Principal’s Report Welcome to 2015 and a new school year and one

which followed a very successful 2014. A warm welcome to those new students and families who are joining us for the first time. We also welcome our new members of staff who are joining us on this journey.

The staff at Coonabarabran High pride themselves on providing a breadth of opportunity, encouraging participation and acknowledging achievement at all levels. Achievements across a diverse range of academic, cultural and sporting activities were showcased at our annual awards night. The 2014 HSC outcomes reflected the effort of our teachers and the commitment of our students. Excellent individual results were evident across all key learning areas, with this achievement being acknowledged within the education editorial in the Sydney Morning Herald in December 2014. It highlighted our 'value adding' and how we were 'punching above our weight'. Clayton McKinnon was dux of the year with an ATAR of 97.95 and in addition, achieved the outstanding result of 97% in Legal Studies, placing Clayton 20th in the state. Additionally, our 2014 state-wide Year 8 Science ESSA results have recently been released. Mr Nott, Science Head Teacher has provided an overview of these pleasing examination outcomes within this newsletter.

Year 7 students have made a successful transition to High School and have settled in well. The formal transition program led by Year 7 Advisor Mr Danual Stewart, with support from Assistant Year Advisor Mr Robert Holden and Learning Support Team co-ordinator, Mrs Debbie Redden, facilitated this success. This program continued this year with our senior students providing activities and support at lunch time and via the Year 7 Study Camp which was recently held at the racecourse. The school welcomes Year 7 and Parents to a BBQ on Thursday 26 February at 6.00pm. This will be followed by a school social which will conclude at 9.30pm.

387 students have commenced their studies with a full complement of highly trained teachers and support staff. Student welfare is a prominent priority within our school. I welcome Ms Mary Doolan as relieving Deputy Principal this year, who will work alongside all stakeholders to support the safety and care of students. Ms Doolan will provide an overview of strategies and support programs regarding student welfare at the forthcoming P&C meeting on 23 February. Within this context, I also acknowledge the commitment and effort of the respective Year Advisors and Assistants. Their work is ongoing and the contribution to their cohort's wellbeing is significant. I have been very impressed with the positive start to our school year, however, I encourage any parent or caregiver with concerns to contact the school to enable early intervention and resolution.

Our 2015 School Plan provides a holistic approach to your child's education. Coonabarabran High School strives for excellence in a safe and respectful environment. Our three strategic directions are focussed upon student achievement, providing a culture of learning and recognising the importance of professional development for staff to support quality teaching. Achieving these objectives is a dynamic process; parent input is valued and the P&C is certainly an integral forum in this regard.

The study centre program, under the guidance of Ms Sherelle Moore, will continue each Tuesday and Thursday from 3.45 to 5.00 pm in the school Library. Teachers from a range of faculties are available to support students completing homework, assessment tasks and in preparing for examinations. Our senior students with study periods will continue to occupy the Tom Williams' Wing in the Library. Mr Phil Draper, a retired Highly Accomplished Teacher has returned to provide valuable support, in the senior study, helping students to prepare for their HSC.

On our morning assemblies, the student body has looked most impressive, proudly wearing their school uniform; a positive image reinforced by our new members of staff. We have quality pre-loved uniforms available and where needed, a welfare fund for isolated purchases to assist students in meeting uniform requirements.

Finally, I encourage parents and carers to attend our monthly P&C meetings and to become involved in our school community. I am confident that you will find your association with our wonderful school community a rewarding experience. G Enks, Relieving Principal

P&C President’s Report The first Coonabarabran High School P&C meeting for 2015 is scheduled for Monday 23rd February. We are a small, dedicated bunch and would love to see a few new faces join the committee this year. We meet on the last Monday of each month, in the school library at 5.30pm. The P&C provides the ideal forum to find out what is happening at your school and to provide input into school operations and policies. Our next fund raising activity is to run the gate at the Coonabarabran Show on the 13th and 14th March 2015. It is quite a profitable activity, with most of the organisational work being done by the Show Committee. We will develop a roster of volunteers to cover the 2 days and nights over the next week or so and place it on the school website so that you can nominate the block of time(s) that suit you best. It is quite a social activity as you meet and greet everyone as they enter the show. We look forward to meeting new staff, students, parents and carers over the next 12 months. BURRA BEE DEE PROJECT Twenty five students from Years 7 to 10 attended a

luncheon on Wednesday 10th December at the Shire Hall to celebrate the conclusion of the Burra Bee Dee Project. The project involved students participating in a ten week exercise program attending the Action Specific Health and Fitness Gym two mornings a week. The aim of the program was to improve students‘ attendance at school.

On Wednesday students had the opportunity to give back to the local Aboriginal Community through a luncheon that the students and the local police cooked, prepared and served to the Aboriginal Elders.

A great luncheon was enjoyed by all.

THE KEEPING PLACE On Friday 13th February 2015 the Year 9/10

Aboriginal Studies class visited the “Keeping Place” for a guided tour with Mr Patty Chatfield. “The Keeping Place” is located in the Tourist Information Centre and houses significant ancient artefacts from the region including the Tommy of Bungebah Chest Plate which was repatriated last year.

HSC Success The Coonabarabran High School community was

once again very proud of their 2014 Year 12 students’ HSC success.

From a cohort of 49 students 23 Band 6 (above 90) marks were achieved across a range of subjects. Outstanding results were achieved in Engineering Studies, PDHPE, Legal Studies and Information Process and Technology. Particularly pleasing was the achievement of most subjects of marks which ranked above state average.

Such achievement is a strong testament to the dedication of staff and the hard work of the students across their final years of secondary study.

Whilst, many students have already obtained early entry into their chosen field of tertiary studies, these outstanding results will ensure that students have the best opportunity to gain access to their desired university course or will successfully support them as they transition to employment or training.

It is incredibly satisfying to see hard work rewarded and our best wishes go with these students for their future success.

YOUR TIME STARTS NOW………….Mrs Conn My earliest memory is…. My mum sending me to Kindergarten on a PD Day. The teacher had to call her to have me picked up. I was so upset because I wanted to show my friends my new purple handbag.

My school report usually said…. Well mannered student, but she needs to talk more and participate in class.

My most treasured possession is…anything my children give me.

My mother and father always told me…. I was from planet Zorbon and that I was left on their doorstep.

In the movie of my life, I’d be played by…. Amy Adams.

I wish I had….. a beach house.

I wish I hadn’t…. been so shy in school.

My guiltiest pleasure is… peanut M&M’s.

My most humiliating moment was… crashing down a bowling alley lane because I wasn’t wearing ‘bowling’ shoes.

At home I cook….any recipe that has a picture

My last meal would be…steak, caesar salad, king prawns, lobster, and cheesecake.

My favourite gadget is…my phone.

I’m very bad at……answering questions about myself :o(

When I was a child I wanted to…. Be a spy.

The book that changed my life is……The Power of One.

If I could live anywhere I’d choose… a place where I could downhill ski and go to the beach in the same day.

It’s not fashionable but I love….flannel.

My worst trait is….not being able to tell a joke.

My best trait is….my Canadian accent.

Friends say I am…happy.

If I wasn’t me I’d like to be….an explorer.

It scares me, but I’d love to….skydive.

If I could change one thing in the world it would

be…..cruelty.

My greatest fear is…..failure.

If only I could….stop procrastinating.

The hardest thing I’ve ever done was….leaving my family to move to Australia.

The last big belly laugh I had was….when I was watching GoggleBox.

I relax by…..putting the kids to bed.

What I don’t find amusing is…. Practical jokes.

I’m always being asked…. “Is it true that Canadian’s put maple syrup on everything?”

My worst job was…..working in a call centre.

My favourite place in the world…my home.

Dana Conn is currently teaching in the English Faculty.

unjustified absence on a student's record. Please help us

to maintain accurate records.

Please also note that family holidays are no longer an

acceptable reason for a Certificate of Exemption.

Peer Support Over the next eight weeks students will be involved

in the Peer Support Program. Each week groups of 6 – 8 students will meet with 3 Peer Leaders and work through a range of activities that focus on values. It is hoped that through these sessions, each student will clarify their personal values, respect themselves and others, recognise the importance of integrity and discuss ways of serving their school community.

Values are our personal beliefs guiding our decisions and behaviour. They influence our interactions and relationships with others. Our values define who we are and are reflected in our thoughts, words and actions.

This week students learnt that respect involves showing care and consideration for yourself and others. They discussed the many ways they can show respect. Students were encouraged to realise others feel valued and accepted when they are being respected.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM On Monday 9th February 201,5 the Year 10 Peer

Support Leaders were involved a Youth Leadership Program facilitated by the Catholic Community Services Outreach Drought Assistance Program. This is a two day program. The second day will be held in June.

This program focused on ‘positive education’ which seeks to build on existing levels of emotional health and wellbeing. The goal of this program was as a proactive tool to help students experience positive states of mental health through increased levels of well-being and self-esteem.

Students will be involved in a project with the goal of raising positive awareness of mental heatlh and the availability of mental health services in the community.

Thanks to Catherine, Bow and Angela who conducted the program.

QUICKSMART and MULTILIT The Quicksmart Numeracy and MULTILIT programs

have recommenced this year with eighteen Year 8 students enrolled in the two programs. It is anticipated that the majority of these students will complete the programs during Term 2 enabling Year 7 students to join and receive the benefits of these highly successful intervention programs.

Quicksmart Numeracy is a 30 week program where students are withdrawn and paired with another student 3 times a week for 30 minutes . Quicksmart emphasises the role of automaticity in learning. Students become quick in their response speed and smart in their strategy. The aim is to improve students’ information retrieval times to levels that free working-memory capacity. Ultimately Quicksmart frees up working memory so students can engage meaningfully in more demanding activities like problem solving and multiple computations. Mrs Sue Nortom our trained Quicksmart tutor has been implementing the program since it was introduced into the school in 2011.

MULIT and MULTILIT (Extension) are offered to students who are experiencing reading and comprehension difficulties. This program usually runs for 2 terms and students are withdrawn 1:1, three times a week with our trained MULTILIT tutors Mrs Kelly Heaney and Mr David Macintosh.

Analysis of past NAPLAN results has revealed that students who have participated in these programs have achieved impressive average Scaled Score Growth in the Numeracy and Reading components of NAPLAN compared with State growth.

Below is a photo of our 2014 students celebrating their successful completion of the QuickSmart and MULTILIT programs last year. The student’s success and achievements were acknowledged with the presentation of certificates followed by pizza and cake.

The final 2014 QuickSmart numeracy assessments

revealed pleasing improvements in student numeracy and problem solving skills whilst MULTILIT students growth in reading and vocabulary skills were very impressive with some students improving their reading levels by over three years. Mrs Redden Learning and Support Teacher

Klub Catur

(Chess Club) The Chess Club has kicked off 2015 with a very

pleasing increase in the number of students turning up to play chess during our Monday lunch time club meetings. Many new students from our year 7 cohort have taken the challenge to demonstrate their chess skills honed in their Primary school years. Particularly pleasing is the presence of a number of girls showing up to play a game. The North-West School Chess Competition will shortly be sending this year’s draw. Team selection is underway during our lunch time meetings with a round robin competition. Those results will determine this year’s team and I wish them the best of luck in the coming North-West Competition. Mr Holden

ESSA Results Coonabarabran High School Year 9 students have just received their results for the Essential Secondary Science Assessment (ESSA). The ESSA is conducted as a modern computerised activity where students watch short movie files and listened to sound bites to answer questions regarding their activities throughout the last 2 years of Science. The overall school results reflect very positively, with our students achieving above or within 10% of the state average in the majority of assessment questions. The number of students achieving in the top band was above state average in Science Overall, Knowledge and Understanding and Extended Responses. Our students also gained results within 2 percentage points for Working Scientifically, Communicating Scientifically. I would like to congratulate the students and the 2014 Year 8 teachers for this fine result. Well done. Mr Nott

Calculators Calculators are a valuable resource to support your

child's progress in Mathematics and other subjects. Owning their own calculator helps a student to become familiar and confident with their operation both within the classroom and at home.

Formal examinations and external NAPLAN and Higher School Certificate tests have calculator sections and we strongly encourage all students to have their own calculator.

The CASIO fx-82 AU, which is on the Board of Studies approved calculator list is suitable for all levels of schooling from Year 7 to Higher School Certificate and can be purchased from the front office for $22.00. This is a not-for-profit service provided by the school.

If you have any concerns in regards to this request, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Please encourage your child to have a calculator as soon as possible.

Year 7 Study Skills Day On Tuesday 17

th of February, Year 7 students from

Coonabarabran High School attended a study skills day at the Coonabarabran Race Course. This day is an invaluable experience for beginning high school students to learn more about study skills and methods for academic success, as well as bond as a year group.

Many activities were carried out over the day, with things such as team building, setting goals, techniques for study, and the very popular noodle hockey and ‘rob the nest’ games. It was strongly evident that the students enjoyed their time at the racecourse and gained some good study strategies and skills. Many thanks go to the staff that ran the sessions:

Mrs Redden (Maths), Mrs Nash (Science), Mr Langford (English) Mr Cousins (PDHPE) Mrs Stanton (AEO – peer support) and Kylie Skidmore who ran some team building games. The Year 10 Peer Support leaders who ran the afternoon session are to be congratulated on their maturity and effort in running this valuable session with the Year 7 students. Thank you to Mrs Kenny for preparing the Peer Support Leaders so well. Thanks also go to the Year 7 students for their participation and good behaviour and to Mrs McGlashan and the canteen staff for the fantastic catering on the day. D Stewart

Food & cuisine around IndonesiaFood & cuisine around IndonesiaFood & cuisine around Indonesia Lumpia

Lumpia are pastries of Chinese origin similar to fried spring rolls popular in Southeast Asia. The term lumpia derives from Hokkien lunpia. The recipes, both fried and fresh versions, were brought by Chinese immigrants from the Fujian province of China to Southeast Asia and became popular where they settled in Indonesia and the Philippines.

Lumpia Semarang

Lumpia Semarang is named after Semarang, the capital city of Central Java in Indonesia, where significant numbers of Chinese immigrants settled there centuries ago. Originally made by Chinese immigrants, this lumpia is filled with bamboo shoots, dried shrimp, chicken, and/or prawns. It is served with a sweet chili sauce made from dried shrimp (optional), coconut sugar, red chili peppers, bird's eye chili peppers, ground white pepper, tapioca starch, water, and baby shallots. Lumpia Semarang is served either deep-fried or unfried, as the filling is already cooked.

Recipe Lumpia Semarang:

Ingredients:

15 sheets of spring roll skin

2 tablespoons flour and 1 tablespoon water, diluted to

adhesive

Oil for frying

3 cloves garlic, finely chopped

1 teaspoon roasted dried shrimp, finely chopped

50 grams of shrimp, coarsely chopped

50 grams of chicken, roughly chopped

2 eggs, beaten off

200 grams of canned bamboo shoots, sliced lighters

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 / 2 teaspoon salt

1 / 4 teaspoon pepper

1 / 2 teaspoon sugar

2 tablespoons cooking oil

Lumpia sauce:

1 clove garlic, finely chopped

300 ml water

50 grams of brown sugar, finely combed

1 / 4 teaspoon pepper

25 grams sugar

3 tablespoons corn starch and 1 tablespoon water.

Cooking directions

1. Heat the oil. Fry garlic and dried shrimp until fragrant. Add the shrimp and /or chicken. Stir until the color changes.

2. Set aside on the edge of the pan. Beat in the eggs. Stir until grained. Add the bamboo shoots, fry and stir until wilted.

3. Add Lumpia sauce, salt, pepper and sugar. Cook until contents well mixed.

4. Take a sheet of spring roll skin. Add contents to sheet, a little larger than a common spring roll, fold and roll. Glue with a solution of wheat flour. Fry in oil that has been heated until cooked.

Serve with sweet chilli sauce

WRITING SUCCESS Congratulations to David Tighe who placed third in the

50 Word Fiction Competition conducted by the Australian Association for the Teaching of English (AATE).

The competition celebrated the 50th anniversary of the AATE and entrants were required to write an original short story of exactly 50 words on the theme ‘Golden Stories’. Almost 900 entries were received from across Australia. David, a Year 11 student, placed third in the senior section for students in Years 10-12 anywhere in Australia. His story will be published in a Golden Stories Anthology. David’s story:

Mid Summer. Oppressed shrubs emanated from my grandfather’s house. Sunrays cascaded, the calescent tin shed roof providing the only relief. There my grandfather would weave his golden tales, spinning a web of youth and adventure, of troubles and triumphs.

Enchanting, engrossing stories of a glorious time, surviving only through memories.

Lambing Flat Writing Competition Congratulations to these students who were successful in the short story competitions conducted in conjunction with the Young Cherry Festival.

Girls 14s Softball Gala Day in Narrabri

It was a hot and sweaty day in Narrabri late last year, but that didn’t faze the players of the Coonabarabran Softball team. The girls had psyched themselves up in the bus for three games of softball. The team started the day with a convincing win against Coonamble defeating them 23 to 8. It didn’t take long for the players new to softball to get into the swing of things (apologies for the softball pun). The second game against Narrabri was more closely contended. The girls were down 8 nil after the first inning, spirits were getting low until the team turned it around by making some beautiful outs in the field, including a catch by Kiara and subsequent triple play. The batting that followed was even more impressive. Solid outfield hits by Ashleigh, Molly and Emily and some speedy running from Annabelle got us to an even score. More fantastic pitching from Alé and continued success in the batting box from Mackensie, Libby, Kate and Mollee J kept us in the game. However, it was Narrabri up by 2 runs in the end. The final game against McIntyre highlighted some hidden talents of a few team members: Alison at third base and Angel in the batting box with a solid hit to centre field straight past the pitcher’s head. Another successful day of softball! A big thank you to Bree for helping out and a massive thanks to Mr Ramage, not only did he organise the nets and drive the bus, he umpired three games of softball in the searing heat of Narrabri. Swimming Carnival A very successful swimming carnival was held last

Wednesday 11th February, with school and house spirit being a feature of the day. With all houses being colourfully dressed and cheering enthusiastically, a tremendous atmosphere was created which generated mass participation in the pool itself.

The day started with the best dressed competition. The girls from Mopra dressed as blueberries stole the show from the Tibuc Treats (page 3) adding a bit of fun to what was to turn out to be a very enjoyable day.

The swim throughs proved very popular with masses of students surging down the pool as each house tried to get as many students from one end to the other in a set time

Although no records were broken we witnessed a number of very competent swimmers in action with some great competition throughout the day.

The first 2 in each race qualify for the North West carnival at Armidale on the 2nd of March

The age champions were as follow:

Tibuc was the overall winner on the day making them champions for the 2nd year in a row.

12/13 yrs Elizabeth Varley Joshua Bunting

14 yrs Matildas Chapman Keaton Thompson

15 yrs Kate Masman Jack Isedale

16 yrs Annie Nash Ben Harris

Senior Sara Hinks/Maddie McNeilly Joshua Masman
