WELCOME TO CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL
Children are welcome at our services. There are toys in the Quiet Room.
Please feel free to take this publication away with you.
Dear Cathedralites
Harvest Festival for me now is a bit of a buzz. I regret not making more of it in previous churches simply because these days very few folk in cities have gardens and so Harvest Festival doesn't make sense. However my experiences in the Pacific are refocused when I teach on the Harvest Festival because people in the Pacific Islands would auction the little food they did have and distribute the funds. So, after today's service we will be having a grand auction and the funds raised will go to the overseas mission. I’m hoping the Deans pumpkin will fetch a premium bid!
Adding to the fun of today is the baptism of Mayda Viarni Stephanie Patrick whose parents are Frankie and Valorie Patrick. My thanks to the Revd. Trevor Squires (once a curate at this Cathedral) for his assistance.
The excitement does not stop this Sunday. Next Sunday we have a real live donkey as we celebrate Palm Sunday as the beginning of Holy week. It's encouraging to see the number of early registrations for The Children's holiday program which is also happening during Holy week.
Thanks to Sally and Bruce Astridge for the wonderful meal at CAMEO and for the Revd. Elizabeth Clark for her assistance.
At next week's Lenten GROW course on Wednesday at 7.30 pm we will be looking at the controversial factions and groups including Gnosticism which lay behind the New Testament letters; such heresies as the Judaisers, Antinomians, ascetics etc. It will be interesting and fun.
Clergy throughout the Diocese will be gathering at the Cathedral this Thursday at midday for a Chrism service where they will reaffirm their ordination vows. Bishop Elect Steve Maina will be present. This service is open to everybody and this will be followed by a light lunch. We would love to see many of you there in this Diocese event hosted by the Cathedral.
Let's also support the efforts of Christian Broadcasting Association as they try to put Christ into Easter over the commercial radio station throughout NZ.

8.00 am
The Sentence and Collects for the day
Sentence: ‘I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death.’ Philippians 3:10
Collect: Lord of the Passover, you have lit this night with the radiance
of Christ; renew in us our baptism, and bring us through the
Red Sea waters to the promised land.

Deuteronomy 8: 7–18 (8 am) 7 For the LORD your God is bringing
you into a good land, a land with
flowing streams, with springs and
underground waters welling up in
valleys and hills, 8 a land of wheat and
barley, of vines and fig trees and
pomegranates, a land of olive trees
and honey, 9 a land where you may
eat bread without scarcity, where you
will lack nothing, a land whose stones
are iron and from whose hills you may
mine copper. 10 You shall eat your fill
and bless the LORD your God for the
good land that he has given you. 11 Take care that you do not forget
the LORD your God, by failing to keep
his commandments, his ordinances,
and his statutes, which I am
commanding you today. 12 When you
have eaten your fill and have built fine
houses and live in them, 13 and when
your herds and flocks have multiplied,
and your silver and gold is multiplied,
and all that you have is
multiplied, 14 then do not exalt
yourself, forgetting the LORD your
God, who brought you out of the land
of Egypt, out of the house of
slavery, 15 who led you through the
great and terrible wilderness, an arid
waste-land with poisonous snakes
and scorpions. He made water flow for
you from flint rock, 16 and fed you in
the wilderness with manna that your
ancestors did not know, to humble you
and to test you, and in the end to do
you good. 17 Do not say to
yourself, ‘My power and the might of
my own hand have gained
me this wealth.’ 18 But remember
the LORD your God, for it is he who
gives you power to get wealth, so that
he may confirm his covenant that he
swore to your ancestors, as he is
doing today.
2 Corinthians 9: 6–15 (8am)
6 The point is this: the one who sows
sparingly will also reap sparingly, and
the one who sows bountifully will also
reap bountifully. 7 Each of you must
give as you have made up your mind,
not reluctantly or under compulsion,
for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And
God is able to provide you with every
blessing in abundance, so that by
always having enough of everything,
you may share abundantly in every
good work. 9 As it is written, ‘He
scatters abroad, he gives to the
poor; his righteousness endures for
ever.’ 10 He who supplies seed to the
sower and bread for food will supply
and multiply your seed for sowing and
increase the harvest of your
righteousness. 11 You will be enriched
in every way for your great generosity,
which will produce thanksgiving to
God through us; 12 for the rendering of
this ministry not only supplies the
needs of the saints
but also overflows with many
thanksgivings to God. 13 Through the
testing of this ministry you glorify God
by your obedience to the confession
5
of the gospel of Christ and by the
generosity of your sharing with them
and with all others, 14 while they long
for you and pray for you because of
the surpassing grace of God that he
has given you. 15 Thanks be to God for
his indescribable gift!
Luke 12:16-21 (8 am)
16 Then he told them a parable: ‘The
land of a rich man produced
abundantly. 17 And he thought to
himself, “What should I do, for I have
no place to store my crops?” 18 Then
he said, “I will do this: I will pull down
my barns and build larger ones, and
there I will store all my grain and my
goods. 19 And I will say to my soul,
Soul, you have ample goods laid up
for many years; relax, eat, drink, be
merry.” 20 But God said to him, “You
fool! This very night your life is being
demanded of you. And the things you
have prepared, whose will they
be?” 21 So it is with those who store up
treasures for themselves but are not
rich towards God.’
Genesis 1:11-13 (10 am)
11 Then God said, ‘Let the earth put
forth vegetation: plants yielding seed,
and fruit trees of every kind on earth
that bear fruit with the seed in it.’ And
it was so. 12 The earth brought forth
vegetation: plants yielding seed of
every kind, and trees of every kind
bearing fruit with the seed in it. And
God saw that it was good. 13 And there
was evening and there was morning,
the third day.
Matthew 13:1-9 (10 am)
1 That same day Jesus went out of the
house and sat beside the lake. 2 Such
great crowds gathered around him
that he got into a boat and sat there,
while the whole crowd stood on the
beach. 3 And he told them many things
in parables, saying: ‘Listen! A sower
went out to sow. 4 And as he sowed,
some seeds fell on the path, and the
birds came and ate them up. 5 Other
seeds fell on rocky ground, where
they did not have much soil, and they
sprang up quickly, since they had no
depth of soil. 6 But when the sun rose,
they were scorched; and since they
had no root, they withered
away. 7 Other seeds fell among
thorns, and the thorns grew up and
choked them. 8 Other seeds fell on
good soil and brought forth grain,
some a hundredfold, some sixty,
some thirty. 9 Let anyone with ears listen!’
Psalm 151:1-8 Exodus 12:3-14 (5.30 pm)
3 Tell the whole congregation of Israel
that on the tenth of this month they are
to take a lamb for each family, a lamb
for each household. 4 If a household is
too small for a whole lamb, it shall join
its closest neighbour in obtaining one;
the lamb shall be divided in proportion
to the number of people who eat of
it. 5 Your lamb shall be without
blemish, a year-old male; you may
take it from the sheep or from the
goats. 6 You shall keep it until the
fourteenth day of this month; then the
whole assembled congregation of
Israel shall slaughter it at
twilight. 7 They shall take some of the
blood and put it on the two doorposts
and the lintel of the houses in which
they eat it. 8 They shall eat the lamb
that same night; they shall eat it
roasted over the fire with unleavened
bread and bitter herbs. 9 Do not eat
any of it raw or boiled in water, but
roasted over the fire, with its head,
legs, and inner organs. 10 You shall let
none of it remain until the morning;
anything that remains until the
morning you shall burn. 11 This is how
you shall eat it: your loins girded, your
sandals on your feet, and your staff in
your hand; and you shall eat it
hurriedly. It is the passover of
the LORD. 12 For I will pass through the
land of Egypt that night, and I will
strike down every firstborn in the land
of Egypt, both human beings and
animals; on all the gods of Egypt I will
execute judgements: I am
the LORD. 13 The blood shall be a sign
for you on the houses where you live:
when I see the blood, I will pass over
you, and no plague shall destroy you
when I strike the land of Egypt. 14 This
day shall be a day of remembrance for
you. You shall celebrate it as a festival
to the LORD; throughout your
generations you shall observe it as a
perpetual ordinance.
1. I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills: From whence cometh my help.
2. My help cometh even from the Lord: Who hath made heaven and earth.
3. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: And He that keepeth thee will not sleep.
4. Behold He that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.
5. The Lord Himself is thy keeper: The Lord is thy defence upon thy right hand.
6. So that the sun shall not burn thee by day: Neither the moon by night.
7. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: Yea, it is even He that shall keep thy
soul.
8. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in: From this time forth
forever more.

Luke 22:1-13 (5.30 pm) 1 Now the festival of Unleavened
Bread, which is called the Passover,
was near. 2 The chief priests and the
scribes were looking for a way to put
Jesus to death, for they were afraid of
the people. 3 Then Satan entered into
Judas called Iscariot, who was one of
the twelve; 4 he went away and con-
ferred with the chief priests and offic-
ers of the temple police about how he
might betray him to them. 5 They were
greatly pleased and agreed to give
him money. 6 So he consented and
began to look for an opportunity to
betray him to them when no crowd
was present. 7 Then came the day of
Unleavened Bread, on which the
Passover lamb had to be
sacrificed. 8 So Jesus sent Peter and
John, saying, ‘Go and prepare the
Passover meal for us that we may eat
it.’ 9 They asked him, ‘Where do you
want us to make preparations for
it?’ 10 ‘Listen,’ he said to them, ‘when
you have entered the city, a man
enters 11 and say to the owner of the
house, “The teacher asks you, ‘Where
is the guest room, where I may eat the
Passover with my disciples?’” 12 He
will show you a large room upstairs,
already furnished. Make preparations
for us there.’ 13 So they went and
found everything as he had told them;
and they prepared the Passover meal.

BAPTISM & CONFIRMATION COURSE
The consecration of our new bishop will take place on 31 August. One of his first diary dates is for 22 September here at Christ Church Cathedral where we will hold a confirmation service. It therefore makes sense to run the course from mid July up to that date.
I’d like to apologise for twice postponing the course, but I was only signed off as fully fit to work from 1 April and with Easter and my forthcoming visit to the UK it will be very difficult for the team of leaders to coordinate. I’m sure that you appreciate that, while I’ve been sneaking in part time in recent weeks, it has been against medical advice.

URGENT: SACRISTANS NEEDED
One of our two remaining Sacristans has recently undergone surgery and will require
extended convalescence. We are looking for a replacement or ideally several people to
share this important task. It requires up to an hour of time for two people on a Saturday to
change the seasonal colours, dress the Altar and set out the Communion elements. Once
a week the Purificators will need washing and ironing plus any other linen requiring a
change. This is not by any means an onerous job but can be very gratifying.
Training will be given.

a time of silence, stillness and reflection. Come and join our small, friendly community of
Christian meditators. It is suitable for everyone, and easy to learn.

CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL PARISH
The Cathedral Council comprises the Bishop and the Dean: two clerical canons and two lay canons, the two
wardens and the Synod Reps and five Lay Council members elected by the Cathedral congregation at the
Parish AGM from those Lay persons contained on the Parish Roll. It is a Council of Governance and doesn’t get
involved in the day to day management of the Cathedral – except in an oversight capacity. The role is
delegated to four or five management committees that are fully representative of the Cathedral.
At the moment the Council comprises: Bishop (TBA), Very Reverend Mike Hawke, Clerical Canons:
Rev Dr Graham O’Brien and Rev David Moynan, Lay Canons: Russell Smith, Jocelyn Smith, Wardens: Graham
Allan (Dean’s Warden) and Jenny Dickie (People’s Warden), Synod Reps: Graham Allan, Cecil Hood, Cathedral
Reps: Janet Smith, Nicky Calder, David Wallace, Geoff Lawes, Chris Fitchett. This AGM must elect five
representatives. The People’s warden is also an annual nomination.
