SEWER SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTSDELRIDGE BASIN
Project overview
Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is currently constructing a sewer improvement project in your neighborhood. CSO 2, located at the intersection of Delridge Way SW and SW Orchard Street, is one of two Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) facilities in the Delridge neighborhood undergoing retrofits to reduce overflows of untreated stormwater and sewage into Longfellow Creek.
CSO 2 holds excess untreated stormwater and sewage during heavy rainstorms, releasing it once there is capacity in the downstream system to carry it away. The current tank design is inefficient and prone to clogging that can result in more frequent overflows of untreated stormwater and sewage into Longfellow Creek.
What does the project include?
Improvements to CSO 2 includes:
• Installation of an actively-controlled system, including gates, pumps and sensors to better monitor and control the amount of flow that is allowed to enter the downstream sewer system.
• Installation of a new ventilation fan over the large storage tank to improve air quality and safety for SPU maintenance crews.
In addition to improvements to the CSO 2 facility, SPU is installing 450 feet of new pipe, an underground diversion structure, pedestrian and landscaping improvements on the north side of SW Orchard Street, three new curb ramps at SW Orchard Street and Dumar Way SW, and a new roadside flow monitoring box at the intersection of 24th Avenue SW and SW Myrtle Street.

Delridge Basin Sewer System ImprovementsDelridge Basin Sewer System Improvements
• Construction began in early 2015. Crews are on-schedule for substantial completion in fall 2015.
• Most construction activity is occurring on SPU property, but upgrades to the flow monitoring system, including a new above-ground equipment cabinet, will take place in the right-of-way at 24th Avenue SW and SW Myrtle Street. Crews are also installing a new diversion structure on SW Orchard Street near Dumar Way SW, which will include construction of a new curb and gutter. This work will result in a narrower street after construction is complete.
• Work hours are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. - 5 p.m., and Saturdays, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Crews may occasionally need to work extended hours. We will notify neighbors ahead of any needed schedule changes.
• During construction, traffic will be periodically reduced to one lane on SW Orchard Street near Delridge Way SW. Parking on SW Orchard Street will be eliminated, but will return in a reduced capacity after construction is completed.
