Objectives• Students will be able to show
evidence of their understanding of the English sound system by using the terminology for manner and place of articulation for consonants and vowels.
• SWBT compare English with the TL sound system by using a Venn diagram to show similarities and differences.
What is phonetics?
• Phonetics is the general study of speech sounds.
• The smallest unit of sound is a phoneme.
• There are 40 phonemes in English.
• We use the phonetic alphabet to transcribe the sounds (phonemes) of a word.
Types of phonetics
• Articulatory: how speech sounds are made
• Acoustic: the physical properties of speech as sound waves
• Auditory: the perception of speech sounds through the ears
Talking the talk
• Manner of articulation:– How are these sounds
made?
• Place of articulation:– Where do these sounds
come from?
