VocabularyThevocabularylistinAppendix5eisapproximately100words,plusseveralbasicprepositionalphases.The vocabulary has been selected with reference to thecommonlyusedlanguagecoursesforthislevel.Almostallthewordsinthevocabularylistalsoappear
atGCSE(9–1)levelandsoEntryLevelprovidesasoundbasisforprogression.Itisnotexpectedthatcandidates should know or understand vocabulary thatisunfamiliartothem.

Either one question to be answered by a piece of extended writing in approximately 400 words or two questions to be answered in approximately 200 words each. IftwoquestionsareansweredtheycanbetakenfromthesameorfromdifferentaspectsofRomanculture.

AllassessmentsforOCR’sEntryLevelinLatinareinternally-assessedandexternally-moderated.
Learners’workshouldbemarkedbythecentreassessortothemarkingcriteriaintherelevanttable,usinga‘best-fit’approach.
Markingshouldbepositive,rewardingachievementratherthanpenalisingomissions.Theawardingofmarksmustbedirectlyrelatedtothemarkingcriteria.

RegulationsgoverningarrangementsforinternalassessmentsarecontainedintheJCQInstructions forconductingnon-examinationassessments.
Level of support
OCRexpectsteacherstosuperviseandguidecandidateswhoareundertakingworkthatisinternallyassessed.Thedegreeofteacherguidancewillvaryaccordingtothekindofworkbeingundertaken.Itshouldberemembered,however,thatcandidates are required to reach their own judgementsandconclusions.Whensupervisinginternallyassessedtasks,teachersareexpectedto:offercandidatesadviceabouthowbesttoapproachsuchtasksexercisesupervisionoftheworkinordertomonitorprogressandtopreventplagiarismensure
thattheworkiscompletedinaccordancewith thespecificationrequirementsandcanbeassessed inaccordancewiththespecifiedmarkdescriptionsandprocedures.Workshould,whereverpossible, becarriedoutundersupervision.However,itisacceptedthatsometasksmayrequirecandidatestoundertake work outside the centre. Where this is thecase,thecentremustensurethatsufficientsupervised work takes place to allow the teachers concernedtoauthenticateeachcandidate’sworkwithconfidence.
Authentication of learner’s work
Centresmustdeclarethattheworksubmittedforassessmentisthelearner’sownbycompletingacentreauthenticationform(CCS160).ThisinformationmustberetainedatthecentreandbeavailableonrequesttoeitherOCRortheJCQcentre
inspectionservice.Itmustbekeptuntilthedeadlinehaspassedforcentrestosubmitareviewofresults(RoR).OncethisdeadlinehaspassedandcentreshavenotrequestedaRoR,thisevidencecanbedestroyed.

The Head of Centre is required to provide a declarationtotheJCQaspartoftheannualNCNupdate,conductedintheautumnterm,toconfirmthatthecentreismeetingalloftherequirementsdetailedinthespecification.
Any failure by a centre to provide the Head of Centre AnnualDeclarationwillresultinyourcentrestatusbeingsuspendedandcouldleadtothewithdrawalofour approval for you to operate as a centre.

Centresmustcarryoutinternalstandardisationtoensurethatmarksawardedbydifferentteachersare
accurate and consistent across all learners entered for theassessmentfromthatcentre.
Moderation
Private candidates
PrivatecandidatesmayenterforOCRassessments.
Aprivatecandidateissomeonewhopursuesacourseofstudyindependentlybuttakesanexaminationorassessmentatanapprovedexaminationcentre.Aprivatecandidatemaybeapart-timestudent,someonetakingadistancelearningcourse,orsomeonebeingtutoredprivately.TheymustbebasedintheUK.
TheEntryLevelCertificateinLatinrequireslearnerstocompletetwoLanguagetestsandtheRomanCulturetask(s).
Private candidates need to contact OCR approved centres to establish whether they are prepared to host themasaprivatecandidate.ThecentremaychargeforthisfacilityandOCRrecommendsthatthearrangementismadeearlyinthecourse.

Thepurposeofmoderationistobringthemarkingofinternally-assessedtasksinallparticipatingcentrestoanagreedstandard.Thisisachievedbycheckingasampleofeachcentre’smarkingoflearner’swork.
Followinginternalstandardisation,centressubmitmarkstoOCRandthemoderator.Ifthereare10learnersorfewer,alltheworkshouldbesubmittedformoderationatthesametimeasmarksaresubmitted.
OncemarkshavebeensubmittedtoOCRandyourmoderator,centreswillreceiveamoderationsamplerequest.Sampleswillincludeworkfromacrosstherangeofattainmentofthelearners’work.SeeSection5donrulesonsubmittingfiles.
Therearetwowaystosubmitasample:
Moderation via the OCR Repository–Whereyouupload electronic copies of the work included in the
sampletotheOCRRepositoryandyourmoderatoraccessestheworkfromthere.
Postal moderation–Whereyoupostthesampleofworktothemoderator.
Themethodthatwillbeusedtosubmitthemoderationsamplemustbespecifiedwhenmakingentries.TherelevantentrycodesaregiveninSection4aabove.
Alllearners’workmustbesubmittedusingthesameentryoption.Itisnotpossibleforcentrestoofferbothoptionswithinthesameseries.
Each learner’s work should have a cover sheet attachedtoitwithasummaryofthemarksawardedforthethreetasks.Iftheworkistobesubmittedindigitalformat,thiscoversheetshouldalsobesubmittedelectronicallywithineachlearner’sfolder.

Grade Scale
EntryLevelqualificationsaregradedonthescale:Entry3,Entry2andEntry1,whereEntry3isthehighestgradeavailable.Learnerswhofailtoreachthe
minimumstandardofEntry1willbeUnclassified(U).OnlysubjectsinwhichgradesEntry3,Entry2andEntry1areattainedwillberecordedoncertificates.
Results
Results are released to centres and learners for informationandtoallowanyqueriestoberesolvedbeforecertificatesareissued.
Centreswillhaveaccesstothefollowingresults’informationforeachlearner:
• thegradeforthequalification
• therawmarkforeachassessment
Thefollowingsupportinginformationwillbeavailable:
• gradeboundariesforeachentryoption.
Untilcertificatesareissued,resultsaredeemedtobeprovisionalandmaybesubjecttoamendment.
Alearner’sfinalresultswillberecordedonanOCRcertificate.Thequalificationtitlewillbeshownonthecertificateas‘OCREntryLevelCertificateinLatin’.
4e. Post-results services
Anumberofpost-resultsservicesareavailable:
• Review of results–Ifyouarenothappywiththeoutcomeofalearner’sresults,centresmayrequestareviewoftheirmoderation.
• Missing and incomplete results–Thisserviceshouldbeusedifanindividualsubjectresultforalearnerismissing,orthelearnerhasbeenomittedentirelyfromtheresultssupplied.

It is the responsibility of the Head of Centre to report(inwriting)allcasesofsuspectedmalpracticeinvolvingcentrestafforlearners,toOCR [email protected].
