You will need to be able to define the concepts - the first question(for 2 marks) in each religion asks for a definition of a concept. You willalso be expected to use the concepts in answers to other questions,to show that you know and understand them. The concepts unlock thecontent of the themes within the study of Judaism, helping to explainreligious teachings and practices, and also the varying views andopinions that believers within Judaism may have.

Exam tipThe link between beliefs/teachings and practices

Although the chapter is divided into two sections there are manyconnections between the beliefs and teachings of Jews and thepractices they observe. For example, because of belief in God asCreator, many Jews practise the keeping of Shabbat each week. Thereare also many connections between beliefs and teachings, and themesin the religious, philosophical and ethical studies component: Issuesof life and death, Issues of good and evil, Issues of relationshipsand Issues of human rights. Reference to relevant beliefs, texts andpractices will be credited wherever they appear in your answers.

Differences matterIn your exam you will be expected to refer to the different attitudes andpractices between Orthodox and Reform Jews. The table on page 32 willhelp you remember why there are different views and practices held bypeople who follow the same religion.

Key conceptsOrthodox is a major branch of Judaism whichadheres faithfully to the principles and practicesof traditional Judaism. Orthodox Jews believethat the Law of the Torah is eternal andunchanging, and they practise observance of theSabbath, religious festivals, holy days and thedietary laws.

Reform is a major branch of Judaism which seeksto embrace a diversity of interpretations of Jewishlaw and customs whilst preserving the beliefs,values and traditions central to the faith. ReformJews believe that Jewish law is inspired by Godand people can choose which laws to follow.
