Pia Sen founded Notinee Indian Dance Group in 2006. It is the only group in Alabama that specializes in the unique Indian classical-fusion dance style first envisioned by India’s Nobel-laureate poet, Rabindranath Tagore. This style blends two contrasting classical dance styles (Manipuri and Odissi) with elements of folk dance from various parts of India. Today’s dancers hail from India, China, El Salvador, and the United States.
The Alabama State Council on the Arts has awarded Sudha Raghuram, artistic director of Shivalaya School of Dance based in Montgomery, AL, its Folk Artists Apprenticeship Grant every other year since 2000.
