Exploratory Students Choosing a major is a big step toward deciding who you will become after graduation. And sometimes, students are not quite ready to make that final decision. That’s OK. At NMSU, you can start as an Exploratory Student and delve into different degree options while taking courses that will help keep you on track toward earning your bachelor’s degree. Freshman Admission Requirements Students who meet the minimum high school course requirements listed in the chart below must meet one of the following criteria in order to be admitted:

§ Cumulative high school GPA of 2.75§ Ranked in the top 20 percent of their graduating class§ ACT composite score of 21 or SAT score of 990 (SAT score of 1060 for new format)

NMSU uses combined scores from the critical verbal and math portions of the SAT for admission and scholarship purposes. NMSU will be taking scores from the traditional SAT and the new SAT format, which was launched March 2016.

Note: All entering freshmen must submit official ACT or SAT scores before final admission is granted. ACT code=2638, SAT=4531

Applicants who meet all the requirements listed above will be offered admission to NMSU. An applicant who does not meet all the requirements may also be offered admission if a review of their additional information indicates that the student would be successful at NMSU. We encourage all students to apply for admission to NMSU. When reviewing the admissibility of students, we consider many factors, including high school GPA, test scores, dual-credit coursework, leadership experience, community involvement and other accomplishments. Applicants may be asked for additional information, including academic letters of

recommendation, in support of their application.

Aggie Pathway In the Aggie Pathway to the Baccalaureate Program, our system of five campuses works together to navigate you toward a bachelor’s degree – even if you initially don’t meet admission requirements to the university. Aggie Pathway students may transition to the Las Cruces campus after successful completion of:

§ 24 credits, in addition to any required developmental courses

§ 2.50 cumulative college GPA

Students participating in the Aggie Pathway program can attend academic, cultural and athletic events on the NMSU Las Cruces campus. Priscilla BloomquistPROFESSOR’S

BEYOND CLASSROOM

Priscilla Bloomquist, a professor in the School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management, was on the ground floor of what ultimately became one of the top programs in the country. Almost 30 years ago, Bloomquist made her way from Wisconsin to Las Cruces to assist in starting the now-famed HRTM program – the only such program in the state of New Mexico.

Her teaching awards are many and publications great, but her greatest impact has been the way in which she has challenged students to become more than they ever dreamed of being.

Take for instance Catrina Miyazaki With Bloomquist as a mentor, this recent grad was able to complete her HRTM bachelor’s along with two minors (marketing and business administration) in four years.

Students with a passion for social equality have found a phenomenal teacher and mentor in Neil Harvey, government professor and department head. Originally from the United Kingdom, Harvey has been teaching at NMSU for more than 20 years, empowering students with the tools and knowledge to be able to make a difference in communities – especially for people suffering from injustices.

He specializes in comparative politics, Latin America, Mexico and the U.S.-Mexico border, making NMSU and Las Cruces a perfect fit for Harvey.

Throughout the years, many students have been influenced by Harvey, inspiring them to carve their own path to success. Ismael Torres ’17 is one of those students.

OUT-OF-STATE SCHOLARSHIPS & BUDGETS

Students from outside New Mexico have many opportunities to attend New Mexico State University’s Las Cruces campus without the out-of-state cost. The Western Undergraduate Exchange, Colorado-Arizona Waiver and 135 Mile Texas Tuition scholarship waiver reduce the out-of-state tuition to an amount that is comparable to the in-state rate.

These tuition waivers are automatically awarded once admitted to NMSU. Another opportunity for nonresident students to reduce tuition is through the Out-of-State Competitive scholarship. Begin Here Start by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at FAFSA.ED.GOV. Apply early! Deadlines are usually early in the year. Priority deadline for some limited funds is March 1. Make sure to review your Student Aid Report (SAR), which is sent after the FAFSA has been completed. Your SAR contains the information reported on your FAFSA and includes your Expected Family Contribution (EFC). The EFC, a measure of your family’s financial situation, is used to determine your eligibility for federal student aid. Review your SAR information and make corrections or changes online at FAFSA.ED.GOV, if necessary. The school(s) you list on your FAFSA will get your SAR data electronically.

Award Notification The award letter is your notification of aid for the upcoming academic year. You can access the NMSU electronic award letter to accept or decline your awards at MY.NMSU.EDU.

Terms of Your Award§ You must be classified as a degree-seeking student at NMSU to be eligible for financial aid. Students who are non-degree status are not eligible for financial aid.

Your Award Timeline If you are awarded a grant, scholar-ship, waiver, or student loan, funds will be automatically credited to your account during the first week of school (funds will be applied to charges owed). If there are excess funds, NMSU will forward the funds to your direct deposit account or issue you a check. Submitting a late application may result in funds being delayed. Part of your financial aid package may include a student loan. There are three types of Direct Loans: Subsidized,

Unsubsidized and PLUS. To accept a Federal Direct Loan in your aid package, go to the Student tab in MY.NMSU.EDU. Federal regulations specify that all students who are borrowing a Federal Direct Loan for the first time, or the first time at NMSU, must complete Entrance Counseling and a Master Promissory Note (MPN) before any loans will be processed. Satisfactory Academic Progress Federal regulations require all students receiving federal financial aid to meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) in order to maintain eligibility for financial aid. Students are evaluated at the end of each semester in order to determine if Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements are being met. SAP requirements include:

§ GPA Requirement: As an undergraduate student, you must maintain at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA.

§ Completion Rate: You must complete 70 percent of all hours attempted.

§ Maximum Time Frame: You must complete your program of study within 150 percent of the published length of the degree.

Students who are moved by the rhythm of dance will gain a worldly education from Debra Knapp, a professor of dance at NMSU. A celebrated educator, Knapp has been on the dance faculties of several universities around the country and at the Palucca School Academy of Performing Arts in Dresden, Germany.

She is a professional dancer, choreographer and producer, having traveled the globe to impart her knowledge of and passion for dance. But her biggest impact is felt right here on campus. In the short time that Reza Foudazi has been at NMSU, he has opened many doors and introduced several undergraduate students to the discovery of new knowledge. In the last three years, 13 undergraduate students have gained experience in research thanks to the efforts of Foudazi, an assistant professor in chemical and materials engineering.

In addition to conducting high-standard research, these students have won different awards, fellowships and grants. For example, Jesus Au ’17 participated in a 10-week summer program with Foudazi at the University of Minnesota. The program provided opportunities for research experiences with the intent to extend and increase the understanding of materials science and engineering.

InterFaith Council at NMSUThe InterFaith Council at NMSU is a group of organizations that offer help in spiritual growth, support and guidance to students, faculty and staff. The council provides opportunities for those in the NMSU community to explore their own faith tradition and engage people from other faith traditions; they serve as a referral service for students, faculty and staff needing spiritual counseling. Cheryl LombardiNURTURING A NEW

GENERATION OF HEALTH

PROFESSIONALS

Prior to 2013, Cheryl Lombardi was a fixture in the healthcare industry in Las Cruces. This Aggie alum worked at Memorial Medical Center, MountainView Regional Medical Center and the Rehabilitation Hospital of Southern New Mexico, all in different roles.

Now as a college assistant professor at NMSU, Lombardi is sharing her knowledge and experience with many aspiring nurses. For the past three years, Lombardi has advocated and supported student achievements, and at times has offered comforting words during trials and tribulations. “Listening, understanding and supporting are important factors as a mentor and professor, as this enables students to continue moving forward and eventually graduate,” she notes.

Zack Wills ’16 is one of the many students at NMSU who has been “blessed with amazing mentors” like Lombardi.

“SHE HAS ENHANCED MY EXPERIENCE AT NMSU SIMPLY BY ALWAYS BEING IN MY CORNER, ALWAYS ON MY SIDE,” ZACK SAID.

NMSU RingGraduating NMSU students who purchase a ring can participate in a special ceremony held in the fall and spring semesters prior to graduation. After receiving their rings, students will wear them with the school name facing inward. After the granting of degrees at commencement, graduates turn their rings around with the school name facing outward, symbolizing they are now ready to face the world.

Noche de LuminariasNoche de Luminarias takes place the first Sunday in December at the Corbett Center Student Union. Members of the NMSU community are invited to stroll around Corbett Center and the surround-ing area at night by the glow of the 6,000 luminarias. Other activities during this event include horse-drawn trolley rides, caroling and other music.

Painting of the “A”What started as a prank has become a long standing tradition. In the early 1920s, students formed a bucket brigade up Tortugas Mountain and painted an “A” on the mountain. Almost a century later, students still maintain the tradition dur-ing the Greek event “A Day of Service.”

Crimson & WhiteCrimson and white are the official colors of NMSU. Crimson represents passion and vigor, while white represents good-ness and purity.

The Big EventThe Big Event brings together students, alumni, faculty and staff in an effort to say thank you to the Las Cruces community for their support of NMSU. Participants volunteer with non-profit organizations.

Crimson FridaysOn Fridays before a sporting event, NMSU students and staff wear crimson in support of the Aggies.

Halloween HowlSponsored by Campus Activities and various student organizations, Halloween Howl is an alternative activity to trick-or-treating.

Homecoming Week Homecoming occurs every year, mid fall semester. Throughout the week, events are held for students and alumni to at-tend. The week ends with a football game and the naming of the king and queen.

Keep State Great Keep State Great takes place the week before Homecoming each fall semester. Students, alumni, faculty and staff com-mit their time to beautifying the campus with projects such as cleaning, painting and picking up trash.

“Tough Enough to Wear Pink”In the fall, the NMSU Aggies “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” campaign helps raise money and awareness for breast can-cer research. NMSU sports teams support the cause by wearing pink uniforms, and fans are encouraged to wear pink as well.

Athletic ProwessFor the second season in a row, NMSU won the Western Athletic Conference Commissioner’s Cup. The cup is awarded annually to the school that performs the best in each of the WAC’s championships.

Men’s BasketballAnother outstanding season for men’s basketball concluded with its 28th season of winning at least 20 games. The Aggies represented NMSU at the prestigious Na-tional Invitational Tournament, continu-ing to showcase their exceptional skills.

Women’s BasketballFor the second time in NMSU history, the women’s basketball team had back-to-back 20-win seasons. The Aggies also won the Western Athletic Conference Cham-pionship for the second year in a row and received an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Women’s GolfThe women’s golf team won its third

straight Western Athletic Conference Championship title, catapulting them into the NCAA Regional Tournament in Alabama.

SoftballFor the second year in a row, the Aggie softball team secured the Western Ath-letic Conference regular season title.

Men’s TennisWith its second Western Athletic Con-ference Championship win, the men’s tennis team earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament – its fourth time in program history. Four members of the tennis team were selected to the WAC All-Tournament team.

Women’s TennisThe women’s tennis team completed another standout season, placing second in the Western Athletic Conference Championship. Two team members were named to the WAC All-Tournament team.

VolleyballIn one of the greatest seasons in program history, the volleyball team won the West-ern Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships. The Aggies finished conference play 14-0, be-coming one of only four teams in WAC history to go undefeated in league play.
