“Wa t a ay jut a tun 2010?”
As my tenure as Chairman o the Boardwinds down, and I ponder what to write ormy last article or the newsletter. I want tothank all o the Board and Chamber Sta andvolunteers who have made this year anothersuccessul year or the Chamber. Already, theChair Elect, Ryan Gregory, has begun to planor his year as Chair ollowing the ratifcation
o our new 5-Year Vision as one o my lastpieces o business to conduct or the Chamberthis December.
Since my original article on SC21earlier this year, I have ound it interesting
to learn how many o our members and thecommunity at large, do not really understandwhat SC21 and NapaLearns is all about.Even leaders who have children in our Napaschool system have argued with me that it’sonly about putting computers in schools. Ithas been an uphill battle to educate them andhelp them understand that the new technology
is NOT about putting computers in schools, but is a new methodology o teaching thatbrings ALL students in the classroom togetherto learn problem-solving skills that were not
sufciently taught to everyone using oldermethods.
I encourage all o you to take a tour o the newly renovated New Tech High in Napaor a tour o the new American Canyon HighSchool, and see or yoursel what this teachinmethodology is about beore dismissing it as just “putting computers in schools”. You’llbe amazed at how the tour will open yourunderstanding, which includes students tellinyou how it has changed their lives.
As a person who experienced an earlyversion o this type o learning, I attributemuch o my success in business, and in lie,to it. So much so that I have lead a campaignto allow any contributions made to SC21/ NapaLearns through the Chamber Foundatioto be tax deductible and to make it easy oryou to give to this cause.

Mr. Gregory took the group through theexisting Chamber organizational chart and anexamination o current volunteer committeeoutput.
The committees o the Chamber covera variety o areas rom inrastructure andtransportation to business support and skillbuilding and even legislative action. These
committees are an excellent entree to theNapa business arena, oer a tremendousservice to the community and in and o
themselves present a high-ocus networkingopportunity to committee members. Theactivities o each committee were evaluated
and assessed or current impact and value, withamendments and augmentations suggestedand adopted. O particular ocus were theBusiness Builders Committee, which organizesand presents pertinent business skill-buildingeducational workshops in partnership with theSmall Business Development Center and theCandidate Endorsement Committee, whichscreens political candidates running or localand state level ofces.
The dynamic group o thirty-plus Napa
leaders that comprises the Napa ChamberBoard came together with creative suggestionsand a can-do approach to address 2011 goalso a creating a better inormed working bodyand a more pro-active member outreach eortthat can achieve new membership growth andexisting member retention alike. The answerto the question “What do we do?” when theChamber does so much or so many businessesis not an easy one to answer in 30 secondsor less. Marketing consultant Holly Krassnerled a brainstorming session to begin thedevelopment o just such an “elevator speech”which would communicate and encapsulate theessence o Chamber purpose and place in the
community. As an organization that advocatesor the entire business community, the centralpurpose and eect o the Chamber is one o
