Past Domestic Programs
More Somali refugees are resettled in Minnesota than any other state, and although Minnesota prides itself on being one of the healthiest states in the nation, large health disparities exist within minority, immigrant and refugee communities.
What We Do
This initiative—in partnership with the Confederation of Somali Community in Minnesota (CSCM) aims to bridge the gap between the Somali community and healthcare providers in Minnesota and reduce health disparities in key areas.
Our program increases the level of knowledge, awareness and skills in the Somali community surrounding key health issues and improves overall access to health care. We:
Create cultural competence trainings for health providers • who serve Somali clients.Conduct community-based participatory research with • the Somali community to better understand community assets and needs.Train community health workers to serve the Somali • community by doing outreach and make referrals.Develop culturally appropriate health education materials •
What perpetuates these disparities? General demographic and health-specific data on the Somali population is scarce. Many refugees feel isolated and are unable to navigate the U.S. healthcare system. Few health education materials are available in the Somali language. Somali culture often clashes with that of healthcare providers.

About Us Every Dollar Helps Get Involved
n We work for a world in which
communities are able to improve
their own health through education
and organization.
n We work both domestically and
internationally, primarily in East
African countries or with East
African immigrants.
n We educate and train community
members in the following areas
$10 pays for a delivery kit for a trained
traditional birth attendant in Tanzania to
provide safe emergency deliveries and
protect against blood-borne diseases.
$20 allows community health workers in
Uganda to visit 10 clients per month with
family planning information.
$35 delivers family planning supplies to
hard-to-reach health units in Uganda.
$45 pays for a family planning outreach
day in a Ugandan community.
$75 pays for the complete training of a
community health worker in Uganda.
$80 buys a bicycle for a village health
worker to use for community health
education and care for pregnant women
and sick children in Tanzania.
$500 trains 20 traditional birth attendants
in Tanzania in safe delivery, antenatal care
and referral services.
Donations of your time are always accepted, and there are three primary ways in which you can get involved and make a difference:
Volunteer: There are volunteer oppurtunites available both domestically and internationally, for people of all educational backgrounds.
Intern: Students who are seeking an internship for credit are encouraged to apply, and oppurtunities range from administrative assistance to communications to education.
Employment: Opportunities for employment at WellShare are primarily in the international public health field.
