HelenDempsey,PhDTitle:EarlyCareerCasualTeachers:NegotiatingprofessionalidentityinmultiplecommunitiesofpracticeSupervisors:A/ProfCarolineMansfieldandA/ProfJudyMacCallumHelen Dempsey has completed her PhD research focusing on early career casualteachers’negotiationandconstructionofprofessional identity, asprofessional identityhas been linked to teacher retention. Increasingly early career teachers begin theirworking lives employed as casual teachers, however there has been limited researchconductedwith this cohortof teachers.A longitudinal case studyapproachwasused,
beginningwithaseriesof focusgroupsfollowedby in-depthexplorationsof6 individuals, using interviewsandreflective tasks. This research found that professional identity was negotiated within personal, school andprofessional communities. Opportunities to develop relationships and engage with school and professionalcommunities contributed to a sense of belonging to the profession, whereas limited opportunities to provideevidenceofcompetencyofallAITSLStandardscontributedtoasensetheywereontheperipheryoftheteachingprofession. These opportunities varied depending on the regularity of employment, an ability tomake strongconnectionsatoneortwoschoolsandwhethertheytaughtout-of-field.Thisresearchhighlightedthecomplexityofthenegotiationandconstructionprocess.
