Considered to be one of the most famous stars of early hollywood. He is an icon of the silent film era.
Known as the MAN WITH THE TOOTHBRUSH MOUSTACHE, BOWLER HAT, BAMBOO CANE
AND FUNNY WALK.
TALENTED FAMILY
His parents were both performers but separated so that the father can perform in New York. This
background gave him his talents in acting.
DISCOVERY
His mom was a singer but had problems when it came to her stage performances so when an
unexpected tragedy happened the manager spotted Charlie and made him sing at 5 years old he was
discovered.
RISE TO FAMEThe Eight Lancashire Lads
Chaplin began his official career at 8 with The Eight Lancashire Lads, at 18 he began touring with Fred Karno and joined the US tour. He traveled west to
California and signed with Keystone Studios’ popular comedy director Mack Sennett who saw Chaplin
perform on New York.

While at Keystone, he starred at a Little Tramp. November 1914, he left Keystone and joined Essanay where he made 15 more films. Then made 12 more in
Mutual, and on June 1917, Chaplin signed with First National Studios then later on made his own studio
naming it Chaplin Studios.
PROPAGANDA?
Chaplin’s life and career was full of scandal and controversy. The first big scandal was during World
War I where his loyalty to England was questioned. He had never applied for US citizenship and his visitor
claims where also being questioned. Many called him a coward and many thought that he was injecting
communist propaganda in his films.
Limelight 1952
Chaplin had territorial and communist moralities that were being questioned which made the US block him despite no evident claim that he is a threat. He then
stayed in London for the premier of Limelight.
A King in New York 1957A Countess from Hong Kong 1967
He settled in Switzerland and made 2 films ‘A King in New York’ which was showed in US 20 years later and ‘A Countess from Hong Kong’ which was a box office
failure.
CHAPLIN FAMILY
Chaplin was married 4 times and had a total of 11 children. Chaplin was a quiet man and had an un-millionaire way of living despite his millions in the
bank.
Charlie Chaplin was considered one of the greatest filmmakers in the history of American cinema. His
movies continue to gain notoriety as time progresses.
