Welcome to the seventh annual U.S. News STEM Solutions National Leadership Conference. From the beginning, our goal has been to spotlight what’s working to prepare America’s youth and the country’s labor force to succeed in today’s – and tomorrow’s – jobs. This year, we’ve sharpened our focus even more, as you can tell from the conference’s new name: Workforce of Tomorrow: Skills, Jobs and the New Collar Economy. Over the next couple of days, we’ll be examining in particular the wide range of promising programs at the postsecondary level and in industry that are transforming the workforce development landscape across the country.

Even with all of your hard work and attention, the skills gap that makes it difficult for so many employers to find highly qualified workers remains a critical issue. Students in the U.S. continue to lag many of their foreign peers in math and science, and recruiting and retaining them in the STEM fields remains a steep challenge. Women and minority students and professionals remain vastly underrepresented. Meanwhile, the arrival of artificial intelligence and the specter of rapid and widespread automation promise ever more uncertainty about the lay of the land ahead.

Fortunately, there are many pockets of progress across the country – indeed, the 56 communities of the STEM Learning Ecosystems, an initiative that is partnering with us at the conference, offer some of the most compelling examples of what is possible when local and regional stakeholders craft solutions together. Our program features case studies on two of them, the Great Lakes Bay Regional STEM Initiative in Michigan and the Northeast Florida Regional STEM2 Hub.

Other program highlights include discussions on advanced technologies and their impact on the job outlook, the move toward lifelong learning and alternative pathways such as apprenticeships, and ways in which higher education can become more responsive to evolving needs – by collaborating with industry to provide meaningful learning experiences, say. Since we’re here in Washington, we’ll spend some time on the government role – hearing about administration priorities from Jeff Weld, a senior policy advisor in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, for example, and about innovative initiatives at the state level from Governors John Hickenlooper of Colorado and Mary Fallin of Oklahoma.

We’re also delighted to be partnering again with the USA Science and Engineering Festival, which promises to shed light on a number of important STEM issues this weekend for students and parents. I encourage you to check out the many exciting and engaging activities the festival will have going on for families and all comers.

Of course, one of our ongoing goals is to keep the conversations we have at this conference going all year long. We’ll be continuing our in-depth coverage of workforce issues and the rapidly evolving job market. There is plenty of work to be done if America is to retain its technological edge, but progress is being made, and there are powerful stories to tell. We’re happy to help share them.

WELCOME

Education Begins with AccessGlobally, a strong emphasis on education empowers communities and builds the foundation for human progress.

As an energy company that relies upon technology, we know first-hand the value in having a workforce that is proficient in STEM. This focus on STEM matters for ExxonMobil, the country and the world. In 2018, we are concentrating on programs that demonstrate real improvements in educational outcomes and emphasize STEM programming.

The ExxonMobil Foundation is committed to supporting programs and policies that improve students’ college and career readiness, STEM proficiency, and access to quality teaching and learning across the nation. Our partners include the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI), whose work is setting a new course for students who have been historically left behind, especially in the high demand and fast-paced STEM world. NSMI delivers measurable and inspiring results, developing a pipeline of teachers whose students will one day solve the toughest challenges of our day. We are also proud to support the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program (ANSEP). Based in Anchorage, ANSEP students are learning to lead in in science and engineering through middle school academies, summer bridge programs and college prep courses.
