Climatechangeandhybridisationinclownfishes

IncollaborationwiththeVisualEcologyandRiginosLabsweareexcitedtoofferaPhDscholarshiptoexamineclimatechangeimpactsonhybridisationinclownfishesunderthesupervisionofDr.JPHobbs,Prof.CynthiaRiginosandDr.KarenCheney.ThescholarshipisfundedbytheAustralianGovernmentandTheUniversityofQueenslandandprovidesalivingstipendofAUS$28,092perannumtaxfree(2020rate,indexedannually).Thescholarshipisopentobothdomesticandinternationalstudents,andoverseasStudentHealthCover(OSHC)isprovidedforinternationalstudents.Studentswillbeexpectedtostartassoonaspossible.

ProjectdescriptionCoralreefsaretheworld’smostbiodiversemarineecosystem.However,thisbiodiversityisthreatenedbyescalatinghumanimpacts.Theoreticalmodelspredictbiodiversitylossduetoimpactsonevolutionaryprocesses,includinghybridisation,butthisthreatremainsuntestedandunmanaged.Usingclownfishesasamodelgroup,thePhDstudentwillinvestigate:1.whetherclimatechangeincreaseshybridisation;and2,thegeneticconsequencesofhybridisation.ThePhDstudentwillleadaglobalprojectonclownfisheswithaccesstointernationalcollaboratorsandanextensivecollectionofsamples.Therewillbeopportunitiesforthestudenttodeveloptheirownresearchagendaandjoinresearchexpeditions.Thestudentwillworkinaleadingmolecularlaboratoryandjoinamultidisciplinaryteamthatstudiesbehaviour,sensoryneurobiologyandecology.Masters,firstclasshonoursorequivalentwithabackgroundinevolutionarybiologyand/ormolecularecology,especiallypopulationgenomics.Experienceinstatisticsandbioinformatics(e.g.R,Python,bash)ispreferred.Experiencewithfishesormarineorganismsisnotrequired.ThisPhDprojectissupportedbyanARCDECRAFellowshipawardedtoDrJPHobbs.
