October 2015
Dear Parents,
Last year, 23 students completed Falcon Feather #7, Teamwork. It is the
most complex of the Falcon Feathers. This leadership principle develops the
habit of synergy. It directs students to discover that working as a team is
rewarding and effective. Students’ pictures and projects are posted in the
main hallway. Next time you’re in the building, take a look at how our mid-
dle school students served the community and learned about teamwork
along the way.
7th graders are encouraged to earn Falcon Feathers #5 and #6 in order to be
eligible next year for 8th grade leadership positions. Our 6th graders have
eagerly jumped into the Falcon Feather program. Already, many have
turned in their first Falcon Feather. Many of our students were successful
last year and we look forward to seeing all of them grow this year.
A class of 8th grade students are organizing, managing, celebrating and pro-
moting the Falcon Feather awards. Students may turn in Falcon Feather
worksheets any Friday to their core teacher. The ‘Leadership Class’ then
awards the Falcon Feather, a colored dog tag, on the next late start day. In
addition, they place a recognition sheet on the student’s locker. In Decem-
ber they will hold a celebration during the school day for all 6th graders who
earned at least one Falcon Feather.
Our annual Magazine Sale ended recently and was a success. Almost fifty
percent of this will be profit for the school which will be used for our stu-
dents. This positive support of our school in hard economic times sends a
strong message. The Euclid community supports our students and school. It
is an honor to serve at a school that has such strong parental involvement.
Thank you.
It has been a great start to the year as I see our students jumping into all that
our school community has to offer. We have a fun and challenging year
ahead of us.
Sincerely,
Gary Hein Principal

PARENT CONFERENCES
All School Conferences:
These conferences are regularly held in October and
February. These are times for parents to meet teachers in
order to discuss student successes and concerns. There
are two formats for all school conferences.
Scheduled: These pre-scheduled conferences are 20
minute time periods in which a teacher or parents can
make an appointment to conference together. These
conferences tend to focus on students who are struggling
academically.
Arena: Arena Conferences offer the opportunity for
parents to meet with teachers for ten-minute conferences
without an appointment. This enables parents to
conference with any or all of their students' teachers in a
short period of time. During this time period, all Euclid
staff will be in various designated areas in the school
according to grade and exploratory/elective area. These
conferences are on a first-come, first-served basis.

Parents are welcome to request a conference with a
teacher(s) at any time during the school year. This type
of informal conference can be arranged by calling the
counselor who works with your student's core. The
counselor will coordinate and schedule the conference in
a timely manner. Parents can also call a teacher(s)
directly and schedule an appointment.
EUCLID'S GRADE REPORTING SYSTEM
This year our grading process will continue on a nine-
week basis. This nine-week grade report will reflect
"Grades in Progress." This means that the student does
not receive final grades until the end of each semester.
The first nine-week "in progress grades" will appear on
the first grade report. The second nine- week grade
report will show the final grades for the first semester of
the school year. Grades in progress are currently
available for parents and students to view on Infinite
Campus Portal.
In an effort to keep parents informed, those students not
working at a satisfactory level (D or F) or those students
who have shown a recent, significant change in grades
and/or effort would have received a formal Mid-Quarter
Academic Report the week of September14, 2015. The
first nine week grading period will end on October 16,
2015. Please call your grade level counselor if you have
questions.
COUNSELING GROUPS

National History Day By Anna Sutterer
For Sabrina Ehrnstein, Eva Grenawalt, Sofie Martinez
and Makenzie McKenna — eighth-grade graduates of
Euclid Middle School — history has taken on new
meaning since competing in the National
History Day contest this year.
Ehrnstein can tell you about Albert Ein-
stein and his Jewish culture, a bit about his
theories and how he advocated for civil
rights. She does all this with a German ac-
cent.
Grenawalt’s website on journalists Robert
Woodward and Carl Bernstein, whose re-
porting toppled President Richard Nixon
from power, is an interactive multimedia
compilation focused on truth.
And Martinez and McKenna reveal the
lasting effects of newspaperman Joseph
Pulitzer’s reforms through their role-play
as newsboys and reporters.
