WHAT IS A SIPHON?

• An inverted siphon uses pressurization to push the flow from one location to another through a “U” shaped tube or pipe.

Clear Fork Drainage Area M-210 Sewer Improvements Project

• A siphon uses a vacuum to pull fluids from one location to another through a “humped” tube or pipe, thus…..

INVERTED SIPHON DEFINED• More specifically, an Inverted Siphon is a pipe for conducting

water beneath a depressed place, as from one hill to another across an intervening valley, following the depression of the ground or more simply put - a “Depressed Sewer”.

INVERTED SIPHONS

Clear Fork Drainage Area M-210 Sewer Improvements Project

• Siphons are an often used utility solution in a CE’s technical toolbox to clear existing structural & hydraulic conflicts with proposed gravity sewers

• Inverted Siphons are also a popular design concept used for permanent meter stations.

EFFICIENT SIPHON DESIGNS:

Clear Fork Drainage Area M-210 Sewer Improvements Project

• Size Pipe Diameters to achieve Scouring Velocities > 3.0 fps at least ONCE daily

• Integrate Hydraulic Slides in Siphon Structures

• Seek Laminar Flows Entering and Exiting the Siphon

Page 6: Eliminating Chronic Sanitary Sewer Overflows in a Historic Fort ...

EFFICIENT SIPHON DESIGNS:

Clear Fork Drainage Area M-210 Sewer Improvements Project

• Odor Control (addresses the “Bad Air” that is coming to your siphon)

• Control Active and Passive Corrosion

• Produce a Maintenance Friendly Design

Page 7: Eliminating Chronic Sanitary Sewer Overflows in a Historic Fort ...

POOR SIPHON DESIGNS:

Clear Fork Drainage Area M-210 Sewer Improvements Project

• Does Not achieve Scouring Velocities > 3.0 fps• Excess use of Hard Bends and Weir Walls in Siphon Structures• “Turbulent” Flows Entering and Exiting the Siphon• Corrosion is not Controlled• Difficult Siphon Maintenance• Poorly addressed Odor Control

M-210 PROJECT BACKGROUND

Clear Fork Drainage Area M-210 Sewer Improvements Project

• Existing M-210 Clear Fork Trinity River 18-in Single Barrel Siphon is Undersized.

• Two (2) recurring SSO’s (TCEQ monitored) are located immediately upstream of siphon.

• Existing SS Mains (M-64R & M-210) serving this prominent and historic area of Fort Worth (includes TCU campus) are undersized (21” and CIPP lined 24”, respectively).

• M64, M-64R and M-210 are located throughout the Colonial Country Club (CCC) golf course & most of those manholes are capped with concrete and buried due to prior SSO’s.

M-210 PROJECT BACKGROUND - Continued

Clear Fork Drainage Area M-210 Sewer Improvements Project

• An undersized single barrel siphon crosses Mockingbird Ln. and USACE 7’x7’ box culvert with integrated floodwall discharging into M-210 at the manhole on the No. 15 Tee box.

• Manhole in Mockingbird Ln. at Hartwood St. is a recurring TCEQ monitored SSO location.

• Heavy rains in 2007 resulted in an overflow at the No. 15 Tee Box manhole during the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial Country Club Tournament Pro-Am event.

M-210 PROJECT AREA

Clear Fork Drainage Area M-210 Sewer Improvements Project

Holistically, the M-210 project presented a wide array of unique challenges:• Permitting• Coordination• Jurisdictional Issues• Construction Windows• High Profile Project• Pipeline Design• Siphon Design• Traffic Control

M-210 Drainage Areas & Flows

Clear Fork Drainage Area M-210 Sewer Improvements Project

• Upper M-210: Q (5 Yr.. Peak) = ~3.49 MGD

• M-64R: Q (5 Yr. Peak) = ~5.00 MGD

• M-71 & M-72: Q (5 Yr. Peak) = ~2.11 MGD

• Lower M-210: Q (5 Yr. Peak) = ~10.6 MGD

• Upper M-37: Q (5 Yr. Peak) = ~1.57 MGD

Note: Due to DS Surcharging Conditions in M-272C - Only 1.2 MGD of M-37 Sewer Flows were assumed to contribute and used for the new Trinity River Siphon Design. Q(Total) = 11.80 MGD

Page 13: Eliminating Chronic Sanitary Sewer Overflows in a Historic Fort ...

M-210 PROJECT – INITIAL SCOPE OF WORK• Primary objectives were to identify

& evaluate re-route options to divert ~5.0 MGD of flow along the western CCC property line.

• USACE levee in the area is actually located on private property (berm on CCC’s No. 14 fairway).

• Any proposed gravity relief main along the western boundary would be located in the “toe of the slope of the levee” and not allowed.

• Evaluated various lift station & force main scenarios – all were Rejected.

M-210 DESIGN PARAMETERS

• 7,503 LF of 18 to 42-inch diameter Sewer Mains (PVC & FRP)• 543 LF (16 and 30 inch diameter) Double Barrel Inverted Siphon. • Nine foot (9 ft.) of fall exists from the upper project limits in

Hartman St. to the bottom of the project limits in Riverfront Dr.• Relief Interceptor crosses Howards Branch Creek at Mockingbird

St. and a 54-inch storm sewer and deep drainage swale in Forest Park before crossing the Trinity River at Riverfront Dr.

• Phased construction between annual Colonial Invitational Tournaments and other Civic Functions held in this area.

• Limited street widths and deep sewer mains (Depths to 40 ft.).

M-210 DESIGN PARAMETERS - CONTINUED• Heavy Neighborhood Traffic Volumes• Popular Public Park and Steak Restaurant Located near the

Siphon Outfall - Access Impacts & Odor Control • Examined HDD options for individual and combined pipe

combinations for the River crossing – Rejected for Cost and Constructability issues.

• Analyzed multiple pipe material combinations to try to optimize the hydraulic efficiencies of the siphon.

• Corrosion Protection - Used ConShield Additive and Polymer Concrete Structures

• Permitting……

M-210 SIPHON CALCULATIONS

Clear Fork Drainage Area M-210 Sewer Improvements Project

• Siphon Length includes 5-ft drop in elevation (field change) after numerous analysis iterations adjusting the siphon lengths and evaluating different fitting angles.

• Analyzed multiple pipe material combinations to optimize the hydraulic efficiencies of the siphon. Used DR 11 (DIPS) 16” and 30” HDPE.

• Available head drop through the siphon was 2.435 ft.

• Evaluated impacts of internal HDPE beading from butt fusing
