3 Main Objectives• Save the Dead Sea from environmental
degradation• Desalinate water and generate hydro
electricity for Israel, Jordan, and the Palestinian Authority
• Serve as a symbol of peace in the Middle East
Consequences:
• Red algal blooms and gypsum deposits in the Dead Sea
• Soil and ground water contamination due to pipeline leakages
• Massive pumping out of the Gulf of Aqaba could harm vulnerable ecosystems
• Estimated cost is over 10 billion U.S. dollars
