Whatyou’lllearn:

Companionplanting,birdandinsectretentionThebenefitsofbiodiversityareexploredinthiscreativeandfunday,whereyouwillgainadeeperunderstandingofdifferentplantfamiliesandhowtheyinteract.Therichresourcesprovidedwillgiveyoutheabilitytoquicklyplaneitheragardenorashelterbelttoattractnativebirdsandinsects.Wewillplaywithcroprotationstodemonstratehowsimpleitistoplanacombinedgarden,butalsolookatthesciencethatsupportsgrowingmultiplespeciesforplantandsoilhealth.Thisisabusydaywithalotofinformationsobepreparedtodosomepre-readingandvideowatchingsowecanhitthegroundrunning.

FruittreegraftingInanothergreatadditiontoourpropagationsection,thisisthedaytodemystifygraftingandbudding.Youwilltakehomeyourowngraftedappletreewithhighexpectationsforitssuccess!Topicscoveredincluderootstockandscionselectionandcare,thereasonswegraftandusingthebesttoolsforthejob.Pests&diseasesWhenplantsaresickorbeingattackeditcanbedevastatingforagrower.Duringthesetwodays,wecoverhowtobeasupersleuthtoidentifythecauseoftheproblem,evaluatewhatactionsshouldbetakenandarangeoforganicpestanddiseasemanagementstrategiesareprovided.Youwillbeintroducedtothetheoryoftheeconomicthresholdtotakeactionwhichcansaveyoubothtimeandmoney.DuringthesesessionswewillbeonthehuntforbugstoviewundertheUSBmicroscopes.KazelbringsherexpertisefrombeingaCropMonitortotheclass,withstrategiesforbothcommercialandhomegardensituations.PropagationThisisa“handsinthedirt”course,withatheorysessionfollowedbyputtingitintopractice.Therewillbealotofplantmaterialaftereachclasstoshare,takehomeandstartgrowing.

Wefindthiscourseisbestdeliveredoverfoursessions,oneeachseason.InWinter,wedothe“hardwood”cuttings:grape,plum,fig,hydrangea,blueberry,currantandthelike.InSpring,we’lllookatseedraising:seedsaving,seedraisingmix,germination,andappropriatecontainers.Summer,isthebesttimetocollectandroot“soft"cuttings(sage,salvias,scentedgeraniums)andsome"semi-hardwood"cuttings(lavender,rosemary,Chileanguava).Oncewegetto

Autumn,wearedividingofplantslikerhubarb,comfrey,mint,thymeandberrycanes,withmore"semi-hardwoodcuttings."

Treepropagationwillalsobecovered.You’lllearnaboutgraftingtheoryandgetpracticalexperienceusingagraftingtool;rootstockproductionofappleandquince;howtogrowrootstocksbymoundlayering;andhowpeachesandplumscanbegrownfromseeds.

Pruning-winterWinteristhekeypruningtimefordeciduousfruittrees,butspecificallyforapplesandpears.KazelteachestheFrenchCentralLeaderpruningmethod,whichhasbeenproventogivethebestyieldswhilealsobeingthequickestandeasiestmethodtolearnandpractice.Thiscoursestartswithunderstandingthetheoryofcorrectcutsandorchardhygiene,toolcareandselection,understandingthefundamentalsofwhattocutandwhy,includingmethodsoftyingdownbranchestomaximisefruitproduction.Wecoverthecollectionofbudwoodforgrafting,andusingthegraftingtooltograftontorootstocksortomaketreeswithdifferentfruitoneachbranch.Thenit'souttotheyoungappleorchardtopracticeourtechniquesonrealtrees.Pruning-summerSummerpruningfollowshotontheheelsofthesummerfruitseason,andistypicallythebesttimetopruneplumsandpeacheswhicharesusceptibletowinterdiseases.Wewillreviewthetechniquesandtheoriescoveredinwinterandyouwillhaveanopportunitytoseetheorchardinfullflush,tastesomeoftheheritageapplesyouprunedearlierintheyear,andpracticeyourpruning.Wewillalsolookathowtopruneevergreenfruittreesincludingcitrus,feijoaandavocado.SeedsavingAsanintroductiontoplantpropagationwehaveadayonsavingseeds.You’lllearnandpracticethebasictechniquesforseedextractionandstorage.We’lldelveintothedifferentplantfamilies,howtoidentifyandselectforthebestgenetictraits.Thisisaverypracticalhands-onday,withsomein-depthdiscussionaroundplantbreedingandprotectingheritageplants.

UnderstandingsoilsSoilcomponentsanddynamicscanseemcomplex,howeversoilisacriticalelementtounderstandifyouwanttogrownutritiousfood,successfulplants,vibranttreesandhealthylivestock.Ifyoualsowanttocutdownonbuyingandhaulingsoilamendments,spendinghoursweeding,hoeing,anddigging,thiscomprehensivecoursewillmakeallthedifferenceinhelpingyougetyoursoilsintoahealthy,sustainablecycle.

WeedmanagementHowyoudealwithweedsinyourgardensituationcanbethedifferencebetweenthesuccessandfailureofacrop.Inthisengagingsession,weredefinewhataweedis,andlookforpotentialtoharnessthepoweroftheirwildgrowthtoimproveoursoils.Thiscoursecoversandevaluatesaraftoforganicweedcontroltechniquesincludinginnovativetechnologiesandideasforsuppressingweedgrowth-aimingtoprovidearangeofpracticalandrealsolutions.Sourcesforweedidentificationareprovidedandasystemtoevaluatethepotentialofaweedtoharmyourcrop.CropmanagementDuringthisunitwebringitalltogetherforaholisticoverviewofmanagingproductionontheland.Combiningourdeeperunderstandingofsoils,pestsanddiseases,andpropagationwiththeneedsofourspecificcropthisisthepartwherestudentscanreallystarttofeellikeconfidentgardenersanddemonstratehowtheywoulddealeffectivelywithdifferentscenarios.Thisunitallowsstudentstoconsideraspecificcrop,incombinationwiththeirlandsituationandmakeaspecificplanforpropagation,growing,harvestingandcaringforthecropthroughallofitsstagesofgrowth.
