FUEL INJECTION SYSTEMQ: Is the TITAN EXP Fuel Injection System certificated?A: No. The TITAN EXP Fuel Injection System is not certificated at the present time. It is eligible for experimental aircraft.
Q: Does ECi intend to certificate the system?A: The answer to that question will be determined by market demand.
Q: Is the system compatible with unleaded gas? A: Yes. However, the owner/operator must determine the compatibility of unleaded fuels with the requirements of the engine and installation. The materials in the valves, valve seats and valve guides of the ECi TITAN KitEngine cylinders require the use of 100LL aviation fuel for initial break-in, approximately the first 25 hours of engine operation. ECi does NOT recommend the use of current unleaded fuel in any engine having a compression ratio in excess of 8.5:1, in any engine subject to operation in excess of rated RPM nor in engines that are supercharged.
Q: Can the TITAN EXP Fuel Injection System be overhauled in the field? A: Yes. Overhaul data and competitively priced replacement parts will be available. In addition, a Calibration Kit is available from ECi.
Q: Will all TITAN KitEngines come equipped with the TITAN EXP Fuel Injection System? A: No. This will be a kit option.
Q: What type of pump does the system use? A: A mechanically driven vane type fuel pump that operates at pressures up to 30 psi. The pump attaches to the accessory housing by means of an AN pad and is gear driven.
Q: Are the vane type fuel pump and the automotive diaphragm type fuel pump interchangeable on the same accessory case? A: No, but soon you will be able to mount the fuel pump on the vacuum pump pad on those aircraft not using a vacuum pump.
Q: What happens if the pump fails? A: The mechanical system is backed up by an electrically driven boost pump for engine starting and emergencies.
Q: Does it make any difference if the airplane has a high wing or a low wing? A: No.
Q: How does the return fuel line work? A: The outgoing and the return fuel lines are routed as a pair and are simultaneously controlled by a fuel selector valve manufactured by Andair Ltd. When the fuel selector valve is turned to the desired tank, fuel is taken from the tank and the excess fuel is returned to the same tank.
Q: Will the TITAN EXP Fuel Injection System only work with the TITAN EXP Cold Induction System? A: No. TITAN EXP Fuel Injection System will work with any induction system currently on the market but enhances engine performance the most when used in conjunction with the TITAN EXP Cold Induction System.

The TITAN EXP FIS kit components include: fuel pump and vapor separator assembly; throttle body; injector nozzles; fuel manifold valve includes fittings and bracket; fuel lines; complete installation and adjustment instructions.
Check Valves allow fuel to flow in one direction only. Check valves are
installed in the vapor return system and in the fuel supply system.
A module is installed in the cockpitthat contains the fuel boost pump, selector valve, fuel filter, and installation hardware. The basic components (the duplex fuel selector valve must be purchased seperately) can be purchased in kit form from Vans1, i.e. 7/7A F.I. Pump (18 psi min.) Install which fits the RV 6/6A, 7/7A, and 9/9A. A duplex valve must be substituted for the single valve with additional plumbing added to accommodate the vapor return lines.
Fuel Injection System
The Fuel Selector primary function is to allow selection or shut-off of either main fuel tank The secondary purpose is to return vapor to the same tank which the system is drawing fuel from (fuel feed - top valve; vapor return - bottom valve). This function was developed so that any one tank cannot be overfilled.
Manifold Valve continuously supplies even fuel distribution to all fuel injector nozzles and provides metering functions. It also provides fuel cut-off between the injectors and the
throttle body during engine shutdown. Throttle Body is the unit
which meters air and fuel in relation proportion to the throttle position. Secondary function is idle speed and idle mixture adjustment.
Injector Nozzles meter fuel and allow air to mix with fuel to improve atomization and vaporization while injecting fuel directly into cylinder intake ports. The injectors consist of calibrated orifice, screen shield, screen, and a nozzle body.
ProsExcellent fuel metering, distribution, atomization and vaporization Carb heat provision not required No requirement to pass induction air through oil sump to improve fuel distribution and vaporizationSmoother running engine due to better fuel distributionAllows fuel/air mixture to be optimized for each cylinderWorks in any aircraft attitudeThrottle body can be mounted in any position available on the engineCan be installed to take advantage of ram airAllows engine to be leaned more precisely thereby improving fuel economyMore HP for the same amount of fuelSpark plugs remain cleaner and therefore, live longerWorks in supercharged applicationsThe same basic system works on engines of different displacementsWorks on any induction system in the marketProper fuel flow and operation are validated during bench testsDirect injection into the intake port cools the intake valve1-1/2 to 2 manifold pressure advantage over a carburetor or servo system. (Due to lack of a venturi in the inlet air passage.)a) 1 of manifold pressure equates to 2 to 3% horsepower.b) 1 of manifold pressure equates to approximately 1000 of critical altitude.c) 1000 of altitude with the same HP equals 2.5 +kts.
Fuel Pump/Vapor Separator supplies fuel to the injection system and performs part of the metering functions. It increases fuel flow with engine RPM at a 1:1 ratio. The injection pump has a vapor return function to reduce possibility of vapor lock at high altitudes or high temperatures, provides idle fuel
pressure adjustment, full throttle fuel pressure adjustment, and mixture control through the whole range of operation.
