We’re galloping into 2011
…and saving energy, too!
Worthing Business Circle is a group of local businesses who get together every week to network, exchange leads and share recommendations. The Circle has been going for over six years and we have around 25 members, each representing a different business category. Meetings are relaxed and informal, with the focus on building relationships, while sharing our ideas and experiences.
We meet on Wednesday mornings for breakfast between 7 and 8.45am at Hill Barn Golf Club, Worthing. Once every quarter, we replace the breakfast meeting with an early evening social event.
Membership costs are less than you may think and, as a member, you’re free to attend as many meetings as you choose.
If you would like to join the Circle, or you’d like to attend one of our meetings as a guest to see if the Circle is for you, contact us at [email protected] or speak to any of our members that you may know. A list of our members can be found on our website: www.worthingbusinesscircle.co.uk
Will you be joining us for breakfast in the New Year?

proceedings that I finally twigged. The LA was missing from the
beginning, and the S from the end. Simples!
I’m making a firm resolution to be as clear as possible with
everyone this year – in emails, texts,
conversation, the lot. Let’s hope I can
keep this up for a while, before
bits start dropping off.
App New Ear!
As we stride forward into 2011, the
keyword is communication. It’s never been
easier to make contact with the world
– with texts, emails, tweets and blogs
zooming continually through cyberspace.
But despite the twittering frenzy in this
millennium’s second decade, I’m struck
by the need for completeness in the way
we communicate, and by how easy it is to
misunderstand what’s going on.
Messages with bits missing are so confusing, aren’t they? Try
covering up the lower half of a line of print, and you’ll be able
to read it fairly well. But cover the top half and try to read the
bottom? It’s well nigh impossible.
The other week I visited the loo in a well-known local restaurant,
and discovered a door marked DIE. I kind of gathered it wasn’t a
request to end my life, so could it be another language, perhaps
– one I was unfamiliar with? ‘Die’ is Latin for ‘day’ or perhaps
German for ‘the’? No, neither of those work too well. French,
Arabic? No – give up. As the door on the opposite side of the
corridor was clearly marked GENTLEMEN, I took a chance and
went into DIE. It wasn’t until I was at the hand-drying stage of the

7Essential New Year
Energy has become such a buzz
word these days, and most of
what we hear is not great news.
Energy costs are rising and
there seems to be no end to the
rises in sight.
Furthermore, for those
people relying on an income
from their investments to pay
their bills, there is little good
news either, with interest rates
at an all time low.
Fortunately it’s not all bad
news. In fact, there’s some
Clean, green and thriftyincredibly bright news when
you have Solar panels installed.
Just take a look at what the
feed in tariffs can do for you.
You may have heard about
the Feed in Tariff or FiTs in
the national press, and you
may have thought it all sounds
too good to be true, or there
must be a catch. Well, this
time there is no catch, and it’s
all good news.
The Government has to
find ways of generating Clean
Green energy, and it can’t do
it all on its own. So in April
this year they introduced an
incentive to encourage people
like you to do it for them. This
is the Feed in Tariff. It’s nothing
new and has been running in
other parts of Europe for years.
And now, in the UK, we’re
finally catching up.
If you have Solar panels fitted
on your property, normally
on the roof, (although some
people have them mounted
on a frame on the ground),
you will be paid around four
times what you currently pay
for your electricity, whether
you use it or send it back to the
grid for someone else to use!
What’s more, there are further
payments for the surplus power
that goes back to the grid, and
you’ll save on your current bill,
as you now won’t need to buy
as much.
In the UK we have a very
generous Feed in Tariff rate,
but it won’t last for ever. The
rate will decrease in 2012 for
those who have not signed
up by then. So don’t miss this
opportunity – act now.
The future’s looking brighter, says Simon Lovering at Eco Innovations

8 Essential Energy
Heating our homes and our
water is the biggest energy cost
households face each month.
Household energy consumption
this winter may be higher than
ever and, to make matters
worse, utility companies have
announced significant price
rises – in most cases more than
double the rate of inflation.
However, many homeowners
do not realise that a well-
maintained boiler will burn
less fuel, so having your boiler
checked and your heating
system serviced will not only
It’s 12 months since Cartridge World opened at 28 Goring Road, during the worst winter for some years. But the snow didn’t stop Graham and Tracy opening their doors.
“We were due to open on January 9,” says Graham, “but snow held up deliveries. We didn’t receive our stock until Friday January 8, but opened on time as planned”.
They’d like to thank their customers for their business and continued support during 2010 and wish them all a happy 2011.
Consumers are beginning to look at alternative ink and laser cartridges, for both cost and quality. The price of original cartridges continues to increase while cartridges become smaller, holding less ink and toner.
Cartridge World, franchising over 1600 stores worldwide, are the biggest re-filler on the High Street. They guarantee products, and use materials of the highest quality.
Reduce, Re-use, RecycleCartridge World Goring celebrates its first birthday
Refills help the consumer deal with used original cartridges, as Cartridge World only uses original cartridges and not compatibles, which is a different product altogether.
With this in mind, Cartridge World Goring and Littlehampton are offering to purchase any empty original printhead cartridges (HP, Lexmark, Canon and some Dell) for £1.00 per working cartridge. You can watch these being electrically tested at the store and, if they pass the test, payment will be made.

save money and energy, it could
avoid a potential tragedy.
Gas is the most commonly
used fuel for home heating
systems across the country
and, although in principle
it is completely safe, lack of
routine maintenance means
that around 50 people still
needlessly die every year from
preventable gas-related carbon
monoxide poisoning.
If your boiler is more than
ten years old or has been
infrequently serviced in the
past, it’s vital to contact a Gas
Safe registered engineer to
inspect the system.

Now the festive season is
over, you’ll probably find

is – you can recycle them all,

you need to do is leave your

An unexpired lease term of less
than 80 years on a residential
flat is considered to be short
and can affect saleability, says
Julian Wilkins
What’s more, an unexpired
term of less than 70 years
makes the flat unmortgageable
with many mainstream lenders.
Faced with such problems many
leaseholders approach their
freeholders for lease extensions
and, not knowing they can
challenge the terms offered,
agree to the freeholder’s offer.
However, leaseholders
have rights under the 1993
Leasehold Reform, Housing &
Urban Development Act which
gives them the legal right to a
statutory lease extension. This
statutory lease extension gives
leaseholders a 90 year extension

the extinguishment of any

and the right to have the

Leasehold Valuation Tribunal, if
this cannot be agreed.
Such terms are far better
than those normally offered

leaseholders are advised to seek

Challenge us to invest in the futureThe retirement of a long-standing member in 2011 creates a vacancy for a volunteer governor on our Board. If you have the experience to widen our perspective - with skills that complement the existing strengths of our Board in overseeing the quality of the college’s provision and its place at the heart of the community - then we would love to hear from you.
We are specifically seeking a qualified accountant with suitable experience for this role. You will act as a ‘critical friend’ who will challenge and support the college to sustain its sound financial health and its investment in the future throughout turbulent times for the public sector.
We strongly encourage applications from all sections of the community, so that we can reflect its diversity.
Our Board’s Annual Open Meeting is Thursday 27th January 2011. Come along to see us in action and receive a copy of our Annual Report.

Northbrook College – investing in the futureThis is the time of the year when
we make resolutions for the future, and perhaps take on something new. Here’s an activity that you, or someone you know, might consider.
Northbrook College, with sites at West Durrington and Broadwater in Worthing, and also in Shoreham, serves the local community. The college equips young people with the skills and knowledge they will need – and also helps those seeking a new direction in their lives.
Northbrook’s Governing Body is a group of volunteers, drawn from the community and sharing a common desire to improve the education of learners of all ages. The college has occasional vacancies for governors. They are unpaid, but by no means amateur. It is important that together they have a wide range of skills
and experience. For example, the college will soon be looking, quite specifically, for a volunteer qualified accountant to join its Board. The position might suit a recently-retired professional, or someone looking to widen their current portfolio and add a valuable, and highly-respected, episode to their CV. The time commitment is not huge. Meetings, typically two or three each term, take place on a weekday evening.
These are turbulent times for education and for the public sector. The measures put in place to make further savings are already taking effect. One area where we all have a stake in maintaining standards – and improving things for the future – is education.
Interested? To find out how to take the next step, see Northbrook’s advertisement below.

Shed those kilos on the VibrogymGyms can be fun, but making a yearly – or even, in some cases – a three-yearly commitment isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. If you’d rather pay as you go, and exercise with your own personal trainer for a very similar cost, why not check out the Vibrogym at Power Coach? There are branches in Goring and Rustington, where you can experience whole body vibration training. A 20 minute session on the Vibrogym is the equivalent of 90 minutes in a regular gym – and as it’s non-impact, the programme is suitable for all ages and abilities.
This highly sophisticated equipment will help you shed those extra kilos without the sweat – but you will need to change your bad lifestyle habits for better ones.
Get along to Power Coach if you want people to see less of you!

The choice is yoursIf you’re looking for care or care services for a loved one, it’s easy to find yourself feeling confused. Not enough information, conflicting advice, or coming to a dead end over all kinds of issues can leave you uncertain about which way to turn. You could find yourself asking: “What care services do I need and where can I access them?”
“What are my options?”“Who funds care? And what
exactly is available?” Government policy states that
local authorities are responsible for providing or arranging for care and care services for older people in their own homes. Local authorities will even pay via schemes or funding streams, called Direct Payments, with

individual budgets to enable people to buy in and pay for their own care needs.
You do have a choice – of care homes, sheltered housing, extra care housing, warden assisted accommodation, as well as accessing care at home. However, some of these payments or grants may not be used to pay towards long term care fees in care homes! Always ask for – and take advice from your family solicitor, as some options may be more suitable than others. It’s important to think about the long term effects of any commitment.
My wife Sally and I have been providing residential care in Worthing for over 30 years at Heaton and Highgrove
Houses, and are willing to help guide you through the maze of red tape, providing you with the right information. And the letters we receive from
the families of our residents just speak for themselves.
“You helped us through those difficult first weeks and months, and we’ll always be grateful to Sally. Our mother deserved the best, and Heaton House gave her the best.”
“Our sister could not have been better cared for anywhere. She is so happy with you.”

17Essential Directory
LEO (July 24 – Aug 23)You’ve always been devoted to your friends, and very firmly on their side. The flip side of this strong, positive attitude is that, when it comes to love, you sometimes have trouble taking ‘no’ for an answer. If you know you’re heading for this kind of scenario, the message is – tread gently and don’t come on too strong.
VIRGO (Aug 24 – Sept 23)Your personal confidence and self esteem may have taken a bit of a knock recently, and you may be feeling too dependent on a particular person in your life. Don’t waste energy on trying to change this – it’s a phase you can’t avoid, and is only temporary. Take note of exactly what makes you feel uncomfortable, and in a month or so you’ll be able to shift the power balance more
firmly in your favour.
LIBRA (Sept 24 – Oct 23)No-one can tell you anything about social success, because handling people is, and always has been, your absolute forte. And as the month progresses, the fun begins in earnest, with plenty of opportunity to shine. But don’t force the issue. Just make sure all this brilliance isn’t too blinding
for those around you.
SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 22)Your positive attitude to money matters means increased prosperity in the New Year. Finances are suddenly very exciting and very good. Your appetite for risk has been strong for a few months now – and you’ve been looking at certain investments as a bit of an adventure. It’s all very appealing – providing you keep that Sensible Hat on, and don’t get too carried away.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23 – Dec 21)Personal merit is top of the leader board, and all you need to get you what you want this month is a strong dose of initiative. Focus on your emotional life, too. Your family deserve some of your time – so make sure you get to the school football match, take your partner to dinner or have a chat with granny about the olden days. It’s a vital part of your life’s patchwork, and should not be neglected.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 20)You’re at the top of your game as the New Year unfolds, and are probably enjoying a strong leadership role. But beware – because you’re more prominent than usual, this could make you a natural target for someone’s envy or displeasure. If you do find yourself in a difficult situation, here’s a crumb of comfort – you’re taking all this flak precisely because you’re right there in the Success Zone.
AQUARIUS(Jan 21 – Feb 19)Congratulations! You’re beginning the year with a seriously positive outlook, and your desire for true independence is strong. Now’s the time to take the bull by the horns and create the best working conditions to suit you. This doesn’t mean riding roughshod over colleagues – just by taking a clear, firm approach you’ll be more than able to get things done.
PISCES (Feb 20 – March 20)As the year begins your career ambitions are right up there in the top slot. Pay rises, promotions and new challenges at work are all highly possible – and there’s extra support from your family to give you a warm feeling about it all. Finances are beginning to look up, and you could see a considerable boost in prosperity over the next couple of months.
ARIES (March 21 – April 20)Your love life hits a bit of an iceberg this month – but there’s no need for it to sink without trace as a result. Your beloved may be feeling a tad neglected, so make time for some romantic conversation and a little TLC. Plan a trip together, or book a new course you can do as a couple – and by the middle of the month you’ll definitely be sailing in calmer waters.
TAURUS (April 21 – May 21)You’ve always been a deep thinker, and you’re certainly beginning the year in a philosophical frame of mind. Make time to enjoy a really good discussion with an intelligent friend, and if you’re a student, get that work plan well and truly sorted for the new term. If you’re involved with charities or other good causes, you’ll find great satisfaction in doing
something positive to help others.
GEMINI (May 22 – June 21)Socially, this is a great month for you – chiefly because you’re extremely popular with friends these days. And you know why that is, don’t you? You’ve finally made a conscious decision to put their interests above your own – and you’re now reaping the rewards. If you’re feeling shy about a developing relationship – have courage and move forward.
Fearlessness in love should be your New Year goal.
CANCER (June 22 – July 23)January is set to be a hectic month, with plenty of change on the not-too-distant horizon, and plenty of crises to keep you on your toes. Just hang on in there, handle each issue as it presents itself, avoid excess anxiety (if you possibly can) and all should work out very neatly. Be prepared for a bit of drudgery, too. And smile! Hard work can produce good fortune.
A fun, friendly look at what’s in the stars for you in the New Year

Dr Sarah has the last word…
It’s January. It’s grim, cold, dark, poor and miserable. Advice abounds about becoming a better, more virtuous being at this time of year. You don’t need me to tell you to get off the sofa, put down the mini pork pies and tin of choccies, stop drinking, smoking, go to the gym, eat more veg and do some charity work, (which, incidentally, you should).
I’m going to make a break for it, avoid the subject of ill-fated New Year’s Resolutions altogether and instead plump for a gratuitously funny story. After all, who doesn’t like a tale of an elderly gent and a glass dildo?
If you are of a sensitive or prudish disposition (that’s you, mum), not sure what a dildo is, glass or otherwise (er, mum?) or you are a close friend or colleague – you will have heard this a few times already. Now would be a good time to look away and ponder some self-improvements.
An elegant older chap walked nervously into the consulting room in a smart charcoal-grey suit, looking every bit the retired accountant. He paced uncomfortably, reluctant to take the seat I offered, and spilled his unfortunate tale. His notes detailed ‘?FB (foreign body) in rectum.’ Excellent.
He took the time to explain how, being troubled by piles, he had taken the advice of a benign old lady from his church who had kindly suggested a remedy. You may imagine, dear Reader, that in the course of my work I am often told a ‘variant’ of the truth, especially when it comes to objects being far from their natural habitat. I’d like to think that I’m generally quite good at spotting a yarn. However, as the story unravelled, my mind was still searching for an innocent (albeit unlikely) explanation. Had his grip on the Anusol tube slipped? It’s easily done…
Inevitably I had to examine him and I began to suspect there was more to my accountant than I had fathomed. As the staid suit fell away, it revealed a pair of bright green lycra cycling shorts and beneath that, a red lacy
leotard with poppers at the crotch. Imagine my surprise.
I pride myself on keeping a professional manner in the most trying of circumstances but I will freely admit, I was sorely tested. On more intimate examination, I felt the unmistakable contours of a glass marital aid. I must say at this point that I consider it a significant design fault of this kind of equipment that it does not have any kind of handle. As anyone who has ever used a suppository will know, any object inserted far enough in to the rectum will be sucked up, whoosh! You can push all you like – it’s not coming out again.
My poor chap had to go to theatre and have it removed under anaesthetic.
So along with Resolutions for a more worthy New Year, perhaps you would also like to make a mental note of the above cautionary tale and choose an improving evening class, lest you be left at home alone with too much time on your hands.
A Happy and Healthy New Year to you!

Bringing up the rearWarning! Dr Sarah’s column is NOT for the faint-hearted
A new year and a fresh look! Now that 2011 is upon us, and you undoubtedly plan to make this year better than last, it’s time to take a step back and look at your business from a different angle. Time to devise your plan to make real progress over these next 12 months.
It’s a proven fact that those who increase their marketing effort during bad economic times come out the other side stronger and with a larger share of the market. So, make that promise to yourself, get together all your marketing collateral, place it on the table next to your laptop or computer screen with your website on it and ask yourself these questions: • Does my website look old?• Does my logo and brand
image reflect what I am trying to achieve?
• Is my brand look and feel consistent?
• How drab is my business stationery?
While it’s very easy to say, “My logo, materials and website do the job,” this may not be what your customers think. It’s possible that your printed material is looking a little drab, your logo doesn’t reflect the strides you’ve made since it was created, and if
your site is over three years old it’s likely to be missing some key elements of modern web design and features which can improve the experience for your customers.
So – make 2011 the year where you refresh your look and feel, develop your brand, enhance your current logo, update your website, explore social media, get out networking, enhance customer relations and grow your business.
