About “Identities”
Identities is a Web Magazine aiming to promote Edinburgh and provide information’s about the City
My name is Nico Erbach , I am a Student at Edinburgh Napier University in Edinburgh. I am writing this Web Magazine to promote the City I learned to love “Edinburgh”. I was born in Germany and grew up there till the age of 14, that’s when my journey around the Globe began. I moved to Singapore in South East Asia and spent the next 4 years of my live there and learned to appreciate different cultures and I became culturally aware. I graduated and received my International Baccalaureate but I did not end my journey in Singapore, the next step I took was to move to Edinburgh and start Studying. I lived in Edinburgh for two years and it is a very beautiful City. When people back home in Germany would ask me about Edinburgh I would just answer it is one of the most beautiful Cities I have ever seen. Edinburgh with all its parks and old imperial buildings looks like it has been untouched for centuries but yet the City is filled with modern technologies and modern people.
I am Studying “Interactive media design” and I am using this Webzine as coursework. A Big hobby of mine is Photography so I spent a couple of days walking about in Edinburgh taking pictures and engaging with the City and it has been it that time that I realized that there is so much more to Edinburgh that just old buildings and nice Parks. This City is alive with people of all ages and ethnicities. I started to focus more on the Cultural side of the city trying to bring out what is beneath the surface. Edinburgh the “inspiring Capital” of Scotland, the home of the Scottish Parliament, host of Fringe Festival and four Universities are located in Edinburgh.
Personally I think Edinburgh is an easy going City. I this publication I will focus on the cultural aspects of Edinburgh and on what Edinburgh has thought me as a person. Edinburgh has been a big influence on my life since it is here where I first lived on my own and had to learn to be responsible and independent. Edinburgh has a lot of charm and is an international City due to the large amount of Students and tourists dwelling in the City.
Edinburgh is the Capital of Scotland and has about half a million inhabitants. Edinburgh is a relatively small city when compared to other European Capitals and City’s and another thing the British island is famous for is the weather and not the good kind. Despite its size, Edinburgh is compact and a very “friendly” City. People here are friendly and always ready to help out. Through out the year Edinburgh is host to many events and festivals and the most famous one is probably the Edinburgh “Fringe” Festival and the “Edinburgh Military Tattoo” which are on in the late summer months. Both of these events attract large amounts of people and Edinburgh becomes alive with street performers and artists that are trying to get everyone’s attention.
Around this time of year it is the busiest on the streets of Edinburgh and the weather the nicest. The city’s many parks and green areas are blossoming and provide a perfect contrast to the busy streets. Edinburgh is ecological aware and tries to preserve its parks and nature. At the moment Edinburgh is investing in a new tram system to reduce traffic in the City; other approaches include a very good bus system and strict parking restrictions to keep Edinburgh free from overwhelming traffic. All in all Edinburgh is a very lovely City to visit with all the old buildings the green parks and the irresistible charm of the people.

International Edinburgh
Edinburgh might not seem like an international player since it is just a small domestic capital, high up north. So you might ask why it should be, well Edinburgh is the seat of the Scottish parliament, get a lot of attention due to its charm. The Fringe Festival is a significant event in Edinburgh and many students that a studying at one of the 4 universities are coming from all over the world to pick Edinburgh as their temporary home of choice. It is a City full of young people how are thriving on the education provided by the Universities. Furthermore Scotland is planning on holding a referendum to become independent from the United Kingdom, which would make Edinburgh one of Europe Capitals. Edinburgh is a culturally very diverse and is does not matter where people come from, what language they speak or what color their skin is. Scotland has a history of conflict between Catholics and Protestants but I personally have never encountered anyone who even asked what believes I got. Tourism is flourishing in Edinburgh because of many reasons but I think above all is the fact that Edinburgh is a beautiful City. Edinburgh remained untouched by any destructive forces no wars and no big natural disasters shook the city in very long time. Edinburgh is located in a peaceful area but thousands of years ago, Edinburgh and its surrounding areas were covered in Volcanoes that forged the landscape we can see today. Arthurs seat, a inactive volcano is very close to the City center and is a popular tourist attraction dues to the beautiful view form the top of it.
To someone who has never been to Edinburgh, It might not seem to be a great place to Study. Its cold, the weather is bad, people speak funny, there is high fees for international Students and it’s not even a particularly big City but the are some things that makes Edinburgh a very great place to Study. For one thing there is a very large amount of Students in the city. Edinburgh has 4 University’s and some smaller colleges so Education is a big thing in Edinburgh. The large amount of students is an Indicator of how student friendly the City is. You got a nightlife that has something for everyone and organizations that help Students to get around. Many Students who come to Edinburgh are independent for the first time. They left their Family home and move to the City on their own. It’s a big step in everyone’s life, living on your own for the first time. So it is just natural that people have to learn how to be independent and responsible and Edinburgh give you a great deal of Support because there is many people who are facing the same challenges and they are willing to help you. For European Students there are organizations that help with finical problems and the Student Award Agency Scotland helps with University fees and Student loans and bursaries. All in all Edinburgh is very Student friendly and helps students to become a responsible part of society. Personally I enjoy living in Edinburgh and studying here and I have recommended it to some of my friends back home.
Edinburgh a Student City
The Digital City
Digital City? To many people this seems odd because Edinburgh gives the impression of an Old and conservative City. All the old building produce and Image of an old analog city but in fact it is the polar opposite Edinburgh is full of media and new technologies. One great example is the Bus system in Edinburgh. The bus stops are equipped with screens that give real time updates on how when the bus is due to arrive and the buses themselves are equipped with RFID technology, this allows people with a Bus card to wirelessly pay their fare. Furthermore due to the Universities in Edinburgh new technology is being tested that helps new media to grow and expand. The City Council offers people to complete the much dreaded forms and applications online from home. The media sector in Edinburgh is growing and new applications for digital media are being found. Edinburgh Demonstrates that old things do not necessarily need to be old fashioned. Technology is always moving forward and Edinburgh is keeping pace and is adapting new technologies as they make an appearance. This very open mind set to new things keeps the City interesting because one never knows what to expect. In conclusion Edinburgh is promotes itself online and in the digital world quite well. People interested in technology get to enjoy this City because there are a lot little little things like Phone applications and little digital bits and pieces everywhere to discover and play around with.

Environmental Awareness
Edinburgh used to be called “the Auld Reekie” Which means as much as the Smokey one. Because of its many chimneys and the main method of heating used to be coal but these days are far-‐gone. Edinburgh is a modern City now and is aware of its environment and treasures its parks and green areas.
Arrangements have been met to reduce the traffic in the city center to a bare minimum and strict regulations have been made for littering and trash collection. Furthermore Edinburgh is investing in to public transport to make the city Greener and avoid traffic. Edinburgh does not have a lot of industry and one of its main ways of income is tourism. So it is beneficial to Edinburgh to be environmentally friendly and to keep the parks green, the streets empty and the air fresh. In general Edinburgh is very green and it likes to keep it this way the City has many parks to which stressed people can retreat and enjoy a bit of nature before returning to everyday life in this beautiful City. The City has a harbor but the industry there is kept to a minimum to avoid pollution at nearby coastal areas.
Due to Edinburgh’s geology its offers many greats views over the city that makes it very attractive to tourism.
