Dear Parents and Care Givers

The BFG, Goldilocks, a paper aeroplane, a Boy in a Dress, Dorothy and Toto, numer-ous Cats in Hats and Wallies were amongst the incredible characters that descended upon Darlington Primary School for the Book Character Parade. The costumes were amazing and I congratulate everyone, parents, students and staff, for the thought, effort and ingenuity they devoted to preparations for the event. It was a terrific suc-cess and a very entertaining way to spend the morning at school. Thank you to Jane Bigelow and the P & C for co-ordinating this event. (See photos later in the news-letter) We certainly made the most of Book Week, with both the Book Fair and the Super Duper educational musical. These activities were definitely appreciated by the stu-dents and I thank families for their support. The musical featured six of the Children’s Book Council shortlisted titles for 2017 and was centred round the theme of Escape to Everywhere. Some staff members reported that it was among the best school perfor-mances they had ever seen. The Book Fair was extremely well supported with sales totalling $5 386.99 which earned the school $1429 in Ashtons Scholastics free points. Families took up the op-portunity to purchase many beautiful books and, as a result, the school will be able to choose books and resources to supplement our programs. It was great to see chil-dren so excited about reading.

Special thanks to Mrs Diaz, Library Officer, for organising both of these events. Not every school has the opportunity to celebrate the 80th Birthday of one of its staff members. The Darlington Primary School community was in that fortunate position last week, when a special morning tea was held to mark the 80th birthday of one of their school gardeners, Phil Jackson. Belying his years, Phil is a sprightly, energetic figure around the school, raking weeding, leaf-blowing, planting, fertilising and generally tending the beautiful, largely natural environment of the school grounds. Born in Iowa (USA) on the 29th August 1937, Phil has been a part-time gardener at the school since April 2009. His daughter-in-law, Relita, is a cleaner at the school and his two grandchildren also spent their primary school years at Darlington Primary. His son Craig, who shares Phil’s birthday, has, unlike his father, already retired! Phil has no secrets about how to live long and stay so healthy, other than that he doesn’t stress about anything. Genetics may play a part, as his mother only passed away 18 months ago, having reached the age of 99. He appears to be well on track to follow in her footsteps. Later last week, Phil flew back to Iowa State to attend a school reunion. Of his 85 class mates, around 37 of them will be present at the celebration. 1937 was obviously a good vintage! Darlington primary School feels proud and privileged to have its own Octogenarian staff member!

“The Loop: Drop Off/Pick Up”

Could all parents using the loop pick up area on Amherst Ave, or driving through to the ELC Car Park, please remember to keep the road clear in front of the exit to the loop and the reception car park. This allows people who haven’t collected their children to have another go around the loop and cars/after school care buses to exit the car park Please remember there is a 1 minute stopping time in the loop to keep traffic moving, if you are at the front of the loop and your children aren’t there please be considerate, turn right and do another loop around. Use your indicators to let other parents know you need to do another loop. If you are driving to the ELC car park please do not try to skip the queue by overtaking the traffic waiting to go into the loop, cars turning into the loop may not be expecting you to be there and will turn in front of you causing an accident.

Let anyone else who may be picking up your children from the loop know about leaving the gap to keep traffic moving.

Here’s a quick diagram of how the traffic flow should work, thanks Lu Oliver.

NAIDOC Week Activity In the midst of Book Week activities, Marissa Verma from BindiBindi Dreaming conducted Cultural Language Workshops for Senior, Junior and K/PP classes. This was re-scheduled from NAI-DOC Week last term. The workshops enlightened the students to aspects of language and culture of the Wadjak Noongar people, who are the traditional owners of the land in and around Darling-ton. Thanks to the P & C for organising and supporting this important opportunity for our students.

NAPLAN Results The results of the National Assessments in Literacy and Numeracy, which students in Years 3 and 5 participated in during May, have now been released. Individual reports and explanation sheets were sent home in sealed envelopes yesterday. Please check with your child, or their class teacher, if you have not yet received them. After school yesterday, teachers spent 1 ½ hours analysing school class and individual results. Unfortunately, the school’s perfor-mance this year followed the downward trend of the last couple of years and, whilst above the Australian All Schools Average, did not match that of ‘like schools’ across the nation. This is cause for con-cern and considerable effort is being devoted to identifying causes for this decline and developing plans to remedy it. Faction Athletics For the second half of this week, we will be engaging in one of the major events on the school calendar – the Faction Athletics Carni-val. The students have been practising hard throughout the term and beautiful sunny weather is forecast, so all looks promising for a great day. Thanks to the P & C who have provided funds to purchase new faction coloured shade structures to protect our students. As well as being very practical, they will add to the gala atmosphere on the day. Remember that tomorrow is the last day for ordering of Bento Box lunches from the Canteen. I look forward to catching up with parents on Friday and to making the acquaintance of others whom I have not met yet. Lorna Woodley Principal

Once again, our school Book Fair was a great success. Commission received will be used to purchase items for the library and resources for the school. Thank you to the families and friends who donated books to the library.

A huge to the families of Darlington

Primary School for your continuing support.

In French this semester, the Year 5 and 6 students have been learning about the major landmarks in Paris. Combining this knowledge with French words for directions. The year 4 and some year 5 students have been working on French words for clothing and connecting this with their knowledge of colours to correctly use adjectives in French.

Faction Sports Carnival 2017 FRIDAY 8th of September

On sports carnival day, we will not have any access to the kitchen due to the building works going on.

From a canteen perspective, we are making "bento" boxes for children, teachers and parents. These boxes will be made in the school canteen and delivered to the faction tents on the day.

No other items will be available for purchase. Please pack your morning tea and water bottle.

The Pines Coffee Shop will be open for parents to access (not for children) This year lunches are being served in “Bento” style boxes with a choice of three main items, all canteen made, optional juice box and a variety of nibbly snacks. The snack will include canteen cake, crackers and a variety of fresh fruit and veggie sticks which may vary a little from the photos. Lunches for Kindy/Pre-primary will be delivered to the oval be-tween 11.30 and 12.00 and years 1 - 6 will be delivered between 12.30 - 1.00 to the faction bays. Spectators and teachers lunches will be delivered at this time too. If your child has an allergy, please contact me on 0425 807 166 to arrange an allergy friendly lunch.

PLEASE NOTE: All orders must be placed on flexischools by 9am on the 6th of September to allow time for food preparation.

Thank you for supporting your canteen. Ros.

Nature Trail - Winter Weed

and Tidy Up

10 - 12, Sunday 10 September

Come and see how all the new natives are going

in the Nature Trail, next to the amphitheatre.

This is not a full working bee, but an opportunity

to visit the Nature Trail and reduce the Winter

weeds. We have found the Nature Trail a great

zone for all families, including those with young-

er children.

It won't be catered, but feel welcome to bring

morning tea to share and catch-up with other

school families.
