Advantages
Introduction
Interlocking concrete pavements behave as a flexible pavement,
their structural design follows flexible bases used for asphalt. Unlike
asphalt, the units resist cracking, spalling and deformation. Loads
are spread to adjacent pavers by shear transfer through the sand in
the joints. The result is a flexible system, moving with minor base and
soil settlement. The unique advantages of concrete pavers over
conventional systems are their resistance to high contact loads,
lateral movement in hot climates and degradation from fuel and
chemicals. As such concrete pavers are extremely suitable for use in
factory areas, container terminals and malls.
Mechanized installation of concrete pavers for new construction of
rehabilitation can also be introduced to decrease installation time
and labor costs. This minimizes traffic disruptions, thereby enabling
faster opening of lanes to traffic, service and emergency vehicles.
Pavement rehabilitation is accelerated through an overlay of sand
over concrete pavers. If existing elevations need to be maintained,
concrete pavers can be laid after asphalt or concrete has been
ground away. As an overlay or lay, pavers can extend the design
life of existing base, asphalt, or concrete.
Fast discharge of surface water runoff is an absolute necessity
for a durable motorway pavement. A good concrete interlocking
pavement is as good as its construction.
