• Choose plants carefully before you buy
• Look for insects, insect damage, signs of diseases (viruses, fungus, bacterial rot), snails …
• if there is … DO NOT BUY!

• Quarantine newly acquired plants before mixing them with your collection

• Wash and sterilize all pruning / cutting instruments
• USE soap and running water• Rubbing Alcohol 70%• saturated tri-sodium phosphate
(TSP) solution

• Learn to identify common orchid/plant pests and diseases and how to control them

• Regularly check your plants in the garden or nursery -->
• See to it if they need watering, fertilizing, pest control – and most of all, tender loving care.

• Clean your plants --> remove all dried, yellowing or rotting parts.
• Also remove weeds.• Sanitation is a good way to make
plants healthy.

• spray fungicides during rainy season … especially during monsoon rains ( syam-syam) or before onset of typhoons.
• Common Fungicides used: DITHANE, CAPTAN, FUNGITOX

• when in doubt, do not water• during rainy season, if possible,
add plastic roofing to your nursery• during summer, water plants
properly… make sure all soil are wet … and let excess water drip out … make sure pots have sufficient drainage holes.

• spray insecticide only when necessary - to control insect infestation.
• know the type of insecticides and their target insects – systemic (e.g. LANNATE, SEVIN), contact, stomach poison
• Take NOTE of their color label GREEN, YELLOW, OR RED.

• allow proper lighting. Know which plants are for shade, partial shade and full sun.
