friends and brothersI think it is fitting with the culture of the chapter, when I say that I came together in very unconventional ways. Executive Directors – unless they are Justin Kirk– do not do hands-on expansion work, and colonies –at least to my knowledge – are rarely started by two graduating seniors. But I feel that our chapter – much like our entire fraternity – has been about challenging the status quo since its inception. It is only fitting that most humble beginnings were unconventional.

Given the way the colony started (i.e. Justin Kirk’s visit to Boise at the end of October last year, and our rapid acquisition of the men that joined), I was notworried about the competency of the men. eir commendable work in making the colony a chapter was no surprise. What was a surprise was seeing all thehard work done for us by our advisory board, and IHQ. Without that kind of buy-in, the charter probably never would have been printed. I guess if I had to sum up our beginnings in one statement it would be this: From the perspective of a now Peace Corps volunteer, I can appreciate the humble, albeit big-thinking beginnings of our chapter. Much like Peace Corps service, establishing the chapter was neither comfortable nor smooth, but doing something important never is. We had big dreams of new grounds and world-changing ideas. We were more often than not brought down to reality in this regard. But weenjoyed many pleasant, small successes and did it in the company of people that we enjoyed. In hindsight, you can’t ask for much more than that.

Being a Founding Father of the Boise State chapter has shown me what can be accomplished when like-minded individuals join together to work towards a common goal. Even though I became involved with the Fraternity a few short months before installation, I still felt the same feeling of accomplishment as all the men did standing with me on April 30, 2011. For me, installation represents a culmination of hard work and dedication, as well as a jumping off point for the future. We laid groundwork that will guide men through their college years by giving them the opportunities to learn through doing as well as leading. Occasionally I still read the oath of initiation and marvel at the depth of meaning it has and the level of sentiment it promotes. I can’t imagine any other organization that exists where an individual has the opportunity to advance himself morally, intellectually, and socially while being surrounded by such high caliber people. As Dr. Bernard Franklin said, “There is still room on college campuses for elite organizations.” Delta Upsilon is that organization.

There is nothing more fantastic than sharingstories and heartfelt companionship over a roaring fire. Our fraternity gathered togetherto find unity, brotherhood, and "cultivate those sentiments which should ever exist between brothers." It was the perfect entry into Delta Upsilon, the perfect end to asummer. There I found my friends. ThereI found my brothers.

GreetingsOur year is winding down, and the promise of a new year is upon us. While reflecting on this last semester, i realize how different it would have b een if it weren't for the men of the b oise state c hap ter of Delta upsilon. It is refreshing to see a group of men who give themselves wholly to a set of ideals, particularly to those of our fraternity. rough this dedication, we've been able to develop a very close bond, one that becomes ever more present during the holiday season. Our ability to further this organization, the ideals for which it stands, and the bonds that it has helped to create would be impossible without our supporters. we would like to take the time to very sincerely thank you for all that you've done for us in the past year. I could not be any more proud of what these men have accomplished, and i am grateful that that was in large part thanks to you.

The fall retreat of Boise DU was a little over a month after I had accepted my bid. Sure I was still kinda new to the guys and the whole idea of brotherhood. But the 24 hours I spent with those men changed me relationship toward my Fraternity. I knew maybe 8 guys well, but a lot of them I only saw at chapter. Getting to see the bond they have was so strong allowed myself to open up to it and be part of it. I love my Brothers. All of them.

my dear brothersAs the incoming officers reflect on this past year, we take pride in the steps our chapter has taken, and we want to thank you for your support. In only six months, we went from a colony to a chapter, and we recognize this could not have been accomplished without many peoples’ guidance. Whether your help was explicit or not, your contributed to a culture of encouragement that has greatly helped our chapter succeed. Besides reflecting on our past year, we wil plan for the coming one. Our chapter has learned how a fraternity should operate, and is making progress towards better functioning. is trend will continue in the new year while we keep developing and refining our chapter’s processes. One aspect of those processes is our finances. t is imperative that we work arduously in this coming year to fundraise for a liquidity account. Our third focus will be recruitment. We realize that in order to be sustainable, we must greatly improve our ability to promote Delta Upsilon, and encourage the meritorious men of Boise State to consider joining Greek Life. continued below

I always thought that Greek Life wasn’t the thing for me. It was the realm of the popular people, the upper class aristocrats who owned yachts and were members of mom and dad’s country club and for most of my life I was the bookworm who was just an average kid. e men of Delta Upsilon at Boise State changed that all that. Even before I was given my bid these men welcomed me into my second year of college as family. Not only that, but they provided with the connections and tools needed to grow my network of friends and resources at Boise State. I couldn’t wait to receive my bid, and when I did I went home and decided to accept it the same night. e thoughts of all the incredible experiences and assured benefits of becoming a member of DU raced through my mind and I knew that the new year I needed to deliver Delta U the same dedication that they showed me. I am proud to be a DU and look forward to my initiation. Domenico Gelsomino 2014
