The Philosophy and Religious Studies Department along with the Journalism Department are sponsoring the film screening of “Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch’s War on Journalism” with a Q-and-A session with co-producer, Jim Gilliam, following the documentary.

“Outfoxed” explores the issue of media bias regarding social and political matters and its impact on society. Media experts, including Jeff Cohen (Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting), Bob McChesney (Free Press), Chellie Pingree (Common Cause), Jeff Chester (Center for Digital Democracy) and David Brock (Media Matters) provide context in the in–depth look at media mogul Rupert Murdoch and Fox News.

The film also features former Fox News employees, including producers, reporters, bookers and writers who recount the pressures of

imposing a “right–wing” point of view or risk losing their jobs. The screening will be held on September 13, from 3-5 p.m., in

H-131. Gilliam is a former dot-com executive turned activist filmmaker.

In the wake of 9/11, Gilliam left his position as chief technology officer of high-profile startup Business.com and devoted his time to more pressing matters.

Through MoveOn.org, in 2003, he collaborated with veteran filmmaker Robert Greenwald to research and help produce the groundbreaking documentary, “Uncovered: The War on Iraq,” about the faulty intel-ligence that led the U.S. to war.

Bringing together the world of film, politics, and the Internet, “Uncovered” defined a new generation of films — the grassroots political documentary. Gilliam then co-produced Greenwald’s next film, “Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch’s War on Journalism,” an unprecedent-ed look at the propaganda techniques employed by FOX

News. All are welcome to the screening and there is no admission fee.

Rear access to the auditorium will close at 3:05 p.m.

The retirement of Sue (Reichart) Sever, Court Reporting Instructor, was recognized at the August 24 board meeting.

Baseball coach Scott Pickler led the Yarmouth–Dennis (Mass.) Red Sox to the 2004 Cape League Championship. The Red Sox defeated the Falmouth Commodores, 8–4 in 11 innings on August 14 in the Cape Cod Baseball League’s title game.

This is Scott’s first cham-pionship during his seven-year tenure as field manager of the Y–D Red Sox.

The Cape Cod Baseball League is the nation’s oldest, most successful amateur base-ball league. It aims to foster the careers of top prospects in the nation.

Seven former Cypress College women’s soccer play-ers have signed with four-year schools: Renee Haynes, Cal State Dominguez Hills; Katie Roche, Cal State Dominguez Hills; Brooke Johns, University of Hartford (CT,); Cynthia Pinkney, San Jose State (CA); Andrea Serrano, Menlo Park College (CA); Michele Chapman, Ottawa University (KS); and Nataly Clavel, University of LaVerne (CA).

CHARGERS BRIEFLYInformation Table Serves Nearly 2,000 Students to Start SemesterClose to 2,000 students were assisted in the 10

days that the information table was set up to help guide students. Over 700 students approached the Information table in the first two days of the semester.

Due to the huge success of this much–needed service, the information booth will be set up again in January prior to the start of the spring semester.

“I know that the students we helped appreciated the fact that we were there,” said Dr. Lewis. “There’s no telling how many students we ‘saved’ because we were able to provide them with good information or just make them feel welcome.”

The table was run by Jorge Ramirez, dean of Student Support Services, on behalf of the 5% MORE Committee.

After a significant delay, the “Construction Updates” section of the college Web site has been updated with new content and valuable information. The change comes as students are developing a growing interest in the projects.

With that in mind, brief descriptions of the various construction projects have been added to the section’s main page. Links are available to areas with additional information.

The Opening Day construction video “Extreme Makeover: Campus Edition” has been added under the “Galleries” heading on the page, along with four photo slide shows. More photographs will be added as the images are taken and processed for the Web.

Finally, the “Construction Updates” section includes the campus closure maps that have been circulated and posted with the start of school.

Look for new content under the “Construction Updates” icon on a regular basis.

The Budget & Planning Committee has allocated $10,000 for funding requests for conference registration for the 2004-2005 year. This is $5,000 more than last year, which will provide mon-ies for more employees to attend area conferences and workshops, although it is not enough to cover transporta-tion and accommodations for out-of-town or out-of-state conferences. The deadline to submit requests is Monday, September 13, by 4 p.m.

Cypress College Academic Senate meetings are open to all who wish to attend.The meetings are the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM

in the Wilson Conference Room.

Last year, a group of Cypress College faculty members, classified staff, and administrators participated in an on-going dialogue to identify common Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs), or a common scope of requirements, of those students leaving Cypress College with a vocational certificate and/or an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts, Occupational Studies, or General Studies, or students transferring with general education certification. By May 2004, the Academic Senate had approved the ILO document, and the President’s Advisory Cabinet adopted the ILOs. This fall, all members of the college community, including students, are invited to participate in a series of dialogues to identify definitions and processes for establishing and measuring student learning outcomes for individual courses and programs. While the maximum benefit is gained if participants can attend all of the dialogues, it is not mandatory that they do so. Faculty members are strongly encouraged to participate actively in these dialogues. It is imperative that the SLO development process is faculty-driven, and the establishment and measurement of SLOs reflect the academic culture of our college. (Flex credit or ½ equivalent unit credit toward advancement on pay scale for every 10 hours of participation is available.) Facilitating the dialogue will be Dr. Randy Martinez, Psychology Department; Nancy Deutsch, English/Reading Department and Staff Development Coordinator; and Dr. Heather Brown, Director of Institutional Research. All three participated in the ILO dialogue, have attended numerous conferences on student learning, and collectively conducted an extensive review of the literature on the assessment of student learning.

Red Sox Crowned Champions in Thrilling Finale

FALMOUTH – You want drama?

All too often, lopsided games render championships anticlimactic. The result is obvious earlyin the game, and the rest of the contest serves as nothing more than a coronation for the winner.And if that’s what you wanted, you had no place at Guv Fuller Field on Saturday.

But if you wanted timely hits,clutch defense and fearlesspitching, if you wanted passion inthe dugouts and in the stands, ifyou wanted arguably the greatestgame in the history of the CapeCod Baseball League, the 11-inning battle between Yarmouth-Dennis and Falmouth couldn’thave been more magical.

In the end, the Red Soxemerged as champions for the firsttime in Scott Pickler’s tenure asfield manager. They scored fourruns in the top of the 11th inningto win the Cape League’s longestseason-ending game sinceWareham beat Brewster in 13 innings in 1994.

“To win a big game like that, and there were some crazy moments in that game, it feels greatto finally win it,” said third baseman Adam Davis (Florida).

The teams traded a pair of single runs early. Falmouth’s Danny Perales (Southern California)hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first, and Y-D’s Ryan Rohlinger (Oklahoma) scored on abalk in the top of the second. Commodore designated hitter Paul Christian (Brown) hit a solohome run in the bottom of the second, and Red Sox center fielder Ramon Glasgow (CosumnesRiver) doubled home Ben Crabtree (Ohio) in the top of the fourth.

The story early, though, was the heroic effort of Falmouth starter Jensen Lewis (Vanderbilt).Pitching on three days’ rest, Lewis held the Red Sox at bay for 6 1/3 innings, allowing oneearned run while striking out 12.

His biggest jam came in thethird inning, when an error allowedY-D to load the bases with justone out. But Lewis came back withsix straight strikes to the next twohitters and struck his way out of

the inning.

“What a gutty effort by JensenLewis,” Pickler said. “I thought hewas outstanding.”

The Commodores gave Lewisplenty of support in the bottom ofthe fourth. First baseman MarkHamilton (Tulane) and shortstopChris Lewis (Stanford) eachconnected for solo home runs tocenter field, and Falmouth wentahead, 4-2.

That lead held until the top of the ninth.

Davis, Joe Anthonsen (Campbell) and Will Harris (Louisiana State) each drew walks to beginthe inning. Frank Curreri (UMass) took a ball and a strike, fouled off the next pitch, and then hit aseeing-eye ground ball up the middle and through for a game-tying two-run single.

Falmouth went quietly in the bottom of the ninth, and the game went to extra innings with thescore tied at 4.

The Commodores had their best chance to send the series to a third game in the home halfof the 10th inning. Catcher Barry Gunther (Mississippi) hit a one-out double, and Kevin Roberts(Houston) moved him to third with a ground ball to first. The Red Sox opted to intentionally walkJacob Ellsbury (Oregon State) and face Matt Antonelli (Wake Forest), but Antonelli worked a walkof his own to load the bases.

Josh Faiola (Dartmouth) induced a pop fly in the infield, but with two outs, Perales hit asinking line drive to right field with game-winning single written all over it.

Enter Jim Rapaport. The Stanford outfielder sprinted in and dove headlong for the ball, and itfound its way into his glove to end the threat.

The Red Sox finally broke through in the top of the 11th inning. Anthonsen drew his secondwalk of the game, and pinch-hitter P.J. Finigan (Southern Illinois) beat out an infield single togive Yarmouth-Dennis two critical base-runners with no outs.

Curreri, he of the clutch single in his previous at-bat, laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt toadvance Anthonsen and Finegan to third and second, respectively.

The Commodores decided to walk the hot-hitting Rohlinger to load the bases, but the firstpitch from pitcher Kyle Young (Wake Forest) sailed to the backstop and allowed Anthonsen toscore the go-ahead run.

Rohlinger then executed a textbook squeeze to score Finigan and extend the lead to tworuns. And after a single to right by Rapaport, Nick Moresi (Fresno State) stroked a long home runto left field to put the game out of reach at 8-4.

All that remained was for reliever Brett Harker (College of Charleston) – who turned in thethird strong relief outing of the night from the Red Sox bullpen – to close the door on theCommodores.

“Faiola went as long as he could, and then Harker came in, and (Cory) VanAllen was great,”Davis said. “He’s been great all year.”

League officials named Rohlinger, whose eighth-inning home run provided the margin ofvictory on Friday, and Faiola, who earned a win and two saves in the playoffs, co-winners of theplayoffs’ Most Valuable Player award.

“These kids deserve this, as hard as they’ve played all year,” Pickler said. “Finigan comes offthe bench right there and gets a big hit, Faiola closes the door, Rapaport makes a great catch. Itjust goes on and on.”
