NEW DELHI, July 17:

At least 21 people were killedin rain-related incidents inUttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh,Rajasthan and Assam with mon-soon gaining momentum in severalparts of North and Northeast India.

At least 10 people were killedin Uttarakhand in rain-related inci-dents. Four persons lost their livesin Tehri district as their car was hitby debris falling from a hillside inthe wake of a landslide. Two otherswere killed in Uttarkashi districtwhen a tree fell on their house fol-lowing heavy rains in the area.

Incessant rains sent theGanga, Yamuna and their tribu-taries into spate with all of themincluding the Bhagirathi,Alaknanda and Mandakiniflowing close to the dangermark, prompting authorities toevacuate people living there.

Heavy rains are likely to con-tinue in the State for another 24hours especially in UdhamsinghNagar, Haridwar and Dehradundistricts where extremely heavyrains are expected at a couple ofplaces during the period, StateMeT office said.

The national capital wit-nessed light rains, keeping themercury within comfortablelevels with the maximum tem-perature at 30.1 degrees Celsius,five notches below the normal.

According to the IndiaMeteorological Department, 2.5mm rainfall was recordedbetween 8.30 AM and 5.30 PMat Safdarjung observatory whileweather stations at Lodhi Road,and Ridge recorded 2.6 mm and0.6 mm rainfall respectively.

The minimum temperaturesettled at 26.4 degree Celsius, onenotch below the normal andhumidity level oscillated between81 and 97 per cent in Delhi.

Several parts of UP receivedover 10 cms rainfall, even as theweather department predicted rainand thunder showers at manyplaces in the State tomorrow.

Overnight showers havewreaked havoc in most partsAligarh and Mathura with alarge number of houses gettingwater-logged.

In Bijnor's Nahtor area, twosisters, aged 30 and 32 years,were killed after the roof of theirhouse collapsed on them due toheavy rains.

A minor and a 40-year-oldwoman died in Muzaffarnagarand Mathura respectively due tohouse collapse. A 25-year-oldman died in lightning-strike inBalrampur, while three personswere electrocuted in Aligarh aftercoming in contact with a live wireas they were trying to pump outrain waters from their house.

Widespread rains lashedPunjab and Haryana, causingmercury to dip by a few notches.Many places in Punjab includingPatiala, Ludhiana received rainswhich dropped the temperature byseveral notches, giving relief toresidents from the hot and humidconditions.(PTI)
