CANAL WINCHESTER
Formerly called Winchester, Canal Winchester was founded in 1802 by Henry Dove. The Ohio Canal played a large part in the village’s history. Construction of the canal began in 1827, and the first bridge across the canal, built on wooded abutments, was located on High Street. In 1840, stone abutments were added, and a covered bridge with double driveways was erected. The first newspaper, Winchester Times, was established in 1871.
