Incidents of teenagers causing selfharm to themselves with a blade or aknife is a worrying issue.HenningJacobs,traumasupportco-
ordinator at ER24, said cutting is nota new occurrence.Parents need to be aware that chil-
dren could possibly be cutting them-selves.“Teenagershavebeencutting them-
selves with blades or knives for thepast 10 years. After working withmany teenagers who had a cuttingproblem I have come across two con-clusions. The one conclusion is thatthere are some teenagers who cut toget attention and be ‘in with thecrowd’. These are insecure teenagerswho need some attention and accept-ance.“The secondgrouphowever iswhat
could be described as the real cutters.Cutting is an addiction. Some teenag-ers become addicted to the feeling ofcutting and the sensation of pain. When we speak to these teenagers wefind they have some form of traumaor depression in their lives,” said Ja-cobs.This trauma or depression can be a
result of a number of issues such asdivorce of parents, not being acceptedby parents or the death of a loved onefor example.Jacobs said these teenagers cut
themselves because they cannot dealwith the internal pain and heartachethey undergo.“These teenagers will tell you that
the physical pain they experiencefrom the cutting helps them forgetabout the internal pain they feel intheirhearts.Theysayitismucheasierto deal with physical pain than emo-tional pain.“These teenagers normally do not
get any support from their parents onhow to deal with emotional pain.
There is usually some form of familydysfunction present. You seldom findteenagers that grow up in a healthyand lovinghomewhowould cut them-selves intentionally,” said Jacobs.Manytroubledteens findtheir iden-
tity and acceptance within relation-ships. But thenwhen there is a break-up teenagers take it so seriously andpersonally.“This will in turn cause real emo-
tionalpain.Theythenresorttocuttingthemselves,” said Jacobs.Even the death of their favourite
musician or movie star can causethese emotional “cutting” reactions.Jacobs said parents play a vital role
in the lives of children. If a parent dis-covers their child is cutting them-selves it is vital theyhelp the child im-mediately.It iseasytofindoutifyourchildcuts
his or her self intentionally. Markswill be left behind. If your child is alwayswearing long
sleevesorlongpants, eventhroughoutsummer, they might be cutting them-selves.“If you findout your child is cutting
themselves do not burst out in anger. This will make the situation worse.“Reachoutwith ahelpinghandand
love. The first step is to determinewhether your child is cutting due togroup and friendship pressure or ifthey are addicted to cutting.“If they are simply cutting because
of group pressure then parents canhelp the child through support, loveand guidance.“However if the child is a cutter or
addicted to cutting due to trauma ordepression, parents must seek thehelp of an educational psychologist,”said Jacobs.ER24’s Emergency contact centre

SSttaarr SSiiggnnssStar Signs22 December to21 JanuaryCAPRICORN
Today you feel less competitive and ambitious about practical andmundane matters. The world of imagination, fantasy, art, music, ormysticism is very appealing to you now, and if you have talent in any
of these areas, this can be a creative and fruitful time for you. However, the negative possibilities for you now are beingundisciplined, slack, indefinite, or wasting time and energy.
21 January To20 FebruaryAQUARIUS
A sense of failure, self-doubt, or inability to effectively competeand assert your own will may typify this time period. Stifled angerand resentment over the frustrations and obstacles you confrontnow may further complicate matters. This is not a good time tobegin a new venture, ask for a promotion, or try to expand your
activities in any way.
20 February to21 MarchPISCES
Your thinking is rather gloomy and pessimistic at this time. Yousee the superficiality, the flaws, and the foolishness or
impracticality in others' plans. Also, communicating with othersis difficult now, and people resist what you are saying. You feel
more inhibited and uncommunicative, and you sense thatothers are not receptive
21 March to21 AprilARIES
At this time you are less willing to compromise or to overlookdifferences for the sake of harmony in your relationships and lesswilling to sacrifice your own needs and desires. Any tensions which
have been simmering in your marriage or other close associations arelikely to boil over now. If you are of an argumentative nature, quarrels
and confrontations will be more frequent.

his is a time for you to speak out about yourthoughts or concerns regarding your work or
professional matters. Communication with yoursuperiors or with people in authority who are in aposition to consider and act on your ideas comes to
the fore now.
22 June to23 JulyCANCER
Getting what you really want and moving toward achieving thethings which are important to you may involve surrendering
something or eliminating something from your life at this time.Perhaps an attitude, a situation, or an attachment that has beenimpeding you is now released. You feel free to concentrate on the
things that are most important to you now.
21 May to22 JuneGEMINI
Your drive for personal power, achievement, or control over your life isvery strong at this time. The tyrant in you emerges, and you can beexcessively willful, domineering, or compulsive about doing what youwant to. You battle anyone or anything that is an obstacle to yourindividual freedom of action, and ego conflicts or a furious power
struggle may ensue.
23 Julie to24 AugustLEO
Your ability to concentrate on mundane concerns and problemsdiminishes now. The world of imagination, fantasy, entertainment, orart holds more attraction for you. Go to a movie with a friend (or writeyour own!). Also, your psychic sensitivity and intuition are heightenedat this time. You are more impressionable and open, but somewhat
less precise and clear mentally.
24 August to23 SeptemberVIRGO
Dreams, wishes, and fantasies about love are strong now, and youmay be infatuated with someone you meet at this time, only to be
disappointed later when you discover this person does not fulfill all ofyour expectations. You are simply not seeing people objectively now.Your imagination is very active and creative, however, and so is your
yearning for something beautiful.
23 September to23 OctoberLIBRA
Your ability to concentrate on mundane concerns and problemsdiminishes now. The world of imagination, fantasy, entertainment, orart holds more attraction for you. Go to a movie with a friend (orwrite your own!). Also, your psychic sensitivity and intuition are
heightened at this time. You are more impressionable and open, butsomewhat less precise and clear mentally.
23 October to23 NovemberSCORPIO
Positive connections are made with others, and you may meet a newfriend. You may also want to call or write someone you love, simplyto cheer them up or tell them you love them. This is a good time to
phone friends or family, write personal letters, or record anythoughts or feelings that you have. Emotions and personal biases
are apt to cloud your objectivity.
23 November to22 DecemberSAGITTARIUS
Financial excesses and spending money you don't have onpleasure or luxury are indicated. Over-eating or partying to
excess can also lead to trouble. You may actually get ill from toomuch rich food, sweets, or alcohol, so exercise caution. Beware, too, of anyone or anything which is presented to you now which
looks too good to be true - no doubt it is.

Method:
First off, cream the butter and sugar. Add the eggs one at a time and mix until incorporated. Sift the flour and bakingpowder, add the salt and spices and add the milk as you mix it all through. Transfer the batter to an oven safe dish ofabout 20 x 30 cm. Add the segmented peaches to the batter, push a few pieces into the batter. Sprinkle with cinnamon
sugar and bake in the oven, at 180 degrees Celsius for 40 minutes. In the meantime, combine the condensed milk, waterand vanilla and heat in the microwave until runny. As the cobbler comes out the oven, prick the baked batter and pour the
hot syrup over the baked goodness. Serve with whipped cream or homemade custard. Serves 8-10.

You the entrepreneur: Good habitsfor EntrepreneursDAVID MALHERBE
Some people believe that you are born anentrepreneur, or not. I believe thoughthat many people who never thought ofthemselves as entrepreneurs, once theystarted a business, eventually say thatthey cannot imagine themselves everagain to work for someone else.
Some say that entrepreneurs have certaintraits or characteristics and that if you don’thave it, you don’t have it. I would rather saythat most people can learn the necessaryskills and good habits that will enable themto become good entrepreneurs.StevenCovey inhis bookTheSevenHabits
of Highly Effective People (Powerful lessonsin personal change) discusses seven habitsthat can help you become more successful. One of the habits that he emphasises is to
“Put first things first.” He says tobe able to accomplish this, weshould occupy ourselves withthose things that are importantbut not yet urgent. But often we as business own-
ers tend to procrastinate ondoingthose important tasks becausethey are not yet urgent. Yet whenthey become urgent, you are in afrenzy because all of a suddenyouhave so much to do that you don’tknow which way to turn.Brian Walsh of Entrepreneur.co.za gives
some advice on how to keep out of the urgentzone by overcoming procrastination. Hesays that we should see those importanttasks thatwedonot likeand tend topostpone,as a live frog that we have to eat each day.His advice is to eat the live frog first. After that anything else you need to do the
rest of the day will seem much eas-ier because the worst is done. Hesays that this habit will make youmuch more productive as well asmore successful. This will alsokeep those important tasks frommoving to where they become ur-gent.One of the other habits that Cov-
ey emphasizes is to “be proactive”,which basically means to attend tothings before they become prob-lematic. To eat the live frogs first
as Walsh recommends, you will certainly beproactive and it will help you to avoid crisismanagement.* David Malherbe is a business and career
consultant and lives in Wellington. He can becontacted via his website www.jedidi-ah.org.za or on 021 873 0262 or on Facebookat “Jy die Entrepreneur.”
