SUNDAY SHOWCASE

The Cheshire Public Library’s Sun-day Showcase kicks off its Fall 2008 se-ries on Sunday, September 21 at 4:00 pm with a presentation of Music of the Gas Light Era. Musician and educator John Root presents this concert, featuring a diverse repertoire of instrumental and vocal musical styles from the turn of the previous century. The fall Sunday Showcase continues on October 26 with a guitar, flute and piano trio; on November 16 with the Three Finger Poi Hawaiian Dancers and Players; and on December 7 with the Jazz Arts Trio. All programs begin at 4:00 pm and are free. They are funded by the Friends of the Library.

GENEALOGY PROGRAMS Robert Locke, webmaster for Con-necticut Ancestry Society, Inc. will pre-sent Planting Your Family Tree Online, on Monday, November 10, at 7:00 pm. More genealogical records are being made available online every day, and distant relatives are connecting with each other through emails. Locke will demon-strate how publishing your own family tree on the Internet can bring connections from around the world. On Wednesday, November 12, at 7:00 pm, the program will be Jewish Ge-nealogy: Roots to the Past. Our present-ers are Marcia Indianer Meyers, President of both the Jewish Genealogical Society of Connecticut and the Friends of the Godfrey Memorial [Genealogy] Library, and Arthur Meyers, Director of Middle-town’s Russell Library. They have been active family history researchers for 20 years, using libraries and archives throughout the United States, Israel, England and Canada. Please register in advance, as seating is limited. To register, call the library at 272-2245, and press 4 for the Reference Desk.

NEW BOOK SERIES

FOR THE FALL Beginning Thursday, September 25, the Cheshire Public Library will host a new book discussion series sponsored by the Connecticut Humanities Council and funded by the Friends of the Cheshire Public Library. The series, entitled Food for Thought takes the reader through culinary journeys to provide insight into a profession that serves us all. Writer and independent scholar Brian Trent will lead the series. The first book in the series is Ruth Reichl’s Garlic and Sapphires, her deli-cious new memoir recounting her “adventures in deception” as she goes undercover in the world’s finest restau-rants as the New York Times’ restaurant critic. The discussion will take place Thursday, September 25 at 7:00 pm and is free and open to all, but pre-registration is necessary. Please call the library at 272-2245 to register. Multiple copies of the book are available at the library. The series continues on October 30 with the title Julie and Julia, presenting us with a very unique coming of age ex-perience and a young woman’s struggle to find who she wants to be. November 13 brings us the autobi-ography of the world’s first famous TV Chef, My Life In France by Julia Child. The series concludes on December 4 with a look behind the scenes of The Wife of a Chef, clearly illustrating that owning a restaurant is hard work, not glamour. Copies of all the titles are available for loan at the library.

September is Library Card Sign-up Month. Make sure your children have their cards up-to-date and ready for school projects . The library has resumed Saturday hours, 9:30 am - 5:00 pm Congratulations to staff member Sharon Tyler and husband on the birth of their sec-ond child, a daughter. The Library will be open winter Sunday afternoons again, 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm, from January 4 through March 22. Cheshire resident Christine Vassar Tall recently donated a copy of her book London War Letters of a Separated Family 1940-1945 to the library. Mrs. Tall was evacuated from London to Poughkeepsie, New York, as a child at the start of World War II. Before you drop off book donations to the library, the Friends suggest you check to see if they are CLEAN, ODOR FREE, CUR-RENT, and IN GOOD CONDITION. Books that are not cannot be accepted.

Email reminders that library materials are soon due are offered to patrons as a courtesy. Noureen Hakim, Head of Circulation, sug-gests that you hold on to all receipts as offi-cial records of due dates. Cheshire Garden Club designated the Library Beauty Spot of the Month for August.

1000th Rotary Birthday Book Donated

With the recent pur-chase of the American Horticultural Society Encyclopedia of Per-ennials, the Rotary Birthday Book Pro-gram has reached a landmark - 1000 books have been do-nated to the Library in recognition of Chesh-ire Rotarians on their birthdays.

Conceived by Rotarian Richard H. Miller, the program was initiated in 1981. Members of the Rotary Club contribute the funds for the books. They submit a form to library staff indi-cating their hobbies and vocations. Based on these interests, a book or two will be purchased for the Rotarian on his/her birthday. Each month letters are sent to the Rotary Club an-nouncing the books that have been acquired in honor of the Rotarians celebrating birthdays in that month. The honor of having the 1000th birthday book was bestowed on Howard Baldwin. A Rotary member since 2004, Mr. Baldwin is in the communications business and his interests, besides gardening, are computers, sales and sports. Happy Birthday Howard!
