Expecting to see his car speed past me, I was surprised to see him driving slowly beside me as I walked. We both stopped. My instinct insisted that I run, but I knew that would only provoke him. He switched off his car and opened the door. I desperately wanted to run, but my legs wouldn’t move. I stood still, watching my potential killer smirk at me as he walked closer.

The tires gripped to the tar as his car fl ew around the corner.

SCREECH!Now, run now!I bolted off , adrenaline surging through my veins. Suddenly, I ran into something. Sprawled on the ground, I looked up to see what I hit. A man, wearing a familiar smirk. The man from the car brought a friend.

I collapsed to the ground as soon as he hit me. I kept facing the ground. The pain was so intense. Every pulse made my head ache more. My blood splattered on the fl oor with large red dots. I fi nally glanced up at him, my blood now stroking the side of my face. His smirk grew into a smile that changed to laughter.

He stood over me, his laughter growing louder. Everything around me turned to a blur.

THWACK!

I searched the darkness for someone to help me. I staggered to my feet, but kept tripping in panic. Both men laughed manically.

THWACK!

Page 28: Diana Portfolio 2016 - Final Print

My right eye was swollen and glued shut with dried blood. I was in a small room, with a barred window. I tried to stand up to look outside, but was yanked back. My left arm was chained to a pipe.

I shot my attention in the direction of the noise.

S H R I E K !It sounded like a woman… crying. Then there was silence, an eerie silence. Moments later, both men stormed into the room, holding a limp woman. They tossed her next to me. She was bloodied and bruised. One man crouched in front of me and wiped away my tear with his bloody hand. He smiled and then left me with the body. I looked at her. Seeing her like this made me wonder if I would meet the same fate.

S H R I E K !

With exhaustion dancing on my eyelid, teasing me to sleep. I knew I wouldn’t fi nd rest here.

The wooden fl oors alerted me of every step they took outside. I need to get out of here. I refuse to be their toy. To let them decide my fate. I looked at the woman beside me. She probably has a family looking for her, hoping she returns home alive. Slowly, without panic, she opened her eyes. She didn’t move or speak, she just met my stare.

I could see their shadow by the door. I stretched for her hand. I changed my mind… We need to get out of here.

CREAK!CREAK!

Page 29: Diana Portfolio 2016 - Final Print

Copyright Diana Rorke 2016C

She was so helpless, lying naked on the fi lthy fl oor. Squeezing my hand so hard, her eyes widened as soon as we heard the door bang open. We both knew what that meant. She squeezed harder. “Time to play.” He said in a fl at, mocking tone. After unchaining me, they dragged us both into a larger room. They looked at the woman with disgust, as if she was useless to them now. They then looked at one another and smiled.

His foot slammed into the side of her head. I scurried to stop him, but was met with a knee to my torso.

A warm, bitter liquid spilled from my mouth. I wasn’t sure if it was because of the blow to my stomach or seeing the blood ooze from her face.

CRUNCH!CRUNCH!

My fear of them transformed into rage. They left her body on a table. There was so much blood that it covered the surface of it.

It then turned into a thin stream of blood pouring off the table. While both men chuckled, I noticed a large hammer not too far from me. Keeping my eyes on them, I inched slowly towards it. Gripping its cold, wooden handle gave me energy and eff ortlessly brought me to my feet. Oblivious, just how I want them. With all my rage, I swung hard. He collapsed on the table.

Watching him twitch, invoked my own sick laughter.

DRIP. DRIP. DRIP.

DRIP. DRIP. DRIP.

Page 30: Diana Portfolio 2016 - Final Print

Copyright Diana Rorke 2016C

I felt nothing as I watched him violently twitch in his friend’s arms. Their pain was my opportunity to escape. I ran out the room. After some time, I found a way out. It was locked.

I thrust myself against the door.

I heard him scream, shouting for me. I was running out of time. I took several steps away from the door. I heard him again, he was closer. I ran for the door with all the strength I could salvage.

The door splintered apart as I ran through it. The wind whistled as I ran, music to my ears.

DOOF, DOOF!DOOF, DOOF!

DOOF!I clung to a tree as I desperately tried to catch my breath. I had to keep moving, I could still hear his faint cries. He’s searching for me.

Searching the darkness was folly.

The howls echoed from the trees. For a split second, I considered running back, but the thought of running back to him sent chills down my spine. I’m never going back. I sprinted off again into the darkness.

The howling boomed from all directions. At any minute, I could meet the carnivorous creatures. That thought excited me.

HOWL!HOW L! H O W L!
