BY JIM KINDER, NEWSONG PASTOROver the past four years we have invested $100,000 to sow seeds of the Gospel in Cote d’Ivoire. Today, we are beginning to see the fruits of our labor.
Two years ago we partnered with the International Leadership Institute (ILI) and provided discipleship training to the leaders in the Methodist Church. These leaders implemented their knowledge by training others. As I met with various leaders from Methodist Churches in Cote d’Ivoire, I am introduced as the one who helped bring the (ILI) material to them. They are always thankful for that training. Without fail they share how they are using the discipleship model to expand their ministry.
Last year we built Victory United Methodist Church of Gnangoussou. At the same time, we dug a well to provide fresh water for the village. During my visit this year, I heard testimonies of how their lives are being changed. People are finally free to worship Christ in their village. The children are doing well and are not sick from polluted water. More importantly, more people are becoming Disciples of Christ.
This year we raised funds to purchase a vehicle for Jean Claude Masuka Maleka and his wife Francine to use in their missionary work. The vehicle is titled to the United Methodist Church of Cote d’Ivoire and Jean Claude will use the vehicle while serving in Cote d’Ivoire. Jean Claude and his wife have a three year commitment through the General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM). This vehicle will free both of them to share the ministry that is so desperately needed. We know their seeds will produce fruit! (Pictures located on page 11.)
We cannot forget the fruit we have harvested in Mobile. The Ivorian’s passion for evangelism and discipleship motivate us to turn up the heat at home. We are inspired as we see our sisters and brothers overcome extreme odds to grow the church. These seeds of inspiration produce fruit in us. They call us to trust God with what we bring Him, be it big or small, to make Disciples for Christ, to transform our world.
Finally, it is good to be part of a big family at Christ UMC; where we learn, grow and achieve great things together—locally, regionally and globally.

By Mike Rollins, Director of Youth MinistryDuring the summer, we go on a number of trips as a youth ministry. When I was hired at Christ UMC, I was told that one of these trips was at the core of our Youth ministry. Last summer was the first year I went to SIFAT and we learned “Life is Good.” I asked Addison Genard to tell me why she enjoyed SIFAT and this was her response.
SIFAT, in its most simplistic form, means Servants In Faith And Technology, hence the acronym SIFAT. However, to me and other members of the youth group, it means so much more. While at SIFAT, students are challenged by living through a third-world simulation. Not only are you challenged physically, like trying to keep a fire going or working to support your group, you are challenged mentally. Students become aware of the life styles of our brothers and sisters
around the world. Throughout the week, we learned the same technology SIFAT teaches third-world countries to better there lives. All in all, SIFAT helps put us in the shoes of those around the world. During SIFAT we went deeper into the world and deeper into faith. Having gone for four years, I still find each year as unique and powerful as the years past.

By Sam Taylor Gochey, Associate Children’s MinisterWith summer in full swing, it’s time to head to the beach! There is something relaxing about being in and around water and being outside in God’s creation. From swimming, fishing, or hanging out at the beach, some of the most fun we have involves the water! Water gives us an opportunity to think about the Lord and all of His goodness. Whether it is a stream, a pool, a pond, the rain on a late summer afternoon, or the Gulf of Mexico, water is exactly where it needs to be at exactly the right time—at the same time all at once.
God’s goodness and mercy for us is the same way. He is open and willing to be with us whenever we need Him and wherever we need Him. Psalms 46:4 says, “There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.” Just like this summer, as we get to enjoy the water and the holiness of the outdoors, we are able to enjoy the goodness and love of the Lord, for He is faithful and good and with us wherever we are, whenever we need Him. God brings life and rejuvenation to us at all times, and water is a tangible way that we can see this. May Christ be with you this month, and be sure to enjoy the water!

God is for you. He’s not against you, and he’s not indifferent. He made you and shaped you just the way He wanted you to be. None of your strengths and weaknesses, nothing about your body, none of it is a mistake. He says you are one who is “called by My name, whom I created for My glory, whom I formed and made.” Isaiah 43:7 NIV. He promises that no matter what you’re going through, He’ll never forget you. He’s always present, ready to listen to your cry for help. You can depend on that promise. Whatever challenges you are facing as you seek to reach your health goals, He says, “Don’t be afraid, I’ve redeemed you. I’ve called your name. You’re mine,” Isaiah 43:1 MSG. Consider meditating on these truths so that they sink deep into your soul. Then your heart will be strong and flexible, able to deal with the ups and downs of life. Food for Thought: God formed you, made you, shaped you just the way he wants you to be, and you have the privilege of living out that shape as you continue to walk in Him.

WHERE IS OUR TREASURE?Rob Blackwell, Church AdministratorWith FORWARD, we have talked a good bit about tithing, and about “taking a step up the ladder,” but why should we tithe (or give sacrificially based on what we receive)? Why not just take the practical approach of looking at the expense needs of the church, and asking everyone to pay “their share,” like dues in a club? Those needs are certainly important: it takes money to have services and children’s events in buildings with lights and air conditioning, to take care of the needy, to reach out into the community, etc. But in God’s economy, giving is primarily a matter of the heart. In Mt 6:21, Jesus says “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Sometimes we don’t talk about giving because it makes some people uncomfortable, but Jesus didn’t seem to have this aversion, and talked frequently about money and possessions. I believe He did this because He knew that our hearts tend to go where our time and money are spent, rather than the other way around. He teaches us that, regardless of the amount, when we give enough for it to be a sacrifice, it helps us focus more on God. He doesn’t ask most of us to give up all our possessions; He just asks us to make our relationship with Him the most important part of our lives, and an integral part of that is giving first to Him (as with the Hebrew concept of first fruits) and giving significantly (as with a tithe). With Pastor Jeff’s transition into the part-time role of Pastor Emeritus, and Pastor Rob’s transition into the role of our Senior Pastor, we have a season of change and opportunity ahead of us. As we enter this season, let’s ask God to direct each of us in how we are spending our treasure. As our hearts follow, we may find that the excitement and contentment we experience fuels a season of growth for us, individually and for our church.

WHAT IS A STEPHEN MINISTER?Stephen Ministers are lay people—Christian men and women—trained to provide one-to-one care to people experiencing a difficult time in life, such as grief, divorce, job loss, chronic or terminal illness, relocation, or separation due to military deployment. Stephen Ministers come from all walks of life. Their commonality? A passion for bringing Christ’s love and care to people during a time of need.
Since 1975, more than 600,000 people from more than 11,000 congregations and other organizations have been trained as Stephen Ministers. Would you like to know more about becoming a Stephen Minister at CUMC? If so, please contact Donna Alexander at 251.510.0905. Your call is confidential.
