We would like to encourage all students to get involved in activities which will help us raise resources or money for people less fortunate than ourselves. All year groups have several Charity Representatives and it is through them that you will learn about charity events that are taking place in the School. That is not to say that you cannot get involved yourself. We are always looking for willing participants, and it may be that there is a charity that has personal significance to you for which you would therefore like to raise money. We are very happy to help you do so! To get involved in charity at KGS talk to Mrs Fine (Geography).

SAILING Sailing continues to be a popular and fast growing sport at KGS. Dinghy sailing is a Wednesday afternoon games option for 5th and 6th Form and a Tuesday afternoon Games option for the 4th form. The dinghy sailing takes place at the Albany Sailing Club on the Thames where students sail a range of boats including Laser Picos, Topper Vibes and Wayfarers. Powerboating also takes place when conditions are unsuitable for sailing. Opportunities for large boat, residential trips also occur throughout the year. Typically a middle school sailing weekend takes place in the Autumn Term with a longer sixth-form trip during the Spring or Summer. A variety of boats are used for these trips ranging from classic pilot cutters to fast, offshore racing yachts. In recent years we have chartered a Tall Ship from the Tall Ships Youth Trust and also taken part in the International Tall Ships Race, sailing from Waterford in Ireland to Scotland. We also took part in the famous Round the Island Race and had a week long cruise to The Channel Islands and St Malo. Further afield, in 2013, fifteen Fifth Form students spent a week sailing in

Turkey on a Sunsail Flotilla holiday and a similar trip is planned for summer 2015. For more information, please see Mr Forsyth. SCIENCE CLUB (JUNIOR) Junior Science Club - First to Third years. Examples of recent events and activities have included: organising a chocolate-tasting event to mark the beginning of Fair-trade Fortnight, organising an accessories swap to cut down on ‘throw away fashion’, and organising new recycling programmes in the school which have also raised money which we have put towards rainforest and species protection abroad. Alongside these activities we have also carried out an environmental review of the school to inform future decision-making processes. TOUCHSTONE At Touchstone, we embark upon a quest to address the ultimate questions about life, the universe and everything. Whether or not we arrive at a final answer is not vital, it is the process of enquiry in which we are interested. If philosophy is exercise for the enquiring mind, then Touchstone will provide you with an intense and enjoyable workout. Everyone has the opportunity to present ideas, debate concepts and have their views challenged. There will always be a member of the Religion and Philosophy department present for support but, at Touchstone, students are in the driving seat. Sixth Form students, Fridays, RP2 1.30pm. For more details see Mrs Hunt or Mr Lawrence. YOUNG ENTERPRISE The Young Enterprise Company Programme offers Lower Sixth Form students the chance to prepare for a working life through the experience of running their own company, supported by advisers from local businesses. Students gain an understanding of how a business works, ranging from the formation of a Board of Directors to the raising of share capital, to the design, manufacture, marketing and sale of a core product (or service). They develop the ability to work as a team and to improve their communication skills. In addition, they gain opportunities to take responsibility and show initiative, as well as enhance their time management skills. Students opting for this activity need to be committed to get the most out of it. Company meetings take place on either Mondays, & Thursdays between 4.15pm and 5.15pm in MA6. See Mr Morris, Mrs Rhys or Mrs Robinson for further details.
