General and Physical Features:
Location
The existing Kokrajhar district has been curved out of the erstwhile Goalpara district of
Assam. The Headquarter of the district is Kokrajhar and is located at a distance of 250 K.M.
from the state capital Dispur. The District is exactly in between longitude 89.46 easts and 90.38
east and latitude 26.19 north and 26.54 north. The topography of the District is generally plain
covered particularly in the southern area with patches of forests like Kachugaon, Bishmuri,
Guma. Almost 55% of total area of the district falls under Reserve Forests.
Boundaries
Kokrajhar District is bounded both international border i.e. Bhutan in the north, inter-
state border i.e. West Bengal in the West, Bongaigaon district in the east & Dhubri district in the
South.
Historical background of the district
Assam starts with its northwestern boundary with the District of Kokrajhar. The present
Kokrajhar District is one of the three Civil Sub-Divisions of erstwhile Goalpara district,
established in 1876 during British regime. In 1879 the District head quarter was shifted from
Goalpara to Dhubri. In the year 1983 Goalpara district was divided into three separate districts
and Kokrajhar is one of those. Since then Kokrajhar Town is the Headquarter of Kokrajhar
district. The Area of Bongaigaon sub-division of this district has been declared as a separate
district in 1990.
However the historic accord has been signed between Central Govt. State Govt. and the
BLT and as a result the Bodoland territorial council has been established on 10/2/03 with it’s
headquartered at Kokrajhar and a new subdivision viz. Kazigaon. The BTC is now functioning
properly. As a result of BTC formation, entire Sidli Block and 1 Town Committee (Basugaon
Town Committee) and 1 erstwhile GP jurisdiction viz. Fulguri of Kokrajhar Block are transferred
to Chirang District. Also 3 erstwhile GP jurisdiction viz. Kamandanga, Dindinga and Tamarhat
and Sapatgram town Committee under Gossaigaon Block are transferred to Dhubri district due
to transfer of non-BTAD area. On the other hand the BTAD area of Dhubri district is included
under Kokrajhar district. Hence, due to BTC formation the district has undergone a major
administrative & geographical change.
Topography
The climate is very damp and humid due to heavy rainfall and high temperature. It is
having 84% average relative humidity, 30% average highest temperature and around 2243.62
MM average annual rainfall in the last four years. The northern part of the district is undulating
and was tilled recently covered by dense tropical forests. The southern region is mostly a large
alluvial plain intensively cultivated with paddy. It is crossed by several rivers, all tributaries
flowing down to the Brahmaputra from the Bhutanese Himalayas.
Livelihood
Agriculture is the main livelihood for majority of the people of the district. As per 1991
census reports, 80% of the total work force has taken agro-based activities as means of
livelihood. The principal crops are autumn paddy, winter paddy, Mustard, Rapeseeds, Wheat
and Jute. Other than agriculture, a small portion of work force is engaged in live- stock,
forestry, fishery etc., while a very small number is engaged in brickfields & sand gravel
industry.
Industrial Infrastructure
Kokrajhar district is considered to be the most industrially backward district of Assam.
The Agricultural as well as natural resource is not satisfactorily exploited for industrial purpose.
However, the district could attain an appreciable grade qualitatively in the sphere of Handicraft,
such as Terracotta, Pith Crafts, Cane & Bamboo Crafts, Weaving, Jute Crafts etc. With the
backwardness in literacy and in absence of rich-industrial infrastructure the general socio-
economic condition of the district is very poor.
Major Rivers
There are numbers of tributaries of the mighty Brahmaputra viz. Champaboti, Gaurang,
Tipkai, Sonkosh etc. All those rivers flow all the year round. There are major Beels like Diplai
beel, Dheer beel & Sareshwar Beel in the southern part of the district very much adjacent to
Dhubri district border.
Agriculture
Agriculture is the main occupation of the people. Out of the total 3,16,922 Hectares of
land 1,20,588 Hectares of land are brought under cultivation. The common crops in the District
are paddies, Jute, wheat, vegetables etc. Irrigation is mainly through L.I.S., F.I.S. shallow tube
wells and community Irrigation project. But these entire Irrigation scheme are not in a position
to cover the whole area under cultivation.
Demography
Major Communities like Bodo, Rava, Rajbongshi, Bengali Hindu, Muslim, Adivashi, Tea-
Tribes and Others constitutes the community pattern of the district.
