board outside of the CCR, information about open houses and school visit programs that different schools have sent. Spring break is a great time for students to visit the schools that they are considering. Another option for juniors is to participate in summer programs available at different universities. Check school websites to see if the school(s) offer summer programs or go to the CCR website homepage and check under “Summer Programs” to find programs offered by different schools. JUNIORS - As part of the PSAE exams, students take a free ACT exam. Students may use the results of this exam when applying to colleges.

Reminder: NO WRITING – The State of Illinois has eliminated the writing component of the ACT for PSAE testing. Juniors are strongly encouraged to take a full ACT Plus Writing test during one of the national ACT test dates. Please see the ACT website www.ACT.org for testing dates and registration.

Participants will be assessed to determine their levels of skill in English, math, reading and science reasoning.

Seminars will focus on developing skills that require students to solve problems, draw conclusions, make inferences and think analytically. Students will learn how the ACT is scored and develop test-taking strategies to help improve their scores.

This seminar is not individualized academic tutoring; it is a review of the high school core curriculum.

Attention SENIORS: This is a reminder to those of you who qualified for SPRING FINAL EXAMINATION EXEMPTIONS. Rolling Meadows High School seniors earned exemptions on their second-semester final exams if they met all the following criteria:

• met or exceeded Illinois Prairie State Achievement Examination (PSAE) standards in Reading, Mathematics, Science and Writing when you took that test in the spring of your junior year

• maintain a C average or better in each class for which they seek an exemption

• have no discipline referrals their senior year

Students that qualified for this have already received a letter from Ms. Stanley.

A list will be generated in early May to make sure that you still qualify for the spring test exemptions. Students will always have the option of taking the final exams if they wish to do so to improve their grades.

We want to continually reward our students for achieving academic successes.

Library CornerBy Mike Kic

The library continues to be a popular gathering place for students, especially in the morning and during both lunch periods. Students can ask for assistance on their assignments, inquire about the many new books on dis-play, or simply use one of the tables for a class project. Of course, students are always welcome to read or study in one of the comfortable chairs located near the library entrance.

During seminar, the library is transformed into a busy Academic Resource Center. If a student needs help in almost any subject area, there are at least ten teachers available for tutoring. Additionally, the library computer lab is open for writing and research. If your son or daughter wishes to use the Academic Resource Center during seminar, please remind him or her to obtain a pass from a classroom teacher.

We have had two well-attended student book discussions this year. The first, on November 2nd, was a discussion on Veronica Roth’s Insurgent, the popular sequel to Divergent. The second, held on December 7th, included some lively banter on The Hobbit. As expected, the students who came were excited to discuss the book, especially since the new movie was going to be released on December 14th. While the book discussion dates for second semester have not been determined yet, there will be notices in the student announcements and the library sometime during January and February.

Although April 5th is a long way off, it is never too late for your son or daughter to start thinking about the RMHS Annual Poetry Slam. Held in the library during both lunch periods, this popular event always attracts many partici-pants and attendees alike. Students have approximately two minutes to either read a poem they have written, or recite a poem by a favorite poet. There will be plenty of posters and notices on the student announcements promoting the event.

Dear Parents of Incoming Freshman:

Subject: Required 9th grade physicals & immunizations information for entrance into Rolling Meadows High School

Enclosed is a Certificate of Child Health Examination for you to bring to your physician’s office that must be completed and forwarded with your registration materials. The physical exam must be dated after August 21, 2012.

Please feel free to schedule the physical as soon as possible. You may turn in the original as soon as the physical is completed. Please note: PARENTS MUST COMPLETE AND SIGN THE HEALTH HISTORY SECTION of the physical form.

New for 2012: Each student must have a documented Tdap vaccination. DTaP, DT, or Td vaccinations are not acceptable. The last Polio vaccine needs to be given after 4 years of age. There needs to be two Measles vaccines with the 1st being on or after the first birthday. Rubella & Mumps need to be given after 12 months of age. According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, students must have all three Hepatitis B Vaccines documented to enter 9th grade. All incoming freshman must show proof of Varicella (Chickenpox) vaccination on or after their first birthday. All immunizations should be documented on the 9th grade physical form.

Due to the Student Records Amendment of 2012 the junior high sends very limited information to me. It would be to your advantage to request a copy of the medical records for the high school, especially if your student has medical concerns.

Remember, we do have *FIRST DAY EXCLUSION*, which means that if a student is missing either the 9th grade physical form or any immunizations, he or she will be sent home, until they are in compliance with the law. To eliminate any possibility of exclusion, DO NOT wait until the 1st day of school to bring the physical and immunizations. Please get the completed forms to me no later than June 1, 2013. Thank you for working with us to keep your child in school!

Adjunto se encuentra el Certificado de Examinación de Salud que tiene que llevar a la oficina de su doctor y el cual tiene que ser completado y devuelto a la escuela con el resto de los documentos requeridos para la inscripción de su hijo(a). El examen físico tiene que tener una fecha después del 21 de agosto del 2012.

Por favor haga la cita para el examen físico tan pronto sea posible. Puede entregar el certificado original en cuanto esté completo. ATENCIÓN: LOS PADRES TIENEN QUE LLENAR Y FIRMAR LA SECCIÓN DEL HISTORIAL DE SALUD DEL CERTIFICADO.

Nuevo desde del 2012: Cada estudiante tiene que tener documentada la vacuna Tdap (Tetano/Difteria/Tos Ferina combinada) recibida dentro de los últimos 10 años (después del 8/22/02). Las vacunas DTaP, DT o Td no son aceptadas. La última vacuna de Polio tiene que ser aplicada después de los 4 años de edad. Asimismo se necesitan dos aplicaciones de la vacuna del Sarampión. La primera debió aplicarse durante el primer año de edad. Las vacunas para la Rubéola y Paperas se deben de aplicar después de los 12 meses de edad. Según el Departamento de Salud Pública de Illinois, todos los estudiantes tienen que tener las tres vacunas para la Hepatitis B al entrar al noveno grado. Todos los estudiantes entrando al noveno grado tienen que mostrar prueba de la vacuna de varicela (Chickenpox) en el día de o después de su primer cumpleaños. Todas las vacunas deben estar documentadas en el Certificado de Examinación Física del noveno grado.

Debido a la Enmienda de los Expedientes del Estudiante del 2012 la secundaria me manda información muy limitada. Seria a su favor pedir una copia de los expedientes médicos para la escuela Rolling Meadows High School, especialmente si su estudiante tiene problemas médicos.

Recuerde que los estudiantes que se presenten al primer día de clases sin sus vacunas completas y sin su examen físico serán excluidos de la escuela hasta que estén en cumplimiento con la ley. Career and Technical Education prepares Rolling Meadows High School students for a wide range of careers and job opportunities. The CTE division is made up of four areas: Family and Consumer Sciences, Business/Marketing, Computer Science, and Technology. Besides academic classes, the CTE division offers a variety of related extra curricular activities. Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA):

• FCCLA has made a BIG impact this year already! In the fall FCCLA held a caramel apple fundraiser with proceeds donated to a baby blanket project. Mustangs Committed to Service (MCS) and FCCLA created blankets for the D214 teen parent program. FCCLA has also teamed up with the Rolling Meadows Senior Citizens Quilters Club and raised funds for a scholarship given to a senior student interested in pursuing a career in the Fashion industry.

• The FCCLA members are getting ready for their competition season, which starts February 15th at Harper College. Students will compete in over 20 different events including cake or cookie decorating, preschool storytelling, and fashion construction. Good luck to all competing members!

WildStang Robotics: • Congratulations to the WildStang Robotics Team for sponsoring

one of the co-champions of the 4th Annual Vex Robotics Regional held at Rolling Meadows High School. Thirty-Six teams from Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois participated in the event. Four teams were from Rolling Meadows. The students on the winning team are: Alex DeChristofano, Trevor Franz, Zach Kuenstle, Marc Pontello, Isidro Anda, Andrew Kemper, and Eric Wood.

• The winning team partnered with Team 1200 “Syntax Error”, from St. Mary Central High School in Neenah, Wisconsin and Team 2177 “The F.I.V.E.” from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin to win the competition.

• Students on the WildStang Robotics Team are enrolled in Robotics 1, 2, 3, or 4.. This year, sixty-four students are on the team. The team is comprised of students from Rolling Meadows, Wheeling and Prospect High Schools. On Saturday, January 5, the rules for the new FIRST Robotics Competition will be revealed and then the team will have six weeks to design and build a robot. The WildStang team will

compete in the Wisconsin Regional March 21-23, the Midwest Regional April 4-6, and the Championship in St. Louis April 25-27.

• In the last 18 years, the team has won three world championships, finished second twice, and they have won the “Chairman’s Award” for best overall team. This year, over 2,600 teams and 52,000 high school students world-wide will participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition.

DECA: • This year Rolling Meadows High School DECA is off to a wonderful start. We have four members who

placed in the top three during our North Suburban Area Conference held at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center on December 4th. Taking awards for 2nd place overall in Apparel and Accessories Marketing was Alexandra Guli. For the Retail Merchandising event Prithvi Ramesh won 2nd place overall. Matt Targos won 3rd place for his first roll play in the Marketing Management Series event. Ian Fitzgerald won 1st place overall in the Food Marketing event and 2nd place for the Entrepreneurship Innovation Plan. These students, and others who have completed a written event, will be competing at our state conference in Decatur, IL March 7-9.

• Our DECA members have been working hard to operate our

student run business, Brewhaha. Brewhaha sells coffee, hot chocolate, and other beverages Friday morning in the CTE hallway from 6:45 am until 7:15 am. Proceeds from our sales go towards off setting the expense of travel to our State and International competitions as well as our charitable causes Muscular Dystrophy Association and the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago. Thank you for supporting us!

Future Educators of America (FEA):

• FEA is an organization open to all students who

are interested in leadership experiences. Students in FEA volunteer at local schools, work with people with special needs at NWSRA, fundraise to help students in need and are pen pals with elementary schools. Autos Club: • The Autos Club is for any student interested in automotives. Students

do not need to be in an autos class to join. We meet every Thursday and work in the shop from 2:45 until 6:30. In October the Autos Club hosted their 3rd annual Car Show. Over 20 students volunteered their time to help set up, park vehicles and sell t-shirts and concessions. We had over 30 cars show up even though it was only about 45 degrees out!

Jazz in the Meadows is Approaching!

The Rolling Meadows High School Music Boosters will present the 28th Annual Jazz in the Meadows Jazz Festival, on Saturday, February 23, 2013 Over 100 jazz bands representing 65 schools from five states will be participating in what is one of the largest and most highly regarded jazz gatherings in the Midwest. Beyond the actual participants, Jazz in the Meadows has become an event to be marked on the calendar for local jazz enthusiasts as well. The general public is welcome to attend and take in performances throughout the day and evening. While this is an educational event, guests will have the opportunity to listen to some of the top jazz bands and combos from Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Missouri. Many of the jazz bands and combos participate in the competitive portion of the event in an effort to achieve top honors in their specific categories and earn the opportunity to participate in the Grand Finale Concert at the end of the day.

In addition to the highest scoring bands, the Grand Finale Concert will include a performance by a special guest artist. This year’s artist is the BOB LARK ALUMNI BIG BAND directed by Bob Lark. It is an ensemble that is virtually a who’s who of Chicagoland jazz musicians and educators. There is also a Noontime Concert featuring a local guest artist. This year’s noontime artist is the NIA QUINTET, led by Scott Anderson. The competitive portion of the day will feature performances in four classes for high schools based on school size, a high school combo competition, a single class for junior high bands and a class specifically for “second bands” for high schools that support two levels. Each band will perform a fifteen-minute set followed by a period of evaluation and instruction on certain segments of the selections played. Feedback is presented to each performing group by a trio of jazz professionals and educators. Jazz in the Meadows draws on many colleges and universities in the Midwest to provide experienced educators on each panel. The 28th Annual Jazz in the Meadows will kick off at 8:00 a.m. with performances every half hour throughout the day in various locations in the school. The Noontime Concert will start at noon. The Grand Finale Concert is scheduled to begin at approximately 4:45 p.m. Tickets are available at the door, and come in several package options. A $10 adult ticket allows access to all performances throughout the day, including the Grand Finale Concert. Senior citizens and students can enjoy the all-access pass for just $7. A

family of up to four can purchase a full-day pass for $25. Tickets to just the Grand Finale Concert are priced at $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Breakfast, lunch and snack items will be available throughout the day at several locations throughout the building.

Rolling Meadows High School art students participated in the annual Harper Area High School Art Show. Students from Districts 214, 211 and 220 (Barrington) all exhibited 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional works of art. A reception and awards ceremony took place on Wednesday. November 28, 2012. In addition to our award winners, Art Faculty ar RMHS, Kevin Mueller, Martha Nava and Cathy Pach deserve big praise.

The Diviners, by Jim Leonard, Jr., is a beautiful, yet tragic play, that chronicles what happens when people forget to challenge their assumptions about all they believe. Though CC, the young confused preacher, is having a crisis of faith, he still believes in God, just not the way his father and grandfather define it. Strong characters who insist on doing things the way they always have been, end up inadvertently causing the tragedy, prompting thoughtful audience members to reflect on that which they hold “sacred”.

Set in the early days of the depression in a small southern Indiana town named Zion, Buddy Layman is a mentally-challenged boy whose sweet nature touches most people he meets. One day a stranger named C.C. Showers passes through Zion looking for work and food. C.C. takes an immediate liking to Buddy and vice versa. C.C. is able to relate to Buddy in ways that most people aren’t. The two become close friends and C.C. soon finds himself as Buddy’s mentor and teacher. Jennie Mae is attracted to C.C., and

though he likes her, Jennie Mae isn’t the only single girl near Zion that finds C.C. a catch of a man. The town’s dry goods owner has her eye set on bringing old fashioned revival to the community. The local diner owner would love to see the church rebuilt – and all the Sunday customers it would bring to her establishment. CC’s relationship with the people of the town changes drastically when they learned that he was a former preacher who has given up preaching. That knowledge changes everything and leads to a horrible tragedy.

The PTO Post Prom Committee is Looking for New Members!!

In previous years, the Post Prom Committee has provided the planning and financial support for the Post Prom activity. That activity is the cruise on Lake Michigan on the Spirit of Chicago. This event has been very popular and provides a safe and secure environment for all students. 90% of the students who attend Prom also attend the Post Prom. The event is organized and run by parent volunteers, and they are completely responsible for raising the funds for the Post Prom event.They need your help. Approximately 90% of the committee will be leaving due to student graduations, and they are in need of new volunteers. It’s important that these new volunteers become active now. It will allow them the opportunity to work side by side with the members who will be leaving. New volunteers are needed in order to continue to provide this great event for our students. Need a Little Help? Track and Field Team Offers Up Their Services to the CommunityAs in years past the Rolling Meadows Track and Field Team is offering up their services to the community as an opportunity to raise funds. As a team, we will spend the entire Saturday morning of the 20th of April within local neighborhoods providing our services. Our annual fund-raiser provides for equipment, uniforms, warm-ups, team-outings, and other financial obligations our team incurs.

Students in Mr. Caleb Parnin’s Poetry class collaborated with AP Studio Art students from Ms. Cathy Pach’s and Ms. Martha Nava’s classes to create works of art based upon poetry and poetry inspired by works of art. Students spent over a month discussing and analyzing each other’s work and the creating something new based upon it. In the Multimedia room, students assembled to share their creations with each other. It was a powerful presentation. We will be putting the work together in either a booklet form and/or a podcast format so that both pieces can be viewed/read together.
