Abstract
This cross-sectional research was aimed to investigate factors related to occupational stress among
registered nurses in the autonomous university hospitals. Three hundred and seventy-six registered nurses
were selected by cluster sampling. Data were collected by questionnaires and analyzed in terms of
frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, minimums, maximums, Pearson correlation and Chi
square test. The findings showed that 74.5 % was female. Mean age was 33.97 years old. 63.6 % wasmarried. 95.7 % had a bachelor's degree or equivalent. 38.6 % had insufficient income and was in dept.
39.1 % had professional experience in nursing of less than 5 years. 65.7% worked in shift (morning,
afternoon, and evening shift) 46.1 % worked on the average of 11.53 hours / day. 46.1 % worked without
weekly holidays. 83.2 % reported that the magnitude of impact from autonomous administration on the
job was moderate. 76.1 % had a moderate occupational stress. Factors related to occupational stress
were insufficient income from the regular job, and the change to autonomous administration of the
organization. It is suggested that the autonomous university hospitals administrators should pay special
attention to the nurses salary and rewards. Correct understanding of changes of the organization
management system should also be instructed.
