Page 1: Crochet Duck

This little duck is worked in

double crochet (US single crochet)

throughout. The big duck was

made with double knitting weight

yarn and a 3.5mm / size F hook

and is about 7cm / 3" from chest to

tail – do ducks have chests? The

duckling was crocheted with 4ply

yarn and a 2.5mm / size E hook

and measures only 5cm / 2".

It is important to work to a tight tension so that the stuffing doesn’t

show through the finished duck, so choose your hook and yarn

accordingly.

Before You Begin

All rounds are started with a single chain. This does not count as a

stitch. Rounds are finished with a slip stitch into the first double

crochet of the round to join.

Decreases, which will appear as ‘dec’ in the pattern, are worked

over two stitches as follows:

1) hook through first dc, yoh and pull through (2 loops on hook)

2) hook through second dc, yoh and pull through (3 loops on hook)

3) yoh and pull through all 3 loops

The Body

This is worked in the round.

Ch 4 and join with a slip stitch into a ring.

R 1: Ch 1, 6 dc into ring, sl st to join.

R 2: Ch 1, 2 dc into every dc, sl st to join (12 sts).

R 3: Ch 1, (dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc) all round, sl st to

join (18 sts).

R 4: Ch 1, (dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc) all round, sl st to

join (24 sts).

R 5: Ch 1, (dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc) all round, sl st to

join (30 sts).

R 6-9: Ch 1, dc in every dc, sl st to join.

If you have not done so already, use the beginning tail to close the

hole in the centre.

R 10: Ch 1, (dc in next 3 dc, dec) all round, sl st to join (24 sts).

R 11: Ch 1, (dc in next 2 dc, dec) all round, sl st to join (18 sts).

R 12-14: Ch 1, dc in every dc, sl st to join.

R 15: Ch 1, dec three times, dc in every dc to end, sl st to join

(15 sts).

Now stuff the duck firmly.

The last few rounds will be a bit fiddly as

you try to avoid crocheting through the

stuffing.

R 16: Ch 1, dc in every dc, sl st to join.

R 17: Ch 1, dec, dc in every dc to end, sl st to join (14 sts).

Add a bit more stuffing and you’re ready to work the tail.

The Tail

The tail is worked in rows through both sides of the round at the

same time, thus closing the gap. To make a dc like this, put the

hook through the next dc and the one behind it, yoh and pull

through both sts, then yoh and pull through the remaining two

loops as normal.

Row 1: Ch 1, work 5 dc across both sides of the round, sl st into

the last two sts to join.

This is what it should look like after Row

1, with the tail end of the duck closed.

Now turn and work the rest of the tail in

normal rows.

Row 2: Ch 1, dc into next 4 dc, sl st into last dc.

Row 3: Ch 1, dec twice and fasten off.

Page 4: Crochet Duck

By running the end along both sides of the tail and into the body

you can pull the tail up so that it sticks up in a jaunty fashion …

… like this.

The Head

Begin at the top of the head and work in rounds in the same way as

for the body.

R 1: Ch 1, 6 dc into ring, sl st to join.

R 2: Ch 1, 2 dc into every dc, sl st to join (12 sts).

R 3: Ch 1, (dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc) all round, sl st to

join (18 sts).

R 4-6: Ch 1, dc into every dc, sl st to join.

Use the beginning tail to close the hole in the centre.

R 7: Ch 1, (dc into next dc, dec) all round, sl st to join (12 sts).

R 8: Ch 1, dc into every dc, sl st to join and fasten off.

Stuff the head firmly and sew it to

the rest of the duck, a little way in from

the front of the body.

The Wings (make 2)

Chain 6.

Row 1: Beginning with the 2nd chain from the hook, work 5 dc

into the starting chain.

Row 2: Ch 1, dc into every dc.

Row 3: Ch 1, dec, dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in last dc.

Row 4: Ch 1, 2dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc, dec.

Fasten off. The starting chain is the top edge of the wing and the

cast off end is at the bottom of the front edge.

Sew the wings to the body along the top and front edge. You may

find that one wing curls up and the other doesn’t. You can make

them match by running yarn through the back edge of the wing to

gather it slightly.

He’s starting to look a bit more duck-like.

The Beak

Chain 2.

Row 1: 2 dc in the 2nd chain from the hook.

Row 2: Ch 1, dc in each dc.

Row 3: Ch 1, dec and fasten off.

Page 6: Crochet Duck

Run the two ends through opposite sides to the middle to tidy the

beak up a bit. Now sew it to the duck’s head through the middle.

Embroider the eyes with a few tiny stitches and your duck is

finished.
