AcademicCourseLevels
TheacademicprogramofSt.MichaelCatholicHighSchoolseekstoprovidecourseworkwhich challengesstudentsfromabroadrangeoftalentsandareasofstrength.Asacollegepreparatory school,alllevelsaredesignedtopreparestudentsforcollege;thereisnoremedialtrack.Coursework isofferedatseverallevelsofchallenge:CollegiateStudies,HonorsandAdvancedPlacement(A.P.) CollegiateStudies–Courseworkatthislevelrequiresavarietyofstudyskillsandlearninghabits. Independenceincompletingdailyassignments,accomplishingindividualprojectsandunderstanding themajorconceptsofcontentisexpected.Studentsmustdisplaysufficientmotivationtocomplete tasks.Competentperformanceateachlevelofthecriticalthinkinghierarchywillbestrengthenedin ordertoensurethatstudentsarewellpreparedtomeettheacademicdemandsofcollege. AdmissionPolicy
Whenevaluatingapplicants,theadmissionsofficeseeksstudentswhohavetheprerequisiteskillsto succeedinacollegepreparatoryprogram,whichisdeterminedbyanassessmentofthestudent’s prioracademicrecord,aplacementtestandapersonalinterviewforthosestudentscomingtoSt. MichaelfromoutsidetheCatholicschoolsystem.
WeanticipateadiversityofacademicaptitudesatSt.Michael,reflectiveofthediversityofBaldwin CountyCatholicfamilies.Becauseourfirstresponsibilityistoservethesefamilies,theyaregiven preferenceinadmissions,butwewelcomestudentsandfamiliesofallChristianfaiths,unitedaswe areinservicetothegospelofJesusChrist,aswellasthosefromotherreligioustraditions.
Wealsoinvitetransfersofhighlycapablestudentsinto10thor11thgrade.Asageneralrule,wedo notacceptin-towntransfersintoSt.Michaelforastudent'ssenioryear.Ifachildstruggles academically,itisimportantthatheorsheappliestoSt.Michaelasafreshman,asthefreshmanyear programestablishesthefoundationforupperlevelsuccess.Therearenoremedialclassesortracks atSt.Michaeltohelpupperclassmenclosegapsintheirpreviouslearning,andforthatreasonthe admissionsstandardsforstudentsswitchingschoolsismorechallenging.
Intheeventwereceivemoreapplicationsthanwehaveavailableopenings(aswedidforthe incomingfreshmanclassof2018),prioritiesforadmissionareasfollows:

StudentswillhavetheopportunitytotakeandanalyzemultipleACTpracticetestsandtestexcerpts. Grammarandvocabularypracticespecifictothetestswillbecovered.Studentswilllearnspecialized andresearch-provennote-takingstrategiestoassisttheminoverallperformanceinothercourses. Studentswillhavetheabilitytoimprovetheirstrength,conditioning,speed,andagilitythrougha varietyofdifferentactivities,whilealsoimprovingtheirself-disciplineandleadershipskills. DRIVEREDUCATION(9thor10th)-NoCredit/IncludedinPE IncorporatedintotheFitnessTrainingorStrengthandConditioningcourse,thisoptionalcourseisa 2phasecourseconsistingofclassroominstructionandBehindTheWheel(BTW)instruction.The classroomphaseofthecourseconsistsofinstructioninsafedrivingtechniques,theeffectsof alcohol,drugs,andfatigueonsafedriving,vehiclemaintenanceandinsurance,aswellasmap reading.StudentswillalsoreceiveinstructioninBoatingBasicswiththeopportunitytoearna BoatingLicense.TheBehindTheWheelphaseofthecourseisthepracticalapplicationofthe course.ALearner'sLicenseisrequired.9thstudentsmustturn15byNovember1st.Studentsthat successfullycompletethecoursewillearntheir“BlueCard”whichqualifiesthatstudentfortheir driverslicense.
