“One thing that will almost always get someone to click through is food, because it’s a universal thing we can all relate to: eating. You
provide a link, which then provides a description, photos, and essentially, when to see more. It was right on target for how to
showcase an up-and-coming project.”

“There aren’t many ways to highlight an anatomy class as
being something exciting. Unless, of course, it’s through
a cadaver dissection. The tweet alone may have been
glazed over had it not been for the photo that accompanied it.
Not because dissection isn’t interesting, but regardless of the context, followers always

news outlet would in the case of this emergency. Great coverage and great information for not only the community to follow, but anyone
who was looking for up-to-the-minute coverage on the tragedy.”

News editor
Liana Bayne,
Enterprise Team leader
THIRD PLACE
The purpose of this letter is to recommend Zach Crizer, the editor--‐in--‐chief of the Collegiate Times, the independent student newspaper at Virginia Tech, for the Best Student Media Leader Apple Award. On Dec. 8, 2011, Tragedy struck Tech a second time in the form of gunshots, as Ross Truett Ashley allegedly shot and killed police officer Deriek Crouse, as well as himself. In the wake of disaster, Crizer stepped up to the plate. Crizer happened to be in the newspaper’s office that Friday afternoon for a meeting with Lindsey Brookbank, the managing editor. While they chatted, they suddenly heard frantic talking via the police scanner — phrases such as “police officer down near Cassell Coliseum” and “shooter on the loose” seemed to boom through the office on what was previously an ordinary, quiet day.
