Cell Structure & Function

Cells and HeredityChapter 1.2 (pgs 23-31)

Page 2: Cell Structure & Function

Inside the Cell

• Humans are made up of several bodily systems (Respiratory, Nervous, Digestive) that utilize organs– Cells have similar

structures, called organelles.

Page 3: Cell Structure & Function

Entering a Cell

• Animal cells have only a Cell Membrane, which allows materials in & out of the cell.

Page 4: Cell Structure & Function

Entering a Cell

• Cells are held together with a Cell Wall– Found only in plant cells– Rigid layer made of cellulose

Page 5: Cell Structure & Function

The Nucleus

• The “brain” of the cell– Controls all aspects of the

cell’s activity• Has a Nuclear Membrane– Protects the Nucleus just like

the Cell Membrane.

Page 6: Cell Structure & Function

Into the Cytoplasm

• The area inside the cell is called the Cytoplasm, which is constantly churning– Contains many organelles.

Page 7: Cell Structure & Function

The structure that allows materials In & Out of an animal cell is called…

1 •Cell Wall

2 •Cell Membrane

3 •Nuclear Membrane

Page 8: Cell Structure & Function

Mitochondria produce the energy a cell needs

Vacuoles are storage areas in the cell

Lysosomes break down food and parts

Oodles of Organelles

Page 9: Cell Structure & Function

The ER

• The Endoplasmic Reticulum is the passageway that materials travel along

• Ribosomes on the ER are protein factories, to build & repair cells

• Golgi Bodies package and ship materials to other parts of the cell.
