TheDemocratsliketotapintoAmerica’ssensitivity,playthemoralitycard,andtalkabouthowhealthcareisauniversalright.Theysaythat“notinthiscountry”willachildgowithouthealthcare,“notinthiscountry”willparentsgobankruptpayingfortheirchild’scancer‐treatment,orwillAmericansdiebecausetheycouldnotaffordsurgery.Democratssaythatwiththeirlegislation,thosethingswillnothappeninAmerica.ButthesimplerealityisthatAmericadoesnotwantwhattheDemocratshavetooffer.Notinthiscountrywill1/7thoftheeconomybedestroyedsimplybecauseanambitiouspresidentandaliberalCongresswanttopassanincomplete

anddevastatingbillassoonaspossible—beforetheirapprovalratingsplummet.NotinthiscountrywillthedeficitincreasebythebillonsbecauseawastefulCongressandpresidentareignoranttothecostoftheirbill.Thisbillisnotdeficitneutral,Mr.President.JustaskthenonpartisanCongressionalBudgetOffice,whichhasfoundthatDemocraticplansinboththeHouseandSenatewouldaddhundredsofbillionsofdollarstothefederaldeficitoverthecomingdecade.America’sfuturecannotaffordthatpricetag.Notinthiscountrywillabortionsbefundedby

AccordingtotheLewinGroup,ifHR3200passes,1/3ofallAmericanswillbeenrolledinthegovernment‐runplan.

6federaltaxpayerdollars.ThebroadHousebillwithits“publicoption”wouldcoverallabortions,andwouldalsopermitfederalsubsidiestobeusedtopurchaseprivateinsurance–thatcoversallabortions.Notinthiscountrywillthebackdoortosocialized,universalhealthcarebeopened.Obamasaidhisplanwon’t“requireyouoryouremployertochangethecoverageorthedoctoryouhave.”Butthatignorestheinducementfactorforemployerstoswitchcoverageformillions.ThefactofthematteristhatmillionsofAmericanswillbeforcedoutoftheirprivateinsurance.Notinthiscountrywillwelosethebesthealthcaresystemintheworld.TheUnitedStatesranks#1inresponsiveness,accordingtotheWorldHealthOrganization.ItisnosecretthatcitizensofothercountriesturntotheUnitedStatesinhealth

careemergencies,becausewecanprovidethemwiththebest,mostefficienttreatment.UndertheMassachusettsuniversalhealthcarepolicy,thestatesawnotonlyatollingeconomiccostbutalsoa

riseindifficultyofgettingthecaretheyneed.Americacannotaffordthisburden.Notinthiscountrywillapatientpoolbeincreasedwithoutenoughdoctorstocareforthem.TheAmericanAssociationofMedicalCollegesestimatesthattheUnitedStatesiscurrentlyexperiencingashortageof15,000doctors.Whowillcareforthesenewlyinsuredpatients?WithallthemoneyCongressisspendinginthesebills,

whydon’tanyofthemtalkaboutexpandingfederalaidtoMedicalstudents?Ifwearegoingtoexpandhealthcarecoverageforall,wemustalsoincreasetheamountofhealthcareprovidersintheindustry.Notinthiscountrywillhealthcarereformbe

passedwithouttortreform.Defensivemedicineandoutrageouslawsuitsarethesourceofwastefulcostsbehindhealthcareinthiscountry.Sure,tortreformwillnothealeverywoundinabrokensystem.ButitwillrelievetheAmericanpeopleofbillionsofdollarsofwaste.Notinthiscountrywillahealthcarebillbepassedthatallowsfraudtocontinuetoconsumeourgovernmentinstitutions.Expertssaythatfraudaccountsforupto10percentormoreofhealthcarecosts.Thefive‐or‐sobillscurrentlyintheHouseandSenatewouldallocateabout$100millionayeartocombatfraud,wasteandabuse.But$100millionistheamountofhealthcarefraudoccurringinthiscountryevery12hours—WhatanicegesturebyCongress.Notinthiscountrywillthespiritofcompetitionbestifled.TruechoiceandtruecompetitioninhealthcarewillonlyexistwhenafamilyinNewYorkcanbuythebestpossiblehealthinsurancethatsatisfiesalloftheirneedswhetherthatcompanyislocatedinNewYork,NewJerseyorNewMexico.Therewillbenotruecompetitioninanyhealthcarebillifthefreemarketcontinuestobedefinedbystatelines.NotinthiscountrywillHR3200besignedintolaw.Notinthiscountry.

ThissummerIwasfortunateenoughtohaveafront‐rowseatforapoliticalmiracle‐in‐themakinginmyhomestateofNewJersey.I’mtalking,ofcourse,abouttheimminentdefeatofourtax‐raising,government‐growing,law‐bendingliberalDemocratGovernor,JonCorzine.Themanresponsibleforthislong‐overduecomeuppanceisRepublicanChrisChristie.HavingworkedinNewJerseypoliticsforthebetterpartofthepastsevenyears,IcanhonestlysaythatMr.Christieisthestrongest,smartestandscrappiestcandidateIhaveevercomeacross.RepublicansinNewJerseyandaroundthecountrywouldbewisetoemulatehimas

theyplottogetbackintopower.ThoughIknewofChristie’sreputationasatough‐as‐nailsU.S.Attorneywhosuccessfullyprosecutedcorruptpoliticians,homegrownterroristsandruthlessmobsters,Ihadneveractuallymethimuntilthissummer.IfirstcaughtupwithhimatacampaignstopattheForkedRiverDinerinForkedRiver,NewJersey.Eightyorsolocalresidentscrowdedintothesmall1950sstyleroadsidedinertohearthecandidatespeak.Theycrammedintobooths,fouroneachside.Theystoodshoulder‐to‐shoulderbehindthecounters.TheydidthissotheycouldlistentothemanwhohasgivenRepublicanstheirbestchancetowinbackthegovernorshipsincetheylostitin2001.ChristietellsafunnystoryabouthowheaccidentallyspilledaglassofwateronRepublicanCongressmanJimSaxtoninthatdinerashewastryingtosecurehisendorsementasPresidentBush’snomineeforU.S.Attorney.Apparently,SaxtonwasimpressedenoughtooverlooktheincidentashegavehimhisendorsementandChristiewentontowinSenateConfirmation.Christie,whois46yearsold,doesnotcomeoffasyourtypicalRepublicanpolitician.Thisispartofhisappealandhischarisma.Heisabigguy,builtlikearoomdivider.Hedoesn’tequivocateorspeakwithmeaninglessplatitudes.Heisadirect,no‐nonsensekindofguywhosayswhathebelievesregardlessofwhetheritispopularorwhetherhewilltakeflackforit.“Peopleinthisstatehurtingreallybad.”saidChristie.“Idon’tcareifattheendoffouryears,I’msopoliticallyradioactivethatIcan’trunforre‐election,I’lldowhatIthinkneedstobedone.”Heisalsorightontheissues.NewJersey’s

confiscatorytaxratesareamongthehighestinthenation.Thishasliterallyforcedfamiliesandbusinessesoutofthestate.OureconomyissobadthatsomehavesuggestedthestateappealtoWashingtonforabailouttofixitsfinances.SincehesucceededdisgracedDemocratGovernorJimMcGreevey,Corzinehas

dramaticallyincreasedthesizeandscopeofgovernment.Theresulthasbeenacripplingeffectonsmallbusinessesandentrepreneurs.Big

governmentisalmostalwaysabreedinggroundforcorruption.WewereremindedofthislastmonthasdozensofNewJerseypoliticiansandcommunityleaderswerearrestedinafederalcorruptionprobe.NewJersey’seconomyiscryingoutfortaxreliefandChrisChristiehasheardthecall.Hehasproposedarealisticplantocuttaxesonfamiliesandbusinesses.Hesaysthiswillleadtoabalancedbudget.Coupledwithhiscommitmenttoreducingthesizeofgovernmentandmitigatingwaste,fraudandabuse,Christiehasaplatformthatwillthrillconservativesand,attheveryleast,gettheattentionofmoderatesandliberals.Sofar,Christiehasbeenrunningthekindof

intelligentandaggressivestrategythathasbeensorelylackingfrompreviousRepublicancampaigns.Theyarecampaigningheavilyintheconservativesoutheasternandnorthwesterncountiesinthestate–whichtheyneedtoturnoutbigonElection

Day.TheyarealsoreachingouttotraditionallyDemocraticprecinctsinthesouthwesternandcentralpartsofthestate.HenamedMonmouthCountySheriffKimGuadango,animpressivewomaninherownright,ashisrunningmateforlieutenantgovernor.Thestrategyappearstobeworking:ChristiehasbeatenCorzineineverysingleopinionpolltakensinceFebruary.HehasmaintainedhisleadastheCorzinecampaign,financedbyhisownpersonalfortune,haslaunchedafactuallyinaccuratenegativeadblitzagainsthim.Hehasanumberofhighprofilesupporterswhoarehelpinghimraiseahealthyamountofmoneytowagehiscampaigninthenextthreemonths.HehasappearedoncablenewsshowsalongsideformerNewYorkCityRudyGiuliani,whoisoneofhismostardentsupporters.

ChristieevengotformerMassachusettsGovernorMittRomneytoheadlinehisofficialcampaignkick‐offatthePNCBankArtsCenterinHolmdel,NJlastmonth.AballroomfullofStateLegislatorsandlocalPartyleadersapplaudedwildlyasMittandChrisserveduppoliticalredmeatforthecrowd.“I’mconvincedthechallengesfacingNewJerseyandtherestofthecountrycanbeovercomewithcourageousleadership.ChrisChristieisastrongconservativevoiceforbalancedbudgets,lowtaxesandmorejobs.Hewillbringbadly‐neededchangetostategovernment.”Romneysaidinhisendorsement.Icouldn’thavesaiditbettermyself.

FollowingRepresentativeJoeWilson’s(R‐SC)outburstlastmonth,IcannothelpbutwonderifthereisaglimpseofhopefortheRepublicanParty.Wehavelostourway.Inthislongandcorruptpoliticalgame,wehaveforgottenwhatwearefightingfor.HaveRepublicanelitesforgottenthatweareconservativesbeforeRepublicans?DidweforgetthePeople–WethePeople?Democratscertainlyhave.Forthemostpart,theyhaveconstantlytriedtopasspseudo‐philanthropicbillsinthenameofthePeople.Butinreality,thesepoliticiansaremakingpoliticalgainswhilethePeoplearestillsuffering.Thesebillsarecoveredinasweet,cake‐likecoveringfilledwithpromises,hopes,andutopia.ButthesebillsdonotprovidefortheAmericanpeople.Trueconservativeshavenotforgottenwhatourcountrywasfoundedon.WehavenotneglectedourbelovedConstitutionandBillofRights,orourfoundingfathers’warningsofadamageddemocracyifgreedandpoliticalgoalswerefavoredoverthePeople.Americawasfoundedontheideaof

Rep.JoeWilsonwillbeoncampusonOctober6thforourCongressionalDinnerSeriesPanel.

9creatingapoliticalsystemthattrulysupportedthepeople,whichcouldnotbeinvadedbypersonalandpettycareergoals.Conservatives,RepublicansandIndependentgroupsalikearestandinguptotheinjusticeuponourfoundation,andtheliberaltakeoverthiscountry’scorevalues–whichnoothercountrypossesses.Letusnotloseourgreatness.Letusnotloseourfreedom.Wehavebeenacountrythathasgiveneachcitizen–nomatterwhatrace,religionorculture–anequalchanceforopportunity.Wedonotacceptputtingaspecificpeopleaboveorbelowanother.ButPresidentObamaisfavoringaspecificpeople;Heisplacingtheweak,thepoor,andthesickonpedestals,notbecausehehastrueintentionsofhelpingthem,butbecauseheseesapoliticaladvantageinthem.Theycanbeusedashispawnstoadvancehispoliticalagenda.WhatIhavebeensayingmaysoundlikeaconspiracytheory,butcouldonedisagreethatourpoliticiansdonotusescaretacticsandsalestechniquestowinovervotesandgainpartisanship?CouldonedisagreethatpropagandaisdeadinAmerica?Andwearenottakingit.Republicans,Libertarians,Constitutionalists,Moderates,Independents,andevensomeDemocratsareseeingthecorruptionintheObamaAdministration.ItsaysalotabouttheRepublicanpartythatourleaders,Congressmen,RepresentativesandSenatorsspeakingoutagainsttheverybillsthatcouldchangeourdemocracyforever.Thisisevidenceofaconservativerevivalwithintheparty.Manyleadersarehavinga“conservativeawakening,”suchasRepresentativeJoeWilson.Hisoutburstof“Youlie!”duringObama’sprimetimespeechwasjustified.AnditwasnotaRepublicancut‐throattactic,asDemocratstrytosay.ThePresidentsaidthatillegalimmigrantswouldnotbereceivingashareofhishealthcarereform,buttheCongressionalResearchServiceshowsthatthehealthcarereformbillswould,infact,includeillegalaliens.IfRepublicanssitback,theirinterestswillneverbeheard.WecannotlettheDemocratsthinkthatRepublicanshavegivenup.Wilsonwasnotwrongforstandingupagainstthepresident’sradicalandgovernment‐runhealthcareproposals.Sincethestartofhispresidentialcampaign,Obamahascontinuouslyliedforhisownpoliticaladvantage.Theword“lie”maybepoliticallyincorrect,butWilson’soutburstissomethingmanyAmericanscanrelateto.

IwouldimaginebeingaRepublicanatGWisn’tmuchdifferentfrombeingaRepublicanonanycollegecampusinAmerica:sortoflikebeingWinstonSmith,themaincharacterinGeorgeOrwell’s1984.We’retheoddmen(orwomen,sotheDemocratsdon’tgetallfussyaboutpoliticalcorrectness)out.Itseemsasthougheveryone,fromourpeerstoourprofessors,isbrainwashed.Thoseofuswhoarestillholdingoutarefewandfarbetweenand,justlikewhenWinstonmeetsO’Brien,wearerelievedtofindmorelikeus,thoughthey’reusuallyinhiding.Luckily,wedon’tliveinsuchanOrwelliansociety(evenifsometimes,aswhenMetrofarecardsfeaturea

pictureofObamaformonthsfollowinghisinauguration,itmayseemthatway).We’refortunatetobelivingand

learningatthemostpoliticallyactiveuniversityinthenation.Thisallowsforsubstantivedebate(wonbyRepublicans,ofcourse)onmanyissues,rangingfromabortiontonationalsecurityto,mostrecently,thehealthcaredebacle.Iwouldn’texpecttohearlatenightdebatesaboutthepublicoptionorhowHillaryClintonisdoingasSecretaryofStateatmanyotheruniversities.Here,it’saregularthing,anditmakesmebothproudtobeastudenthereandthrilledthatImadetherightchoicetostudyhere.That’snottosaythatpoliticaldiscourseatGWisalwayscivil.Onenightlastyear,myroommateandIwerestayingintodosomework

onaFridaywhenabelligerentlydrunkresidentofourbuildingburstintoourroomandstartedtopunchpostersofAnnCoulterandSarahPalinwhilescreamingabouthow,becausewehadtheseposters,wemusthategaypeople.I’vebeentoldthatIhatewomen,minorities,thepoor,andequality,allbecauseI’veespousedmypoliticalbeliefsinwhatIexpectedwouldberationaldiscoursewithotherstudents.MyMcCain‐Palinshirt,whichIworeproudlylastyearleadinguptoDoomsday…er,theelection,wasmetonmorethanoneoccasionwithlooksofdisgustandtauntsfromclassyliberals.I’vereceivedatleastonepapergradethatseemedtometobebasedonthepoliticalviewsIexpressedintheassignmentratherthanonthequalityofmywritingorthestrengthsofmyarguments.AndI’mnottheonlyonewhothishashappenedto.Lastyear,ontheanniversaryofRoev.Wade,commemoratedbyconservativesoncampuswithcrossesrepresentingabortedchildrenplacedinUniversityYard,membersoftheCollegeDemocrats’executiveboarddefacedsomeofthosecrosses,resultinginanoutcryfromconservativesandRepublicansatGW.Theseinstances,inwhichliberalstreatanyonewhodisagreeswiththemwithutterdisrespectandcontempt,makeseveralthingsclear.Republicansoncampusneedtostandupand

beunafraidtorevealtheirpoliticalleanings.BeingaRepublicanisnothingtobeashamedof!Weshouldbeproudofourpoliticalbeliefs,especiallythoseofusintelligentenoughtobeconservatives!Wemustremainfirminourbeliefs.Inthisway,we’llcontinuetodominateinpoliticaldiscussiononcampus,aswehavesinceI’vebeenatGW,andsurelybefore.Andwemustrememberhowimportantitisnottostooptotheirlevel.TheGWCollegeRepublicansarededicatedtoeachofthesecrucialtenetsoflifeasaRepublicanonacollegecampus.Throughpressreleases,debateswiththeCollegeDemocrats,thehostingofspeakersfromdifferentareasoftheRepublicanParty,passingoutinformationoncampus,andbysimplyremainingcool,calm,andcollected,theCollegeRepublicansworkeverydaytoensurethatwedon’tenduplike1984’sWinstonSmith,whosuccumbstothemajorityandgivesupthefight.Republicans,notjustatGWbutalloverthecountry,needtoworktofightagainsttheblatantandoverwhelmingliberalismoncollegecampuses,andwherebettertostartthanwiththeCollegeRepublicans.

September12,2009willberememberedasthedaythatbeganaresurgenceinthebeliefsofthefoundersoftherepublic,asadaywhentheRepublicanpartyandtheAmericanpeoplestooduptotherapidlyincreasingtyrannyoftheFederalgovernmentandsetthecoursetovictoryin2012andbeyond.TheprotestsacrossthenationshowthatthereiswidespreaddiscontentamongtheAmericanpopulaceandthattheyarenolongerwillingtobea“silentmajority.”TheyhavenowopenlyshownthisbybringingtheirargumentstoWashingtonitself.Thisrally,anditsspirit,needstobeandwillbethebeginningpushtoretakeWashingtonandthestates;thefirststeptovictoryinNewJerseyandVirginia.TheseTeaParties,andespeciallythe9/12rally,havethepotentialtodoforRepublicanswhatObama’scandidacydidfortheDemocrats;rallymassivesupport—potentiallymorethanObamadid.WhatwefacenowisoneofthemostseriousthreatstotherepublicsincetheRevolutionandtheAmericanpeopleknowthat.Theyseetheonethingthattheyhaveoftenreliedonandconsideredtrulytheirownattacked,thisbeingtheirhealthcare,inamannerthatistrulyterrifyingandenraging.EvenifPresidentObamadoesnotintendfortheUnitedStatestohavethesingle‐payersystemofCanada

andmostofWesternEurope,allofwhicharefailingrapidly,hehasgivencontrolofthebilltopeoplewhodo(i.e.NancyPelosiandBarneyFrank).Thegeneralpublicishappywiththe

qualityoftheirhealthcareandtheydonotwanttoseeitsystematicallydestroyed—andnowtheywantthattobeknown.SincetherallywehavealreadyseentherapiddemiseofACORN,anditsdemisehasbecomeamajorbi‐partisaneffort.Wehavealsoseenthecontinueddecreaseinsupportforthepresident’shealthcare
