A Message of Thanks

I would first like to thank you as a Torreon Golf Club

Member for your fantastic support this year. The Club activity

was superb with all of our events very well attended. As the

General Manager I am pleased with the accomplishments of our

management staff and their teams.

Matt Kimball and his assistant Brandon Wilhelm have done

a remarkable job improving the condition of the golf courses.

The greens are exceptional and the contrast of the tall fescue

outlines the golf course in a dramatic fashion.

Steve Talentino is a magician in the golf shop. He and his team

are always professional and all of our tournaments and golfing

events have run smoothly.

Karen Meyer, Social and Events Director, developed the most successful Family Center Summer Program in the history

of Torreon. Karen also coordinated all Club events to include the creation of the themes and accents of festive décor.

Our Food & Beverage Director Frank Abeyta and Chef Eduardo Mata have been exceptional. The department really came

alive this year by preparing excellent cuisine and elevating the service level.

October and November are great months in the White Mountains. We welcome your weekend arrivals and your special

get-away weeks. We have created a new “Fall Menu” which is available every Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

The restaurant is open every day for lunch with breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. The bar is also open on the off-nights

(Monday – Wednesday) until the golfers finish.

This is certainly the time to begin planning your holiday gatherings. Be sure to keep us in mind as you plan your next party.

Torreon is now selling Golf Villas II packages which include a Golf Membership. You can contact Candi Williams, our

on-site real estate specialist with Sonoran Lifestyle Real Estate at 928 -537-8563. She is the lead sales executive for the

Golf Villas II duplexes.

There are many people who feel owning a home in Torreon individually is a major undertaking. We now offer the opportunity

for multiple families, who have their names on the title of the home, to purchase more than one membership per property.

This is a limited time offer, but while we have extra memberships we feel this is a great option.

Please contact me if you have any questions about the different membership promotions. We look forward to seeing you through

the winter months and don’t forget to make your reservations for Thanksgiving Day Brunch and the New Year’s Eve Party.

Warmest regards,

Joe Long, General Manager

Golf Course Maintenance

As the 2009 season starts to wind down, we are shifting our focus from daily prep work to special projects. There are drainage and canal clearing projects ahead as well as possible tee box construction. We plan to modify the fairway cut by softening the erratic outline and increasing the width of the fairways. We will slowly modify the rough to a more user friendly height so people won’t struggle as much recovering from the rough.

The asphalt on the Tower course will be redone to look like the 4th nine cart paths. The asphalt paths have not held up well with the clay base and the winter weather we

receive. We hope this program will look better, drive better and over time build a better base for future cart path paving. This project is scheduled for completion by spring 2010.

We are expanding our landscape work around the putting and chipping greens and the parking lots over the winter and into the spring. We’ve proposed the purchase of additional equipment for next spring. One of the pieces is a fairway aerifier. The use of an aerifier in the fairways coupled with sand topdressing will, over time, make the course much firmer, healthier, and able to recover from heavy rain events.

Our early spring project to renovate the main driving range tee will have a great impact on the golfing members. By applying herbicide to the tee, we will kill all the grass that currently inhabits the teeing area. Next, we will re-sod, sand, and fertilize the tee. The tee will remain closed until the grass has taken root and should open back up by mid-May. This will greatly reduce the amount of poa annua that has contaminated the tee and has spread to the putting surfaces.

As you can see, we will be busy this winter with an all-out effort to improve this wonderful facility. Thanks for all of the great suggestions and comments this season, we look forward to next season being even better.

Golf Season

Thank you for making this a great season at Torreon Golf Club!

We sincerely appreciate those of you who continually support the Club and take part in our golf activities. Participation in our golf events was very good and we look forward to building on our success. As always we appreciate your comments and suggestions. They are a valuable ingredient and a useful tool in developing our 2010 golf events schedule.

Our first major event of the season, the Member-Member was won by Brian Hughes and Jerry Calley. The Ladies Division was won by Debra Rogers and Janie Nolen.

Our premier mixed event was the Couples Extravaganza. The 2009 Champions were John and Janet Barton. The Junior Club Championship provided an exciting day of fun and competition for our growing number of junior golfers. The Boys Division was won by Caleb Ferganchick and in the Girls Division; Christine Johnson successfully defended her title.

The Men’s Member-Guest was once again a great success. The Overall Champions were Dennis Hawker and Quinton Smith. They played some awesome golf and their names are now etched on our perpetual trophy.

The Ladies Member-Guest was equally successful. The Gross Champions were Sue Basso and Donna Marden. The Net Division was won by Dee Dee McCabe and Marni Lucchini.

Congratulations to Hank Arnold and Sue Basso. They are the 2009 Overall Club Champions of Torreon Golf Club.

Also, we would like to congratulate Steve Anderson and Claudette Bonney, the Overall Net Champions. 2009 was the first year of a separate Senior Club Championship. The victors were Tim Bateman as the Senior Gross Champion and Butch Sorensen as the Net Champion.

The Tower and Cabin Golf Courses were in excellent condition all summer thanks to our Director of Agronomy Matt Kimball and Superintendent Brandon Wilhelm. Numerous compliments from members and guests added to enjoyment and success of our season. We look forward to a bright future regarding the condition, playability and acclaim of our golf facilities.

Soon, we will begin preparing our schedule of events for the year 2010. We plan to send out the 2010 Packet of Events shortly after the first of the year. Thank you for supporting our golf operations. It has been a great season at Torreon Golf Club and we look to next year.

Social Activities & Events

Thank you everyone for making the 2009 Family Center season the best ever. Our staff enjoys each and every one of your children. We’re already planning the program for next year’s fun. Our theme for the 2010 summer months will be “Around the World in 10 weeks.” Each week we’ll focus on a different country. All the activities from “Kiddy Camp” through the older kids will have food, games, and fun that takes place in that country. Be sure to look for the calendar on our website in early spring.

I want to remind you the Family Center will remain open on weekends this year as long as the golf course is open. We hope to see you in there!

Join us Thanksgiving weekend on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for special arts, crafts, and holiday season activities. We will also be open the entire Christmas break. New Year’s Eve will be fun, fun, fun. Please sign your children up early as space is limited. Our New Year’s Eve hours are until 12:30 am.

Remember to make your reservations for New Year’s Eve early. Torreon will be transformed into “Carnival”. You’ll experience a Fairy Court of jesters, clowns, great food, and the camaraderie of friends to welcome in the New Year!

I especially want to give a big Thank You to everyone who participated in this year’s activities. I have enjoyed meeting all of you and look forward to 2010.

Food & Beverage

I want to personally thank the members for a wonderful year at Torreon Golf Club. I have thoroughly enjoyed serving you as the Food and Beverage Director and look forward to the success and excitement 2010 has in store. Please put the Thanksgiving and New Year’s weekends on your calendar. Reservations are now being taken for the Thanksgiving buffet and we will have the New Year’s Eve Menu out shortly. Dates for holiday parties during the month of December are filling fast! If you would like to host a holiday party for your business or friends and family, please contact Karen Meyer at (928) 532-8000.

Currently we are working on expanding our Cabin food-service by providing BBQ from our smoker on a daily

basis. We will offer burgers and brats on the turn with steaks and other items prepared to your liking on Friday and Saturday Nights. We plan to offer pick-up and take home meals from the smoker as well.

We are always looking for opportunities to improve our efforts as we move into next season. Our goal is to make the dining experience for our members more convenient, pleasant, and relaxing. I believe that Torreon Golf Club can be a place where all members enjoy a dining experience that suits their expectations. As always, Chef Eduardo and I will strive to find creative, unique and friendly ways to cater to the dining requests of every family and individual.

I welcome any food and beverage questions or comments so feel free to contact me by email at [email protected] or by phone (928) 532-8000 ext 2205.

The summer golf season has wrapped up and we are on to our fall golf. This is a wonderful time to enjoy the club and a great time to get out and enjoy the last few rounds of golf for the season.
